Over the last year, the ladies of Junior League of Erie have been busy
in collaboration with United Way and donor, Nan Held to create a one-of-a-kind
Dolly Parton Imagination Library Reading Nook.
Community organizations applied to host the Nook in their facilities. This spring we announced that the John F. Kennedy Center
(JFK) located at 2021 East 20th was selected as the recipient! Leaguers have been busy procuring donations, remodeling and
decorating the room to have a great space for families to read and enable imaginations to take flight!
The Nook at the JFK Center had some obstacles to overcome, but a dedicated group was there diligently striping wallpaper,
fixing drywall and cement, replacing ceiling tiles and priming walls for mural artist, Heather Cash to transform the room into
Dolly Parton’s front porch from her childhood in the Smokey Mountains. One full wall is painted like a cabin and the two adjoining walls feature fencing, rails and woodland creatures. Of course in the distance on the painted mountains is the Imagination
Train! There’s also a large tree with built-in shelves, housing a full set of books from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL)
donated by League members.

President’s Message
Hello again! Welcome to what may be our biggest Pier of the year! I hope you find it informative,
helpful AND INTERESTING!
It isn’t easy to make everything appeal to everyone, to keep everyone interested, but I feel like that
is one of my roles as President and I take it seriously. Relevant and interesting. To a bunch of women. And not just any women. Strong, confident, hip and sassy, talented Junior League of Erie women. They didn’t put that in the job description ...
I recently read an article called “The Default Parent” (you can find it at www.huffingtonpost.com/us/
entry/6031128?ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000063), it was very interesting and relevant TO ME. Maybe not to
everyone. It made me think of how I would define my roles in life. The most important being a mother,
wife, sister, daughter and friend. But what about all the other roles we play? The ones that aren’t so easily defined by society or even by our own standards. What if we just don’t know? I am sure we all like to
think that we have it figured out. And maybe you do and could come and give lessons at a GMM some
time! But if you don’t, I would encourage you to try to sit down and put down on paper the role you want
to play in a certain aspect of your life. We did this as a group at our November GMM with some stellar
results as to what role each active member will play in the JLE.
Why is this important?
Many of our sustaining, active and even former members are pillars of the community, business
owners, volunteers extraordinaire, board members for other non-profits and for profit companies. How
good would you be at your current role if you had never been in the Junior League? Where would your
business, your career or the community be without trained leadership, and committed volunteers? That
is my favorite thing to think about right now as I dig into this role of President! What am I going to do
with everything I have learned in just 6 months? I can’t wait to find out!
The JLE wants to grow, we want to make sure we are relevant in our community and can continue to
do good things for Erie County. To do that we need more hands on deck. In order to grow we need each
member to play a role in the process of our growth. Sustainers can encourage and support (AND COME
TO MEETINGS AND SHARE OPINIONS) all members can contribute at our volunteer opportunities, and as
we divide and conquer the governance and management of the League, every member will have a better
defined place in the League. Family and friends can support emotionally and financially (and probably
babysit or let the dog out once in a while).
These are all important roles because they bring people to the table. Do we want just anyone at our
table? No, we want someone ready to contribute, ready to play their part in the league to help us obtain
our goals. That’s logical. Are there many roles and a need for diverse women to fill them? Absolutely!
And not just any women. Strong, confident, hip and sassy, talented Junior League of Erie women.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Catherine Fox

Reading Nook Ribbon Cutting
continued from front cover
New wall-to-wall carpeting donated by J’s Flooring and furniture from John V. Schultz helped to transform a former office
space into a room full of possibilities! We hope that the Reading Nook will give caregivers a quiet space to bond with their
children, experience the power of the DPIL library
and allow imaginations to soar! Thank you to all
who have made the Reading Nook a reality. May
your efforts help unlock a lifelong love of reading
in the families who spend time there.

Soft Skills Course
Leads to New Collaborations
The Junior League of Erie has
signed a letter of agreement to
become a referral partner for Dress
for Success Erie. As a program of
Mercy Center for Women, Dress
for Success Erie is committed to
empowering women and enhancing
the dignity of those they serve. This
is a perfect match for our league and
its mission of empowering women
and ties hand-in-hand with the launch
of the new Achieving Self-Sufficiency
Soft Skills course that will be launching later this year.
Dress for Success Erie works with
clients on a referral-only basis. As
a referral partner, the Junior League
of Erie will have the ability to further
assist the women that we serve
through the new program. Any woman
in need who has secured a job, is in
a training program or has a scheduled interview is eligible for services
provided by Dress for Success Erie.
These services include one-on-one
confidence building attention with a
personal clothing consultant who
helps the individual select a professional outfit and accessories. Women who obtain a position are further
eligible for additional outfit(s) to help
them enter the workforce with pride
and all services are free of charge.
Since 2008, Dress for Success
Erie has served over 3,500 women.
The Junior League of Erie is proud to
collaborate with this fantastic program
as one of only 15 organizational
referral partners.
As a show of support for a program
that personifies our mission, the Junior
League of Erie collected many items
of clothing and accessories at the
November GMM. Donations of gently
used suits and other professional
attire, as well as, unopened cosmetics,
leggings, nylons, shoes, purses, and
jewelry will be still be collected at
the December 11th GMM.

