L’année 2014 est un grand cru pour la
Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth :
elle fête son 75ème anniversaire !
75 ans d’histoire d’un projet imaginé par la Reine Elisabeth et Eugène Isaye, 75 ans pendant lesquels de
si nombreux jeunes musiciens ont vécu, travaillé et
partagé des émotions fortes au sein de ce merveilleux
site de la Chapelle Musicale à Waterloo. 75 ans aussi
pendant lesquels les fondateurs, les responsables et
les équipes se sont succédés pour aider au développement de l’institution. 75 ans enfin pendant lesquels les
partenaires et les amis de la Chapelle Musicale ont toujours été là dans les moments heureux et pour affronter les grands défis.
Cet anniversaire, c’est leur anniversaire à toutes et à
tous !
Cet anniversaire sera marqué à la fois par une année
faste en terme de productions et programmes de
concerts et aussi par la concrétisation d’un projet de
développement des infrastructures sur le site classé de
la Chapelle Musicale à Waterloo :
2014 et les festivités du 75ème anniversaire.
Nombreux seront les moments intenses d’émotion
musicale à partager avec les jeunes solistes de la Chapelle Musicale et certains de leurs maîtres, grâce à un
réseau de partenaires culturels intense et fidèle : salles
de concerts, maisons d’opéra, orchestres et festivals.
Parmi ces projets de diffusion, mentionnons plus particulièrement pour le premier trimestre 2014 :
A la Monnaie : Les Mamelles de Tirésias de Francis Poulenc du 15 au 19 janvier 2014. Le concert de Gala du
« 75ème » le 28 janvier 2014 à Bozar (Orchestre Royal
de Chambre de Wallonie, Dumay, Hoffman, Pires et
solistes de la Chapelle Musicale). Un concert Mozart
dans le cadre des « Flagey Piano Days » le 19 février
2014 à Flagey. Et enfin le Prelude Concert du 11 mars
2014 à Bozar, concert mêlant la troupe de chanteurs
et leur maître, José van Dam (Orchestre National de
Belgique et Patrick Fournillier).
Cet anniversaire propose ensuite une série de grands
concerts des maîtres et solistes en résidence à la Chapelle Musicale en compagnie notamment de l’Orchestre National de Belgique, l’Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, l’Orchestre Royal de Chambre
de Wallonie, le Brussels Philharmonic, deFilharmonie,
le Vlaams Radio Koor ou encore l’Orchestre National
de Lille. Début décembre, ce sera au tour de Flagey
d’accueillir le devenu traditionnel « Music Chapel Festival » consacré cette année à Beethoven.

La Chapelle poursuit son essor !
Depuis le mois de septembre 2013, le chantier du New
Building est en effervescence et les nouvelles infrastructures devraient être encore inaugurées avant la fin
de l’année 2014. Ces aménagements et extension permettront de poursuivre la nouvelle dynamique lancée
par la Chapelle Musicale depuis 2004 qui, au terme de
la construction, pourra offrir à l’ensemble des jeunes
musiciens et de leurs professeurs une résidence adaptée au nouveau projet et à notre époque (20 studios
de logement complémentaires, 3 nouvelles salles de

jaar dat zoveel jonge musici leefden, werkten en sterke
emoties deelden in dit prachtige kader van de Muziekkapel in Waterloo. 75 jaar ook dat de oprichters, de
verantwoordelijken en de teams elkaar opvolgden om
hun steentje bij te dragen tot de uitbouw van de instelling. 75 jaar tot slot dat de partners en vrienden van
de Muziekkapel er altijd waren, zowel tijdens de gelukkige momenten, alsook om de grote uitdagingen aan
te gaan.
Die verjaardag is dus hun verjaardag, de verjaardag van
iedereen!
Deze verjaardag gaat samen met een jaar vol producties en concertprogramma’s, maar ook met de concrete vormgeving van een project voor de verdere ontwikkeling van de infrastructuur op de beschermde site van
de Muziekkapel in Waterloo:
2014 en de feestelijkheden rond de 75 verjaardag.

