Scott Campbell REID NICHOLS - SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE GM / DIRECTOR OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Reid Nichols was named the Special Assistant to the General Manager/Player Development on November 1, 2002. He reports to Doug Melvin and oversees the Brewers minor league department and works on special projects. During the 2005-06 off-season, he relocated to work out of the team’s Arizona complex in Maryvale. In 2003, the Brewers organization earned the Topps Organization of the Year Award and Baseball America rated the Brewers minor league talent level as an “A”. Prior to taking the 2002 season off to work on personal interests, he was the Director of Player Development and Minor League Instruction for the Texas Rangers from November, 1994 through 2001. During his tenure with the Rangers, he took the minor league department from a ranking of 28th to 4th as rated by Baseball Weekly magazine. Before joining the Rangers, Nichols was the Director of Field Operations for the Baltimore Orioles in 1994 and worked as a coach and instructor in the Orioles system from 1991-93. Nichols spent 13 seasons in professional baseball as a player and appeared in 540 major league games for the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and Montreal Expos from 1980-87. He and his wife, Elaine, reside in Goodyear, Ariz., and have three daughters: Amanda, Erin, and Kendall. TONY DIGGS - ASST. DIRECTOR, PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Tony Diggs was named to the position of Assistant Director of Player Development in November 2005. Diggs works at the Brewers’ Training and Development Center. MISC. INFO As the Assistant Director of Player Development, Diggs will have administrative duties while continuing to use his field skills in developing players. 112 In addition to his player development duties, Diggs serves as the organization’s field manager at advanced-rookie Helena in the Pioneer League. He previously served as manager of the Brewers’ rookie-level Arizona League affiliate from 2008-12 and piloted the club to the AZL championship in 2010, earning league Manager of the Year honors in the process. Originally drafted by Milwaukee in the sixth round in 1989, he spent eight years in the Minor Leagues as an infielder for the Brewers (1989-93) and Cardinals (1994-96) organizations. NASHVILLE SOUNDS Milwaukee Brewers Minor League Personnel Charlie Greene enters his eighth season as field coordinator and his ninth season as the roving catching instructor in the Brewers farm system. As a roving instructor, Greene oversees and evaluates the Brewers’ minor league catchers while working closely with each club’s coaching staff. SOUNDS CHARLIE GREENE - MINOR LEAGUE FIELD COORDINATOR Last season, Greene served as the Sounds’ interim manager for nine games in May and led the club to a 2-7 record. Greene spent the last four years of his career playing in the minor leagues (2001-04). He was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 19th round of the 1991 June Draft. His father, Charlie Sr., is one of the best known college coaches, having coached at Miami-Dade Community College for 30 years and as head coach for Team USA in 1988 and 1989. Charlie and his wife, Blake, have two sons, Patrick and Garrett. They reside in Tallahassee, Florida. 2013 IN REVIEW A former major league catcher, Greene broke into the majors with the New York Mets in 1996. He spent five seasons in the majors, also with the Orioles (1997-98), Brewers (1999) and Blue Jays (2000). JEREMY REED - MINOR LEAGUE HITTING COORDINATOR Reed was an outfielder for parts of eight seasons in the Major Leagues with Seattle (200408), New York-NL (2009), Toronto (2010), and Milwaukee (2011). Originally drafted by the White Sox in the second round of the 2002 draft, he batted .252 with 12 HR and 110 RBIs in 483 games in the majors. BREWERS Jeremy Reed, who played for the Sounds in 2011, enters his first season as hitting coordinator. This marks his first coaching position. Last season, Reed went to spring training with the Diamondbacks. He announced his retirement as a player on March 16, 2013. Jeremy resides in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife, Samantha. RICK TOMLIN - MINOR LEAGUE PITCHING COORDINATOR Rick Tomlin begins his second season in the Brewers organization as pitching coordinator. This marks his 25th season in the minor leagues. Tomlin spent four seasons with the Nationals organization as pitching coach at Double-A Harrisburg from 2005-08. Prior to that, he