Expected to be ready by by 2017, it will be far more accurate than the current statistical model in use. With this new system in place, the entire weather forecasting, including the annual monsoon predictions will be closer to accuracy. On Friday, secretary to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Shailesh Nayak inaugurated Aaditya, the high performance super-computing facility at Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) at Pashan, Pune. The new system has a capacity of 790 tera flop, and coupled with another high performance super-computing facility at National Center for Medium Range Weather Forecast (NCMRWF), Noida it can help the IITM to set up an Indian model for weather and climate prediction by 2017. Nayak said that both facilities, including all other infra-structure, has cost the government a total of Rs200 crores. B N Goswami, the director of IITM told media persons that day-to-day weather forecasting is followed by 67% people in the country. Five million farmers are availing benefits from regular real-time agricultural advisories. At present, he said, weather forecasting can be done three days in advance, other facilities such as now-cast is also available. Goswami said that in addition to having a high-performance facility, one needs to have trained manpower to handle such systems. Nayak said that two batches of 20 people each have been trained to use the highperformance facility, with another batch of 20 is undergoing training at a dedicated training school. Nayak further informed that the earlier model was based on 16 parameters, which had been reduced to statistical model based on six parameters. He said that whenever the monsoon is above or below average, the statistical model posed issues, which is why upgradation of the model becomes a continuous process. He said that dynamic model, coupled with statistical model is currently being used by the IMD for predictions.