Er staan talloze momenten van intense muzikale emotie op het menu, om samen te beleven met de jonge
solisten van de Muziekkapel en een aantal meesters,
dankzij een uitgebreid en trouw netwerk van culturele
partners: concertzalen, operahuizen, orkesten en festivals. Uitschieters in het eerste trimester van 2014 zijn
onder meer:

Pires en solisten van de Muziekkapel). Een Mozartconcert in het kader van de ‘Flagey Piano Days’ op 19
februari 2014 in Flagey. En tot slot het Prelude Concert
van 11 maart 2014 in Bozar, een concert dat de groep
zangers en hun meester José van Dam samen brengen
(Nationaal Orkest van België en Patrick Fournillier).
Verder wordt deze verjaardag nog gevierd met een
reeks grote concerten door de masters en solisten die
bij de Muziekkapel verblijven, en die onder meer het
gezelschap krijgen van het Nationaal Orkest van België, het Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, het
Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, het Brussels Philharmonic, deFilharmonie, het Vlaams Radio
Koor en ook nog het Orchestre National de Lille. Begin
december is het de beurt aan Flagey om het intussen
traditionele ‘Music Chapel Festival’ te onthalen dat aan
Beethoven gewijd is.
De Muziekkapel zet haar hoge vlucht verder!
Sinds september 2013 zijn de bouwwerken voor de
New Building volop aan de gang. De nieuwe infrastructuur zou nog in 2014 moeten ingehuldigd worden. Deze
herinrichting en uitbreiding zullen mogelijk maken om
de hele nieuwe dynamiek die de Muziekkapel vanaf
2004 lanceerde, voort te zetten. Zo zullen na de bouwwerken alle jonge musici en hun docenten een verblijfsruimte hebben die volledig aansluit op het nieuwe
project en op onze tijd (20 bijkomende woonstudio’s,
3 nieuwe muziek-, repetitie- en opnamezalen die onmisbaar zijn voor de activiteit van de Muziekkapel,
nieuwe leefruimtes, om deze artiesten een heus vast
muzikaal laboratorium te bieden om volop te evolueren).
De Muziekkapel Koningin Elisabeth wil van deze viering gebruik maken om de koninklijke familie te danken
voor haar nooit aflatende belangstelling.
Wij waarderen vooral de inzet en de passie waarmee
onze Erevoorzitster, Hare Majesteit Koningin Paola,
zich al vele jaren aan de Muziekkapel wijdt.

INTRODUCTION
2014 is a vintage year for the
Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, which will
be celebrating its 75th anniversary!
75 years of history for a project conceived by Queen
Elisabeth and Eugène Isaye. 75 years during which so
many young musicians have lived, worked and shared
strong emotions in this marvelous site of the Music
Chapel in Waterloo. 75 years also during which the
founders, officials and teams have succeeded one another to help the institution develop. Finally, 75 years
during which the partners and friends of the Music
Chapel have always been there in happy times and to
take on major challenges.
So this anniversary belongs to all!
It will be marked by a remarkable year in terms of productions and programs of concerts, and also by the implementation of a project to develop the facilities on
the listed site of the Music Chapel in Waterloo:
2014 and 75th anniversary festivities.
There will be many intense moments of musical emotion to be shared with the young soloists of the Music
Chapel and some of their masters in residence, thanks
to an intensive and loyal network of cultural partners:
concert halls, opera houses, orchestras and festivals.
These projects will include in particular for the first
quarter of 2014:
At the Monnaie: Les Mamelles de Tiresias by Francis
Poulenc from 15 to 19 January 2014. The 75th Anni-
versary Gala Concert on 28 January 2014 at Bozar the
Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, Dumay,
Hoffman, Pires and soloists from the Music Chapel).
A Mozart concert as part of the “Flagey Piano Days”
on 17 February in Flagey. And finally, the Prelude Concert of 11 March 2014 at Bozar, which will feature the

