Asking the appropriate question
 Additional training and encouragement to all
Quitline counsellors to ask all callers regarding
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin
 When asked of most callers – significant recorded
increase of calls to Quitline from Aboriginal people
 In January 2012 (prior to the question being asked
of all callers), 13 calls were recorded as being
received from Aboriginal callers

Results of asking the
appropriate question
 By December 2012, 95 calls were recorded as
being received from Aboriginal callers (an increase
of more than 70%)
 Asking this question of all callers enables better
understanding of the utilisation of the Quitline
service by Aboriginal people
 Aboriginal women call the Aboriginal Quitline
more frequently than Aboriginal men

The Aboriginal Quitline Coordinator is now working with this community and has
attended 5 Local Health District site visits in the first half 2014.
