"The Aiken, SC Pickledillys, along with the City's Park, Recreation and Tourism
employees, hosted the 2nd annual Palmetto Invitational Indoor Pickleball Tournament on
August 16th and 17th. The event was held at the Odell Weeks Activity Center and played
on eight courts, with 138 players participating from 11 states and Scotland. The
tournament was played in both age level and skill level format. The Pickledillys were
happy to see many familiar faces from the 2013 tournament and to welcome new players
this year, as well.
The event was kicked off at the Friday night social which was held in the Municipal
Building in downtown Aiken. The City's PRT generously donated 15 Pro-Lite paddles,
which had a popular Aiken scene, the "canopy of live oaks on South Boundary Avenue",
on the face. The paddles were given to lucky winners whose names were drawn
throughout the weekend.
A special thank you to everyone who participated in the tournament, making it so
successful. The City's PRT has asked Pickleball Specialties to come back for the third
year in a row to run our tournament in August 2015. We invite you to mark it on your
calendars and plan to participate in this indoor tournament in the heat of August here in
Aiken, SC!"
My husband Eddie and I recently had the pleasure of competing at the "Palmetto Indoor
Doubles Invitational." It was a great tournament with 136 players attending and was
very smoothly run by Cindy and Nancy of Pickleball Specialties.
I didn't have a partner for women's doubles and sent in my registration asking to be
paired up with someone else needing a partner. I'm not sure how I got so lucky, but was
paired with a terrific lady from Mobile, Alabama, where she and her husband are USAPA
Ambassadors. We played in the 3.5 skill level winning a gold in the 60's age group and a
bronze in the 50's age group. Virginia Corker and I meshed beautifully and placed no
stress or pressure on each other and just played our game. Not only did we come away
with medals, but even better, friendship.
After the tournament, Virginia and her husband, Jerry were heading to Waynesville, NC
to play more pickleball and visit with friends. Since my husband Eddie and I are
spending some summer time in Franklin, NC we traveled to Waynesville to again play
with our new friends. You can't beat Franklin and Waynesville for great play and great
people!
Virginia, her husband and friend Ken Taylor, who also plays in Waynesville, traveled to
Franklin and spent a beautiful morning on the outdoor courts playing with our group and
then joined several of us for lunch before driving back to Waynesville.
The game of Pickleball has been a wonderful experience for my husband and
me......we enjoy meeting the Pickleball players who are a great group of people.
Carrie Palmer
This is a great testimonial 
On Thu Aug 28 Rick Laskey returned after almost a year to the
Bobby Andrews Recreation Center in Washington, NC at the
request of Frank Rhem, the coordinator of the pickleball program
there. They first had a question and answer session with about
15 players regarding rules, techniques, and strategies. Then they
took to the courts and Rick demonstrated warm-up drills, serving
techniques, dinks, lobs, etc. After that he coached the players as
they played doubles.
Congrats, Rick! It may be 15 right now but watch out before you
know it you’ll be adding a zero after the 5 ;)
The Blue Ridge Mountains Pickleball group did the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS in
honor of their friend and Pickleball player Jim Bost who passed away August 24
from A.L.S. (Lou Gehrigs Disease). Jim played Pickleball with us as long as he was
able, then came to watch, call lines and join us for lunch. He will be missed. The
family requested memorial donations go to the ALS Association or the WNC
Hospice House Foundation, a local organization raising funds to build a Hospice
House in Franklin, NC. We had over 25 participants including guests of the group
who came for the event and donated as well. The group raised over $850.00!
We now extend the Ice Bucket Challenge for A.L.S. to ALL of the Atlantic South
Regional Pickleball Groups.....get it organized in your group, have some fun and
do some good at the same time! We do suggest you do it quickly before the winter
arrives....that ice bucket of water is COLD! Let’s see what we can raise!
What an amazing story… Thanks so much for sharing! Ok Atlantic South
Region we have been tasked to take on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge,
WHO’S NEXT  I’m thinking this would be a great idea for all of the
participants at National’s.
The Senior Games at Francis Marion University in Florence, SC were a
great success with lots of good competition. Fun was had by all!
In Summer and Winter we always have lots of vacationers here so I
have taught many guests the game and I know many have taken it back
home.
Pawleys Island, SC is between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, SC.
Myrtle Beach players went there in June several times to help Joanne
Kendell get Pickleball started in their beautiful Waccamaw Rec
Center. We had about 35 people and so far things are going well.
I went to Lewisburg, PA on vacation in July and taught 5 new people
pickleball. They all loved the game. My son called me 3 weeks ago
and said one of the girls has started it in a gym nearby.
On August 13th, I was invited to attend a Physical Education Faculty
Meeting to teach Physical Ed teachers to play pickleball and how to get
it started in the high schools. There were 32 PE teachers there and
they all played and really enjoyed it. That was a great opportunity to
get it in the schools. Schools from 3 local counties attended. Once
again, I cannot thank my volunteers who come with me enough for
their kind and generous help to spread the good news about this great
game!
As you well know, our 2nd Annual Seaside Classic Pickleball
Tournament will be held on September 26th and 27th. We expect a lot
of participants.