The Chapel continues to grow!
The construction site for the New Building has been
buzzing since September 2013, and the new facilities
are expected to be inaugurated by the end of 2014.
These alterations and extension will make it possible to
continue the new impetus initiated by the Music Chapel in 2004 which, in terms of construction, could offer
all young musicians and their masters in residence new

Un centre d’excellence artistique
La formation de chaque musicien est élaborée sur mesure et selon six axes :
1. La formation sous forme de compagnonnage avec
les maîtres en résidence : la présence des maîtres,
poursuivant une carrière professionnelle d’une grande
intensité dans le monde musical, constitue la pierre
angulaire du projet pédagogique. Le compagnonnage
avec le maître s’exprime dans la transmission informelle de l’expérience professionnelle, l’accompagnement et le soutien du maître dans les premiers pas
d’insertion professionnelle du jeune talent musical, et
le vécu des expériences communes où maître et jeune
talent se produisent ensemble.
2. L’insertion professionnelle : un programme particulièrement étendu de concerts et de récitals garantit l’insertion professionnelle des jeunes solistes. La Chapelle
Musicale est en ce sens non seulement «acteur» de la
vie musicale, mais aussi « institution pilote » par ses
liens avec le monde musical à l’échelon international.

3. La promotion des jeunes artistes en résidence : cette
promotion passe notamment par le développement de
la collection de CD de la Chapelle Musicale sous le label
Fuga Libera mais aussi de ses contacts avec la presse
internationale.
Politique discographique de la Chapelle Musicale :
une collection sous le label Outhere (Fuga Libera & Zig
Zag/Territoires) : 8 CDs à ce jour dont 2 avec l’Orchestre
Philharmonique Royal de Liège (Saint-Saëns & Vieuxtemps) et 2 avec le Sinfonia Varsovia sous la direction
d’Augustin Dumay, CDs Dvorak avec Hrachya Avanesyan
et Lalo avec Nikita Boriso-Glebsky, accompagné notamment par le pianiste Jean-Philippe Collard et enfin un
coffret prestige à l’occasion du 75e anniversaire de la
Chapelle Musicale.
5. L’infrastructure : l’ensemble de ce travail se fait dans
un espace et un environnement permettant à la fois la
concentration, le travail, la méditation, la convivialité
et l’échange. La qualité de ce lieu d’exception, la proximité entre l’équipe de la Chapelle Musicale, le corps
professoral et les jeunes talents musicaux fait partie
intégrante du projet pédagogique.
6. Equinox : Département social & artistique, sous
la direction de Maria João Pires. La Chapelle Musicale propose à ses artistes en résidence de s’intégrer
dans notre projet social des Chorales Equinox, l’une
dédiée en Belgique à des enfants en difficulté, l’autre
développée au Burundi en association avec SOS Village
d’Enfants. L’objectif est de partager l’excellence artistique de la Chapelle Musicale, de par ses maîtres et ses
jeunes musiciens, avec des publics qui n’y ont pas naturellement accès : enfants de quartiers défavorisés, souvent multiculturels, en Belgique, ou enfants de régions
isolées et pauvres à l’étranger, souvent dévastées par
des conflits. Les solistes de la Chapelle Musicale sont
invités à partager leur l’art, leur culture, leur plaisir de
faire de la musique. Si l’on considère que la musique
est une valeur contribuant à un certain bien-vivre,
alors on ne peut que souhaiter qu’elle soit accessible
à toutes et tous.
European network of opera academies : Membre fondateur du réseau enoa : un réseau soutenu par l‘Union
Européenne qui regroupe 12 partenaires et dont
l’objectif est de faire circuler, sur 5 ans, plus de 1.000
jeunes et professeurs à travers toute l’Europe, dans 80
ateliers et 10 productions nouvelles.
4. Artists Village : un véritable laboratoire de vie et
de création musicale en Europe. Pour la saison 2013,
la Chapelle Musicale accueille 57 jeunes artistes issus
de 25 pays du monde entier, allant de la Belgique à
l’Amérique Latine, aux Etats Unis, à l’Australie en passant par le Japon, la Chine, la Corée du Sud, la Russie et
de nombreux pays d’Europe. La Chapelle Musicale propose des activités leur permettant de développer des
échanges entre musiciens, d’assister à des workshops
et des conférences.

