SNS Time Sync Quick Start Guide

SNS™ TIME SYNCHRONIZATION
TIME SYNCHRONIZATION QUICK START GUIDE
INTRODUCING SNS™ TIME SYNCHRONIZATION
The Primex Synchronous Network System (SNS) uses your facility's current wired or wireless network infrastructure to provide
synchronized time throughout your facilities. The SNS Time Synchronization system consists of the Application Management Platform
(AMP), Primex clocks and timers that communicate with the AMP over your facility's wireless or wired Ethernet network.
Primex clocks can also be deployed as Network Time Protocol (NTP) only clocks, offering the flexibility to configure clocks for NTP only
synchronization. In NTP only mode, clocks are synchronized with an NTP time source and are not managed or monitored by the
Application Management Platform (AMP). Clocks can be added to the AMP at a later time. For NTP only use information, refer to the
SNS™ Analog and Digital Clocks/Timers NTP Only Installation Guide.
How SNS Time Synchronization Works
Once clocks and timers are configured for the network, they check-in regularly to the AMP to report their status and synchronize their
time. The AMP displays details of the clock connections and analyzes and monitors the data transmitted to the AMP.
The AMP has features to determine the wireless signal strength or wired Ethernet connection status of a clock’s connection to your
AMP system. If the AMP detects that a clock has failed to check-in or other errors occurred, the system automatically generates an alert.
Facilities and IT departments use the AMP to manage clock settings and monitor the status of clocks.
COMPONENTS
SNS Time Synchronization consists of the Application Management Platform (AMP) appliance, web-based AMP software, a Network
Time Protocol (NTP) time source, and Primex AC-, battery-powered, or PoE analog and digital clocks and timers. These SNS clocks and
timers check-in to the AMP at least once per day to synchronize their time and communicate their status over your facility's 802.11 b/g
wireless or Ethernet network.

Clock and Timers
SNS clocks and timers initiate a connection to your facility's network and contain an on-board radio to communicate time
synchronization and performance data to the AMP. The clocks and timers can be mounted in variety of ways and may include mounting
brackets, depending on your installation.
Application Management Platform (AMP)
The AMP is tasked with synchronizing SNS clocks and timers and alerting staff if time synchronization fails or the clock misses a checkin to the AMP. The AMP software's intuitive, web-based interface has functions to efficiently manage hundreds of clocks and timers.
802.11 b/g Wireless or Wired Ethernet Network Communication
Each SNS clock or timer is a node on the SNS Time Synchronization network. Clocks and timers can be configured to communicate with
the AMP via Transmissions Control Protocol (TCP) and Unified Datagram Protocol (UDP) using port 1600 or Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
using port 1601. AMP 5.0 or greater is required for use of SSL.
IMPLEMENTATION
Implementing SNS Time Synchronization typically requires IT and Facilities departments to cooperate on the network configuration for
the AMP and installation of SNS clocks and timers.
1. Plan
Implementation begins by planning where to place clocks and timers and ensuring that the wireless or wired network is available at
these locations.
NOTE:
SNS clocks and timers must have adequate signal to support wireless operation. These devices will work in areas
where a wireless laptop can connect to the network or where signal to noise level measures 20 dB or greater. If
wireless signal is inadequate, a wireless Access Point may be added in proximity to improve local signal strength.
Clocks and timers can also be connected to the Ethernet network via a RJ45 connector.
2. Install and Configure the AMP
The AMP consists of two parts: an AMP appliance (or virtual AMP) and the AMP software.
IT staff members:
l
Install and configure the AMP or virtual AMP and assign it an IP address/Domain Name on your network.
l
License the AMP software, enter network settings and add users.
See the SNS™ AMP Quick Start Guide for more information.
3. Configure Clocks and Timers for the Network
SNS clocks and timers arrive with no knowledge of your network. Before they are installed at their permanent location, they are required
to be configured for the network. During configuring a clock for the network, you will configure the clock with your organization’s AMP IP
Address/Domain Name and the network settings it will use to connect to your facility's network.
l
IT staff members configure clocks and timers to allow them to communicate with the AMP over your facility's network.
See the SNS™ Analog and Digital Clocks/Timers Installation Guide (SNSDOC-019) for more information.
4. Install and Verify Clocks and Timers Connection with the AMP
Once SNS clocks and timers are configured for the network, they are ready to be installed at their permanent location. Once at their
permanent location, verify they can establish a connection to your facility’s network, check-in to the AMP, and synchronize their time.
See the SNS™ Analog and Digital Clocks/Timers Installation Guide (SNSDOC-019) for more information.

5. Manage and Monitor Clocks and Timers from the AMP
As soon as clocks and timers are verified to be operational on the network, IT and facilities staff manage them from the AMP. Continued
set-up procedures include:
l
Configure alert notifications
l
Group clocks/timers for convenient management
l
Set a clock time zone
l
Set clock synchronization schedules
See the SNS™ Clocks Module User Guide (SNSDOC-007) for more information.