Helpful Hints
How Do I Handle an Overly Eager Partner? It used to bug me when my partner would egg me on to
win the next point, or to not make a mistake when I was already playing the best I could. Besides, calling
my attention to a missed shot or to the importance of the next point is counterproductive. It brings up
my judgmental, critical mind (conscious mind), which is only going to make me play worse. Now, when
my partner urges me to play better, I picture a gentle breeze passing through a screen door. I let his
words pass through me without notice.
How Do I Handle Any Partner? Everyone is different and I suspect a sports psychologist could write a
book on this subject. First, stay positive. Ignore your partner’s errors and congratulate him on his good
shots. If he is making the same error over and over, then you might make a suggestion. But most bad
habits can’t be changed during a match, so it may only make your partner play worse. Second, keep your
partner in the zone. Help him be an observer, not a judge. Be encouraging. Touch paddles to show your
support. Discuss strategy before the point; don't moan about slip-ups after. And don't tell him the next
point is critical and “we gotta win it.” That won't make him, or you, play better.
Q&A
Question: If player prematurely called a ball out to warn his partner not to play the ball. However it
caught the backline, so the player who made the call returned it. The other team had stopped since the
ball was called out. Is this a fault for the team who hit the deep shot or for the team making the
erroneous call, or should it have been played over?
Answer: As clearly stated in IFP Rule 6.D.12.: If, while the ball is in the air, a player yells “out,” “no,”
“bounce it,” or any other word to communicate to his or her partner that the ball may be out, it shall be
considered player communication. If the ball lands in, play will continue. If the out call is made after the
ball has hit the playing surface, it shall be considered a line call and play shall stop. (revised April 1,
2011)

Great job!
The Destin Labor Day Pickleball Classic was exactly that. We had a great time with
all of our participants. Melissa McCurley all the way from Arizona and Carolyn Allaire
(ambassador) LaRae Donnellan, Charlie Giblon, Bob Moffatt and Morales traveled from
Tallahassee, FL. Friday night started out with a 9 team round robin…that’s was 8
games for each time and trust me we felt it at the end of the night. Our first place
winners were Karen Parrish and Ron Bowman with Jon Goyert and Karen Daniels
taking 2nd. Saturday morning came early but everyone was ready. Glad I had the day
off, lol. The women started it off at 9am with a 5 team round robin. Congratulations
are in order for Karen Daniels and Sue Boswell taking the win and Melissa Mcurley and
Angie Chase coming in 2nd. By the way, it was Angie’s second time every picking up a
paddle. Sure don’t want to see her on the other side of the net anytime soon ;) The
men finished it off with a 6 team round robin. Our winner’s going undefeated were
Charlie Giblon and Bob Moffatt from Tallahassee and Randy Herron and Colon Terrell
from Destin, FL taking home the silver. During the intermission of our Saturday
events we gave away some amazing raffle prizes. Many many thanks to Melissa for
proving us with some great prizes donated by Onix Sports, Pickleball
Tournaments.com, IDink wear to name a few. Prizes were also donated from Fresh
Market, Starbucks and Mount Olive Pickle as well. A great time was had by all and we
are already looking forward to our next Labor Day Classic. Enjoy the pictures and we
hope you’ll join us in 2015.