Een artistiek ‘center of excellence’
De opleiding van elke musicus wordt op maat uitgewerkt, op basis van zes pijlers:
1. De opleiding in de vorm van een ‘compagnonnage-systeem’ met begeleiding door de meesters in
residentie: de aanwezigheid van de meesters, die zelf
een drukke muzikale carrière hebben in de muziekwereld, is de hoeksteen van het pedagogisch project.
Kenmerkend voor deze compagnonnage-relatie met de
meester is een informele overdracht van de beroepservaring, begeleiding en ondersteuning van de meester
bij de eerste stappen van het jong muzikaal talent in
de beroepswereld, en de gemeenschappelijke ervaring
van een gezamenlijk optreden.
2. De professionele inschakeling: een bijzonder uitgebreid programma van concerten en recitals staat borg
voor een gerichte inschakeling van het jong talent in de
beroepswereld. De Muziekkapel is in die zin niet enkel
een ‘actor’ van het muzikale leven, maar geldt ook als
‘pilootinstelling’ door haar banden met de muzikale
wereld op internationaal niveau. Zo heeft de Muziekkapel een sterk netwerk van nationale en internationale partners:

3. De promotie van de jonge artiesten in residentie:
deze promotie gebeurt onder meer door de uitbouw
van de cd-collectie van de Muziekkapel onder het label
Fuga Libera, maar ook via de contacten met de internationale pers.
Discografisch beleid van de Muziekkapel: collectie onder het label Outhere (Fuga Libera & Zig Zag/Territoires): 8 cd’s tot nu toe, waarvan 2 met het Orchestre
Philharmonique Royal de Liège (Saint-Saëns en Vieuxtemps) en 2 met het Sinfonia Varsovia onder de leiding
van Augustin Dumay, cd’s met opnames van Dvorak
met Hrachya Avanesyan en van Lalo met Nikita BorisoGlebsky, begeleid door de pianist Jean-Philippe Collard,
en tot slot een prestigieuze box voor de 75ste verjaardag
van de Muziekkapel.
5. De infrastructuur: al dit werk gebeurt in een ruimte
en een omgeving die zowel concentratie, als werk, bezinning, gezelligheid en uitwisselingen mogelijk maken.
De kwaliteit van deze uitzonderlijke plek, de nabijheid
van het team van de Muziekkapel, het docentenkorps
en de jonge muzikale talenten zijn onlosmakelijk verbonden met het pedagogisch project.
6. Equinox: Sociaal en Artistiek Departement onder
de leiding van Maria João Pires. De Muziekkapel stelt
haar artiesten in residentie voor om zich aan te sluiten
bij ons sociaal project van de Equinox-koren. Het ene
legt zich in België toe op kinderen in moeilijkheden, het
andere wordt uitgewerkt in Burundi, in samenwerking
met SOS Kinderdorpen. Het – eenvoudige – doel is de
artistieke uitmuntendheid van de Muziekkapel, die te
danken is aan haar meesters en aan haar jonge musici,
te delen met publieksgroepen die er anders geen toegang toe vinden: kinderen uit kansarme, vaak multiculturele wijken in België, of kinderen uit afgelegen en
arme gebieden in het buitenland, die vaak zwaar lijden
onder de conflicten in hun streek. De solisten van de
Muziekkapel worden uitgenodigd om hun kunst, hun
cultuur, hun plezier in het muziek maken te delen. Als
we muziek beschouwen als een waarde die bijdraagt
tot een zeker welzijn, dan kunnen we alleen maar hopen dat ze toegankelijk kan zijn voor iedereen.
European network of opera academies. Stichtend lid
van het enoa-netwerk dat steun krijgt van de Europese
Unie. Het bestaat uit 12 partners en heeft tot doel om,
in vijf jaar tijd, meer dan 1000 jongeren en docenten
uit te sturen in heel Europa, voor 80 workshops en 10
nieuwe producties.
4. Artists Village: een heus laboratorium van het leven
en de muzikale creativiteit in Europa. Voor het seizoen
2013 onthaalt de Muziekkapel 57 jonge artiesten uit 25
landen van de hele wereld; van België tot Zuid-Amerika,