United Way Takes Advantage of JLE Activity Kits
As our membership moves its focus to a new area of interest, United Way
of Erie County will continue to make use of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library activity kits developed by the Junior League of Erie. The kits included
four complete lesson plans, for children ages birth through five, as well as, all
supplementary activity supplies. Each lesson includes story time with an age
appropriate book from the library collection, a physical activity, and a takehome craft activity. The kits were handed over to United Way at the end of
September and have already been utilized at a recent Reading Buddies event
that took place at SafeNet.
Community Impact hours are still available for members who wish to volunteer at United Way organized Reading Buddies events.
Office of Children and Youth (OCY) Backpacks
January marks the 90th Anniversary of the Junior League of Erie entering
AJLI. Every year we gather donations for Erie County Office of Children and
Youth. We are undertaking a massive drive this year to celebrate 90 years.
Therefore, the Junior League of Erie is gathering donations to compile 200
backpacks to be provided to the Erie County Office of Children and Youth.
backpacks are distributed to children when they are displaced from their
current living situations, often with little or nothing of their own. backpacks
contain items that will bring the children comfort and/or benefit them in their
new home.
We are asking all Leaguers and Sustainers to help us make this
fantastic anniversary over the top! We are requesting donations and
any other items you feel would benefit these children. The backpacks do not
need to have all the same items so donations of 50 items would be greatly
appreciated. If you, family members, colleagues, etc. would like to make a
monetary donation, checks can be made out to the Junior League of Erie and
mailed to 1903 West 8th Street, PMB 304, Erie PA 16505. We are collecting
items at the December 11th GMM thru January 1st.

Provisional Members are taking classes and community field trips to prepare for their

On October 9th, our modern-day provisionals experienced ‘Throwback Thursday’,

things. Since
the Junior
of Erie’s inception on January 18, 1925, the ladies of
JLE haven’t once hesitated to roll up their sleeves in
order to make a positive impact in the community.
During the roaring1920s, The JLE conducted
occupational therapy work with Hamot Hospital
and Shriners as well as put together a production
of “Wizard of Oz”.Even in the midst of the Great
Depression during the 1930s, The JLE was still able
to remain influential by starting a prenatal clinic
at Hamot Hospital as well as establish the ChildParent Bureau (AKA Family Services of NWPA).
The 1940s saw art classes being taught in various
neighborhoods as well as financial donations being
presented to the Cerebral Palsy Department of Erie
County. While the American economy boomed in
the 1950s, there was still plenty of work to be done
right here at home. The JLE provided volunteers
to the Cerebral Palsy Department, staged several
performances with Children’s Theatre Troupes and
established the Spitz Planetarium.
conducting Junior Philharmonic workshops, establishing the Civic Center Planning Committee and
raising awareness of art in local schools.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the Erie County
Drug Council was established, $20K was allocated
to initiate Hospice of Metropolitan Erie, efforts were
geared towards child abuse prevention and other
women’s resources and mini grants were awarded
to 33 organizations.
The 1990s appeared to be focused on the youth
of Erie as The JLE hosted the Kids Fest at Summer
Festival for the Arts as well as planned and opened
the ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum. Notably, Santa’s
Castle Fundraiser ended its 21-year run in 1998.
The new millennium has also seen its share of
extraordinary developments to include Kids in
the Kitchen nutritional education program, Healthy
Zoo Healthy You! collaboration with the Erie Zoo,
Erie Adaptive Sailing Experience, Dolly Parton
Imagination Library partnership and Soft Skills
Readiness Program Development with GECAC.
As many can attest, The Junior League of Erie
has successfully served the City of Erie and is well
positioned to impact our community for years to
come.

Women building better communities®
The Power of 90! The Junior League is celebrating a momentous achievement!
90 years of serving, learning and leading in Erie! To encourage our continued success at
fulfilling our mission we are asking for a contribution to the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund
monies give the Junior League access to unrestricted resources to continue to implement
important community programs, recruit and train members, provide essential support for
operations of our organization which ensures JLE’s presence in the future.
One person can absolutely make a difference! You have already made a difference with
your time and talents; you can also make a difference with your gifts. Perhaps the JLE has
given you friendships that last a lifetime or, maybe you’ve had the benefit of leadership training, realize its importance and want other women in Erie County to be able to experience
the benefits of AJLI trainings. Your gift can also be made to honor a fellow member or a
loved one. No matter the reason, our purpose remains the same: We need the JLE to grow
so that its positive effects in all aspects of our lives can continue. We make a difference!
How can you choose to give? Write and mail a check to Junior League of Erie indicating
Annual Fund in the memo, donate online at www.juniorleagueoferie.com. New this year,
you have an opportunity to choose how your gift is used, either for training expenses or
increasing membership. You can honor a fellow member or a loved one.
Training We have always struggled with getting members to attend the AJLI
training that is so desperately needed. You can now state that you want your gift
to be used specifically for that purpose by sponsoring a member for an ODI or
conference. Your gift will be recognized by a Training Scholarship Award in
the name of your choice.
Membership The second option will be used to increase diversity in the League. We repeatedly hear from great potential members that they just can’t afford JLE right
now, what a loss! Student debt and the general cost of living for women in the
building years of their life are stopping them from joining the greatest organization
of their life! You can now sponsor a potential member by donating a full or partially
funded scholarship which will be applied to a new members first year. Your
contribution will be recognized as a 1st Year Scholarship Award in your name.
I encourage you to participate and show your support, without you, we can’t stay relevant
enough to make the desired impact in our community. Think about the impact YOU have
made and give others a chance to do the same!
Sincerely, Catherine Fox, President 2014-2015