Anna Maria Island Pickleball Club
Membership Code of Conduct
Updated: January 1, 2013
Membership responsibilities:
(1) All players must pay the appropriate fees to the Anna Maria Island Community Centre (AIMCC).
Guests and 1st time players may be allowed one day of "free" play at the discretion of the
AIMCC.
(2) Regular players (two weeks or longer) will also be asked to join the PB club and pay yearly dues
that cover associated costs such as equipment and administrative supplies.
(3) Members bringing playing guests are the member's responsibility. If they are beginners, it is best
to reserve a court for the last hour for practice play. If they have limited experience, it is the
member's obligation to play with them and arrange agreeable matches. Please make sure that your
guests attend to the AMICC fee at the front desk.
(4) As the game grows there is a need for members to assist with training new players. Please
consider volunteering when we have beginner sessions.
Match arrangements:
(1) Beginners should make arrangements for training sessions before joining regular matches.
(2) When a small or even number of players (e.g.: 12 or 16) turn out, the composition of groups
sometimes remains the same with little diversity. To shuffle players, consider splitting and moving
the winners of one court to play against split winners on another court.
(3) Members should be aware of their own skill level and conduct themselves accordingly Consider
the quote from the USAPA “Pickleball is most enjoyed when played by players of comparable
skills”. If you a modest player scheduled to play with three strong players, it may be best to wait
for a more equal match of your peers.
(4) Stronger players should occasionally play with less skilled players adjusting their play
accordingly. The object here is to distribute and assist in the responsibility of accommodating
“light” players. When playing games with a lesser skilled player, fairness dictates that games
should be distributed amongst all those in attendance in order to a majority of games competitive
and enjoyable.
(5) In mid-winter when attendance is heavy, play times for any given day may be split (e.g.: one signs
up for play from 10-12 or others play from 12- 2). If a split schedule is implemented, players are
to cease playing at the end of their allotted playing time slot. Should a shortage of players in the
later session occur, first session players may be invited to stay.
Magnetic Board:
A magnetic board with players’ names is frequently used to arrange matches during periods of high attendance.
When the magnetic board is in use it is everyone’s responsibility to move magnets and call out names for
upcoming matches. There is no ONE person in charge of the board.
General board guidelines (specific details posted on board):
(1) No one shall move another player’s name on the board to alter a player arrangement without the
consent of that player.
(2) If agreeable, two players may do a swap.
(3) At any time a player may move his/her own name “down only” to an open spot to arrange a player
mix that suits them. They then need to inform the others “waiting” that there is an open spot
above them.
(4) Players should add their names to the WAITING section in order of arrival, waiting their turn in
normal play rotation. The first players to arrive (especially those setting up nets and the magnetic
board) should be the first on the court to warm up and play unless otherwise agreed upon.
Good Practices:
1) Be ready to play. Try to determine how soon and with whom you will be playing so that you are
ready to play your next match.
2) When an object (ball, another court’s player, a spectator, etc.) comes into the playing area, the serve
is replayed ONLY when that object causes a distraction or may be of danger to the players, and
“ball” is called prior to the ball being hit by the opponent. Some stray balls are not a distraction and
would be of no danger (such as when it is behind, but off the court) and play continues.
3) When a stray ball comes from another court, the ball should be returned to the person who is serving.
This keeps the play moving and reduces waiting time.
4) If you know a ball is going to be out, try stopping it before it goes onto another court.
5) When your last point of a match results in a stray ball, get the ball back before leaving the court.
6) Non-players should remain out of the way of those playing. When coming on or off the court players
should be as least disruptive as possible to those still playing.
7) Players on the end courts should exit to the ends so as not to disturb the center court play.
8) Upon completing play, if your group is the last to use the court for that session, please take down/put
away the net, and return ball bag to the cabinet in the front desk area.
Reserved Time: When we have 3 or more hours of play, the courts may be reserved by any person or group
for the last hour or hour and one-half depending on the day. The last hour on certain days is reserved for
specific types of play:
Tuesdays, Court 3 reserved the last hour for beginners. Beginner instruction must be pre-arranged and
depends on other players’ willingness and availability.
Wednesdays, Courts 2 & 3 reserved the last hour for Heavy Hitting/Advanced play
Fridays, Courts 2 & 3 reserved the last hour for Heavy/Hitting/Advanced play
Any court not designated for the above use is available for open play and/or reservation. Reservation
sign-up sheets are posted during PB sessions. The reservations are on a first come, first served basis.
Reserved court(s) may be used for instruction, practice, organized group play, etc.
Great information shared with us by Toni Teasdale.
Hello to all who love pickleball... At long last, I am very pleased to announce we have
brand spanking new pickleball courts at Georgia Taylor....!!! 3 of them... with permanent
pickleball lines in a contrasting red on a bright blue court... See picture below...!
To celebrate this accomplishment, I am planning a special event for Saturday September
20th from noon until 4pm for us to all converge on these courts for some fun pickleball
play, fellowship and a pot luck picnic... I will provide the paper products... ! So everyone
bring your pickleball paddles, sunscreen and a pot luck lunch at noon 9/20/14... That's 8
days from now.... Not tomorrow, but next Saturday September 20th...
It wouldn't be a bad idea to maybe respond and let us know if you can indeed attend,
and what you might be bringing so we don't have just bread...
Thanks and God bless,