A center of artistic excellence
The training program for each musician is tailor-made
and is based on six axes:
1. Training through mentoring by masters in residence: The presence of masters in residence with high
flying careers in the music world constitutes the corner stone of the educational approach. Mentoring by a
master in residence entails an informal handing down
of professional experience, guidance and support to
a young musical talent making his or her first steps
towards career integration, plus shared experiences
where the master in residence and the young talent
perform together.
2. Career integration: A particularly extensive program
of concerts and recitals guarantees career integration
for young soloists. In this sense, the Music Chapel is
not only an “actor” in music life, but also a “guiding
institution” thanks to its contacts with the music world
on an international scale. More specifically, the Music
Chapel maintains a solid network of national and international partners:

3. Promotion of young artists in residence: Young
artists are promoted in particular through the development of the Music Chapel’s CD collection under the
Fuga Libera label, but also through its contacts with the
international press.
Discography policy of the Music Chapel: a collection
under the Outhere label (Fuga Libera and Zig Zag/Territoires): 8 CDs to date, including 2 with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (Saint-Saëns and
Vieuxtemps), and 2 with the Sinfonia Varsovia under
the baton of August Dumay, CDs of Dvorak with Hrachya Avanesyan, and Lalo with Nikita Boriso-Glebsky,
accompanied in particular by the pianist Jean-Philippe
Collard, and finally a prestige box set on the occasion of
the Music Chapel’s 75th anniversary.
5. Facilities: All of this work is carried out in a space
and an environment that are conducive to concentration, work, meditation, friendliness and exchanges.
The quality of this exceptional location, the proximity
between the team of the Music Chapel, the teaching
staff and the young musicians constitute integral parts
of the educational approach.
6. Equinox: Social and Artistic Department headed
by Maria João Pires. The Music Chapel provides the
artists in residence an opportunity to get involved in
the Equinox social projects for choirs, one in Belgium
for children in difficulty, and the other in Burundi in
association with SOS Village d’Enfants. The aim is
simple: to share the artistic excellence of the Music
Chapel, thanks to the masters in residence and young
musicians, with audiences which normally have no
access thereto: children from underprivileged, often
multicultural neighbourhoods, in Belgium, or children
from poor, isolated regions abroad, often devastated
by conflicts. The Music Chapel soloists are invited to
share their art, culture and pleasure in making music.
Bearing in mind that music has a value that contributes
to a certain quality of life, we can only wish that it is
accessible to all.
European network of opera academies (enoa): Founding member of the enoa: A network supported by the
European Union that comprises 11 partners, the aim
of which is to have more than 1000 young people and
teachers go throughout Europe in 80 workshops and 10
new productions.
4. Artists Village: A genuine laboratory of music life
and creativity in Europe. For the 2013 season, the Music Chapel plays host to 57 young artists from 25 countries from all over the world, ranging from Belgium to
Latin America, to the United States, and including Japan, China, South Korea, Russia and many other European countries. The Music Chapel organizes activities
that help young talents to develop contacts among musicians and to attend workshops and conferences.

In 1958, Benjamin Britten programmed an opera by his
friend Francis Poulenc for that year’s Aldeburgh Festival.
This festival had a tradition of performing new opera - not
just by Britten - and over twenty years, an established team
of singers, directors and designers had produced many
works for the first time in the atmospheric little Jubilee Hall
in Aldeburgh. Due to the space limitations Britten decided
to arrange the orchestral score of Les Mamelles de Tirésias
into a version for 2 pianos which he and Poulenc would
play. Peter Pears took the role of the husband (transposed
up for tenor) and there was also a new translation of the
libretto made by himself, Britten and the singer/designer
Colin Graham.