served in various roles in the Yankees organization from 1996-2004, including two seasons as pitching coordinator (2002-04). He was pitching coach at Class-A Tampa in 2001, champions of the Florida State League that season. He also held roles as pitching coach with Triple-A Columbus (1999-2000) and Double-A Norwich (1996-98). RECORDS Prior to being named to his current position, Tomlin spent three seasons in the Mets organization, including the 2011 season as pitching coordinator. He was the pitching coach at Class-A Brooklyn from 2009-10. PCL OPPONENTS A native of La Verne, California, Reed attended Long Beach State University, where he earned First Team All-Big West honors in 2002. He played for the USA Summer National Team from 2001-02 and was a member of the USA Baseball Olympic Qualifying Team in 2003. He began his profesional coaching career in the Twins organization as pitching coach at Rookie Elizabethton (1989-92), Class-A Fort Wayne (1993) and Class-A Fort Myers (1994-95). Tomlin was the assistant coach at Manatee Community College (FL) from 1977-78 and again from 1981-89. He also served as an assistant coach at the University of Alabama in 1979. Rick resides in Bradenton, Florida, with his wife, Suzanne, and two sons, Jake and Josh. 2014 MEDIA GUIDE MISC. He earned his master’s degree in health education from Nova University. 113 SOUNDS Milwaukee Brewers Minor League Personnel BOB MISCIK - ROVING INFIELD INSTRUCTOR Bob Miscik is in his fourth season as the Brewers’ roving infield instructor and sixth overall campaign in the organization after serving as a manager in Milwaukee’s minor league system during each of his first two years. 2013 IN REVIEW In 2010, he piloted the Advanced-A Brevard County club to a 64-75 record. He managed at Double-A Huntsville in 2009 and also served as a coach for the MLB All-Star Futures Game in St. Louis that season. Prior to joining the Brewers, Miscik served as the Reds’ minor league field coordinator in 2005. He held the same position with the Texas Rangers from 1997-2002 and worked as the Rangers’ player development coordinator from 2003-04. Miscik also managed in the Rangers organization at Advanced-A Charlotte in 2000, where he led the team to a 58-43 record after taking over the club on May 15. Prior to his tenure with the Rangers, Miscik spent six seasons with the Baltimore Orioles as manager at three different levels (1991-96), including Low-A Kane County (1991), Low-A Frederick (1992), Triple-A Rochester (1993-94), and Double-A Bowie (1995-96). He began his coaching career with the Orioles as the hitting coach at Frederick in 1990. The former infielder played nine minor league seasons with Pittsburgh (1980-86) and California (1987-88). MARK DEWEY - ASSISTANT MINOR LEAGUE PITCHING COORDINATOR Mark Dewey, who pitched for the Sounds in 2001, enters his third season in the Brewers organization and first season as assistant pitching coordinator. He spent the past two seasons as pitching coach at Advanced-A Brevard County. Before joining the Brewers organization, Dewey spent two seasons as pitching coach for the Washington Wild Things of the independent Frontier League. Under his guidance, Washington’s pitching staff posted a league-best 3.62 ERA in 2011. He also served as pitching coach at Emory & Henry College from 2009-11. Dewey was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 23rd round of the 1987 First-Year Player Draft. In six Major League seasons, he went 12-7 with a 3.65 ERA in 205 relief appearances with San Francisco (1990, ’95-96), New York-NL (1992) and Pittsburgh (1993-94). He tied for third among pitchers in the National League with 78 appearances in 1996, his final season in the majors. Dewey returned to pitching in the winter of 2000-01 (November-January) as a pitcher/pitching coach in Australia. The league was organized by former Brewers catcher David Nilsson. Dewey’s team won the winter league championship. He made 11 relief appearances with Triple-A Nashville in 2001 until a back injury ended his attempt to return to the majors. In 1995, Dewey was honored by his alma mater, Grand Valley State University, when he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. The right-hander was honored with induction into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame in 2011. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dewey founded and pastored a church from 2003-08. During that time, he also served as the local high school’s head coach. Mark and his wife, Monique, have 13 children and reside in Meadowview, Virginia. MISC.