Keep up the good work!!!
For the first time, we started the tournament on Friday with open play from 2 PM until 6 PM. At
6:30 PM Tom & I sponsored a Mexican buffet catered by Tecali Grille of Canton and entertainment by
"Tunes by Toni". A few players enjoyed the pool and everyone enjoyed the "'60s music" and karaoke.
A "flash mob" composed of Ann Earley, Pat Dunn, Katie Brown, and Carole Hess in Sheriff Joe Arpaio
pink prison boxers assembled around the pool singing "Pickleball Rock". A good time was had by all!

On Saturday morning, registration began at 8 a.m. with players from South Dakota, New Mexico,
Philadelphia, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina, As we have for the past
eight years, we gave each player a long sleeve T-shirt with our tournament logo, breakfast fruit,
water, and lunch from Scott Boys BBQ of Macedonia.
Our Opening Ceremony began at 9:30 a.m. with the Cadets of the Sky Patriots Leadership Camp
featuring the Troops of Fort Blitz Academy lead by Commander Santiago Santana. The Middle School
cadets performed a gun drill and reenactment of the Iwo Jima Memorial before their color guard
presented the flag. The Creekview High School band led by Stephen McCarthy played the National
Anthem, then the games began!
The round robin format for Saturday had three flights of 4.5+ skill level players. Winners were:
Mitch Zorotovich, Jeff Carlson, and Cliff Grabowski. On Saturday morning, three flights of 3.5-4.0 skill
level players played followed by another three flights at 1:30 p.m. Winners were: Jim Kray, Jim
Handberry, and Doug Hale. Afternoon flight winners were Steve Connor, Doug Finley, and Carrie
Palmer.
First place winners didn't receive gold medals, but instead $50.00 gift cards to the Olive
Garden/Longhorn Steaks Restaurant group.
Rodney and Karen Grubbs of Pickleball Rocks had a booth with all of their paddles, clothing, etc. in
the stable hallway along with a table display of Pickleball jewelry by Cindy Moore. The North GA
Pickleball Club displayed their "Onesies", towels, and pink boxers to benefit various charities. The
new Pickleball/Tennis ladies sports apparel designer Lillian Reid of Doue' also displayed several racks
of her new Fall line in the piano studio.
We appreciate all the players who attended the tournament and club members who volunteered
their time and energy. See you next year!
Mountain Lakes Pickleball Club Celebrates Grand Opening
The Mountain Lakes Pickleball Club recently celebrated the Grand Opening of the Clay County, North Carolina, new
and refurbished pickleball courts with over 40 people in attendance. Located in the Clay County Recreation Park,
the four new courts share space with the tennis court. The Clay County Recreation department, with the support
of the Clay County Commissioners, made possible the revamping and development of the courts.
About 16 months ago, we returned to the mountains of North Carolina after spending the winter in Arizona and
being introduced to pickleball. Our thinking was that this was so much fun that we wanted to continue playing and
that the best way to do this was to get pickleball started in our area. We decided to get the word out through
newspaper announcements and placing flyers in selected places throughout the area. Also, the local USAPA
ambassadors from neighboring Macon County, North Carolina, were very helpful and supportive in this process.
Through this effort, a small group assembled who wanted to get the sport started. Some had played pickleball in
other parts of the country, and some were just curious about a sport with such a funny name! We investigated
USAPA and became ambassadors for the newly formed Mountain Lakes Pickleball Club, and started play with two
taped-off courts.
