This much anticipated event will be organized by the MD Anderson Cancer Center and hosted by the Korean Cancer Association, Yonsei University Health System and Yonsei Cancer Center. Under the theme, “Bridging the Gap through GAP 2014”, this conference will unite more than 1,000 participants from over 50 countries to meet one of the biggest challenges the world faces today, the battle against cancer. This meeting will be a focal point for all to highlight the latest global trends and results of the most recent cancer research as well as to serve as a platform for GAP education and training programs for our younger researchers to advance into the global field of research. The Organizing Committee will provide official sponsors and exhibitors with the chance to raise the recognition of their brands and promote their products through various classes of sponsorship programs. We encourage you to take this opportunity to get involved. Your active participation in GAP 2014 will make for great contributions to the field of cancer. The MD Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas was created in 1941 and is one of the world’s most respected centers devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. Global Academic Programs (GAP) facilitates and administers the MD Anderson’s Sister Institution Network. Comprised of 27 organizations from 20 different countries, it is the largest global network of cancer centers working collaboratively on research and education aimed at lessening the world’s cancer burden. Originally the sister institutes held international academic conferences in Houston, Texas every year up to 2011. However, in order to widen the scope and improve cooperation on research, it was decided in 2012 for sister institutes to hold GAP in even years. The Oslo, Norway conference in 2012 was the first conference held by a sister institute. GAP 2014 in Seoul will be the second conference held outside of the MDACC and will also be the first conference of its kind in the Asia-Pacific area. The aforementioned facts represent how reputable Korea is in the field of international cancer research. In closing, the Organizing Committee extends a warm welcome to all to join us; your wholehearted support will be invaluable to the success of GAP 2014. As we are all greater as one than the sum of our parts individually, we are confident that together we can overcome and, one day, win the fight against cancer. Chul Lee Ronald A. Such an impact has a synergetic effect in the development of other fields including the economy, politics and technology in Korea. Unlike other typical international academic meetings, the GAP conference aims to connect all the representative organizations in each country for common research, and specifically to promote the establishment of closer communication and shared research topics between MDACC and registered sister institutes. The Yonsei Cancer Center is the first and foremost cancer research organization in Korea and also the only GAP sister agency in the country. By supporting and holding the GAP 2014 conference in Seoul, the Yonsei Cancer Center will provide an opportunity for cancer specialists in Korea to share and exchange information with globally reputed cancer research and diagnostics organizations. As the Korean Cancer Association will be co-hosting, GAP 2014 will be able to open the conference to a wider range of participants outside the traditional sister institutes. The expanded network will serve as a motivation for the many cancer researchers in Korea to cooperate and provide critical opportunities for researchers outside of the GAP sister institutes in Northeast Asia to include the participation of Japan, China, and Taiwan and the greater Pacific region. GAP 2014 is expected to serve as important momentum for the Korean Cancer Association and Yonsei Cancer Center to build its global reputation. It will be the opportunity to introduce Korea’s advanced cancer diagnostics and research capabilities to the MDACC, sister institutes and beyond to all world-class organizations in the field. It will be Korea’s chance to take a new leap forward, to lead the world in the field and to support young researchers as well as previous generations in Korea by enhancing passion and hope, as well as kindling the human spirit. It was initially named Kwanghyewon, then evolved into Chejungwon, next Severance Hospital, and finally expanded into the Yonsei University Health System. The Yonsei University Health System opened its most recent facility in 2005. Currently there are about 2,000 doctors and over 7,800 working staff members with a total of 3,137 beds, making it the best hospital in Korea. Its 125 year history has been of a remarkable growth, dedicated to the mission: “With the love of God, free Humankind from disease and suffering”. Based on over a century of devotion and trust, the Yonsei University Health System seeks to grow from its current status as a Northeast Asian medical hub into a fully global medical center. The Yonsei Cancer Center was established by the Yonsei University Health System as the first Korean cancer center in 1969 and has played an important role in Korea cancer research and clinical treatment through collaborating with the Cancer Research Institute. Its excellence has secured the center’s position as a Sister Institute of the MD Anderson Cancer Center, which is the only one in Korea. The center is focusing on the development of research with the goal of raising its international status and expertise in cancer treatment to join the Yonsei University Health System as a world class leader.