The Mountain Lakes Pickleball Club now has over 75 members and includes participants from both Clay County,
North Carolina and neighboring Towns County, Georgia. From no pickleball courts in the area 16 months ago,
there are now four new outdoor courts in Clay County, with two indoor courts planned, and four outdoor courts
and four indoor courts in Towns County, Georgia. Adjacent Cherokee County, North Carolina, will soon have four
outdoor courts and three indoor courts.
It has been an amazing experience to participate in the growth of the sport and the enthusiasm of the players. One
of the original group of pickleball players, Earle Keirstead, says it best, “Pickleball is a great sport for all ages – and
all are welcome.” In addition to great exercise, pickleball is also a way to meet new people, as Charlanne and Bob
Dixon commented, “How wonderful to have so many new friends and the fun we all have together.” In the
mountains of southwest North Carolina and North Georgia, we can all say “We love pickleball!”

Last year I was contacted by the Winston Salem Tourism Group and the Greensboro
Convention and Visitors Bureau concerning pickleball. Both was interested in running a
pickleball tournament and it would have been the first pickleball tournament in both
places. After meeting with both groups, only the Greensboro Convention and Visitors
Bureau was interested in doing the tournament. I was put in touch with James Goodyear,
the director of the Greensboro Sportsplex and he was excited to host the tournament at
his facilities. James was used to running tournaments for basketball and volleyball but
he had never had the pleasure of working with pickleball players!
I actually introduced pickleball at the center in 2012 and they currently average about 12
to 20 players on any given day that they play. The center is equipped to house 8 pickleball
courts and the facilities is great for hosting a tournament. We had almost 100 participants
from 5 different states (Iowa, NC, SC, Delaware, and Virginia). The couple from Iowa
were on their way to Florida and saw that the tournament was being held around their
traveling time so they signed up for the tournament and played with us! We had a lot of
good press and exposure on Thursday morning (which was our practice day), Friday
morning and Saturday. Check out the article in “Yes Weekly” concerning our tournament.

10 Ways to reduce unforced errors easily and win more games
1.
2.
3.
4.
Step back one foot behind the baseline after serving
Stand one foot behind the baseline when waiting to return the serve
Hit the ball only as powerful as you can be accurate
Keep the ball to your left opponents left foot. Low down the middle of the court
80% of the time
5. Stay away from powerful sharp angle shots unless you are a 4.0 or 4.5 player.
Perfect them by practicing
6. Hit your return of serve as slow as it takes you to get all the way to the nvz line
and be into your ready position early. Play the game “1inch” from the NVZ line
not in “no man’s land”
7. Do not try and win the point when serving or returning serve. Win it at the NVZ
line
8. Always turn towards the opponent that is about to touch the ball and split step
at the point of contact of your opponents touching the ball. Never be moving at
the point of contact of your opponent’s touching the ball
9. Aim your paddle. Keep your paddle motionless for a split second with the face
of the paddle aimed at your target before moving the paddle and hitting the
ball. Do not rush your shots….Even if it is an easy one
10. Make a sound to yourself at the exact point of contact of the ball touching your
paddle. This will make sure you are watching the ball at contact point

PICKLEBALL COMES to POMPEY PARK COMMUNITY CENTER in DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA.

The latest location to play in Delray Beach, Florida is Pompey Park Community Center. This is
an indoor facility with newly finished floors painted with lines for four Pickleball courts. The
first evening of play drew almost 30 players of varying ability. The enthusiasm of our players
is great and a lot of interest has been generated because of word of mouth and publicity. Our
players have developed a great feeling of camaraderie and encouragement.
Pompey Park Community Center is one of the most active Centers in our area. There are lots
of exciting activities for various age groups and interest. In fact, basketball has many kids
coming in to play and have fun along with the after school and summer camp programs.
How to Play the Indoor Environment
Shiny floors, florescent lights, various wall colors… Just being able to SEE the ball on
an indoor court is usually the biggest challenge.
 Use a High Contrast Ball
 Get ready for the ball to slide and skid
 Be patient and be ready for the next shot. Indoor rallies last much longer

Pickleball Improv
By Bob Nibarger – USAPA District Ambassador North Carolina
My wife and I are traveling throughout the Western states this summer and I have
been able to play Pickleball in most every state, at least up until now. We are in
Torrey UT and there is no pickleball for miles. Yes, there are pickleball dead zones in
the U.S.. But wait; there are parking lots, basketball courts and other compacted
services. Yes, pickleball is alive, well in the abbreviated and creative sense, of
course. All it takes is some creativity and the game can go on. In this case, if I don’t
have the room for or want to set up a portable net, simply set up two bicycles for a
net (set seats to 34 inches), put a small rope or tape between the bike seats for a
net, carve out a kitchen area with chalk and you have an instant “dink court”. The
dink game begins with a serve that must land over the net into the no volley zone or
(kitchen) of your opponent. The opponent must return the ball into the kitchen and
back in forth until the point is won. We play regular games to 11. Games can be
modified to be face to face dinking, cross forehand dinks, cross back hand dinks and
so forth. If you want to shorten the game you can play “rally scoring”, meaning a
point is scored on each volley by either player who wins the point. So, in summary,
all you need is a tape measure or pre measured ropes to measure boundaries for a
kitchen, kid’s playground chalk, a parking lot or basketball court and two bicycles and
something for a string net. Now you have an instant “dink court”. You will be amazed
how quickly you can be playing. When finished, you can then take a bicycle ride to
keep your legs in shape. Hope this tip helps you keep in shape while traveling and I
will see you on the court.
You gotta love the creativity.
Great job 

We had a great turnout despite the bad weather. Over 30 people attended with 5 Instructors
teaching the sport of Pickleball. I want to thank Barbie, Jan and Michael and Jennifer, Lowell,
Dennis, Alex and Sonia and most importantly the City of Pompano Beach for building 5
Permanent Pickleball Courts.

providing the equipment for the event. Members of the Sun City
Pickleball Club will be giving free demonstrations and lessons.

Be prepared to play and enjoy the day.
We’re getting close to filling the 3.5 and above
Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed Doubles, so please
let players know that they may get closed out if
they don’t sign up soon.
We are running behind, however, in our 3.0 and
below sign ups. This is unfortunate because we
designed our whole tournament with the idea
of providing an opportunity for intermediate
players to participate in a real tournament
without the intense competition and highly
competitive players that they might experience
in more traditional tournaments. With the
round robin format you will all be guaranteed a
good number of games and a real chance to win
a medal in a more relaxed play environment.
We have tournament flyers available at our
website – www.carolinapickleball.com as well
as at www.usapa.org in the tournament
calendar section.
Click on the Player Self Rating System and you
will see how to rate yourself for the tournament.
Take advantage of this special opportunity to
play in a tournament that was devised with you
in mind.
