Wine & Cheese Open House Friday June 27, 2014 FROM THE RECREATION COORDINATOR - Shari Farrell What an exciting summer it’s been! Our June 21st Grand Opening was second to none, and boy did we celebrate! July found us busy relocating from our temporary Craft Room office location into our bright, new and technologically advanced office space! Did you know that our members can also now enjoy coffee with free WIFI access in our comfortable and inviting lobby? All of us at the Centre are just thrilled with the new addition and look forward to the many programs and services the additional space provides! Here are just some of the exciting things we have planned for you this fall! Several new dance programs are being introduced as we make way for our 40th Anniversary Jubilee! Our members can look forward to Belly Dance, Jazz and Tap! New fitness classes include “Plie’-tes” (a fusion between ballet and Pilates) “Balls of Fun” (including use of stability and smaller balls) and “Tranquility” (a relaxing and rejuvenating class). In the arts, we’re introducing Wood Burning and Digital Photography but to name just a few! For those who love to read, why not join our new ASAC Book Club? ASAC and the Ancaster Library have coordinated efforts in introducing what will be an enjoyable 1 x per month Tuesday afternoon club at the Centre come September. We’re also very excited to note that we’ll be having regular Pot Luck Fridays again this September! We know how many members have missed this social event. Plan to also join us for a variety of “Lunch and Learn” dates planned for this fall as well. For those who would like to try their hands at cake decorating, we welcome a Master Cake Decorator, planning to teach us a few tricks at our first “Cupcake Design” Workshop! Watch our newsletter regarding this special workshop and others! There are so many new things to try and do this fall and as always, hope you enjoy our programs! Please feel free to provide your feedback and comments as we love to hear from you! Until next time, enjoy the crisp fall season everyone! Delicious food, friendship, and above all, fun!! Three celebrations in June: Seniors’ Month; Ribbon Cutting; and, our Members’ Wine and Cheese. Maybe not a Guinness World Record, but certainly ‘big time’ for our beautiful little Alberton! Our three room school house, last built in 1954, has come a long way in forty years! Over the four decades ASAC has seen four significant expansions, and many minor and major refits. Our Members, along with our local leaders have given ‘the little school house that was’ a new life and purpose. The 6 and 7 year olds that once roamed the halls have been replaced by 60 and 70 year old adults! And the laughter continues. The Opening of the ‘New ASAC55+’ went well! We optimistically thought our Ribbon Cutting would occur in April or early May. The stars knew better! They were not aligned until June….Seniors Month. Clearly it was an omen, and in hindsight, it was a missed opportunity for another wager, but that’s a story for readers to ponder! The Ribbon Cutting was a gala event. Perfect weather, happy people, and brief speeches! The Grand Hall was ‘wall to wall’ with people. And we had an opportunity to thank our friends for their support. MP David Sweet congratulated ASAC and the City on the success of the project, and Bernadette Curtis brought best wishes on behalf of MPP Ted McMeekin. Councillor Lloyd Ferguson added historical context to our ‘ASAC Moment.’ Lloyd noted he and his brother, former Councillor Murray Ferguson, both attended the Alberton School and he also commented on the role another Councillor Ferguson played in the birth of ASAC. Lloyd and Murray’s Mom, Ancaster Councillor Thelma Ferguson, was instrumental in creating the Centre. It seems fitting that ASAC, a place where friendship is celebrated, is truly a family affair. Perfect! The Ribbon Cutting, despite the ‘serious sized shears,’ went off without an injury! And by the time the ribbon hit the floor, people were heading into the new Lounge. The long awaited “WOW Factor” moment had arrived, and yes, it was ‘WOW!’ The words ‘Beautiful ’and ‘Lovely’ were on many lips! Take a bow my friends: You helped make it happen! There was more to the ‘New ASAC’s’ day in the June sun! Meadowlands Retirement Residence graciously catered the Reception. And it was a ‘Class Act!’ With Meadowlands’ Donna Carlesso and Chef Robert at the helm, the Meadowland’s team brought various platters of sliders. Crab crostini, and prosciutto followed to compete with the hot sweet & sour meatballs. Dessert? Calorie free Venetian crème cannoli, cream puffs, and fruit. And then the chocolate fountain! Professional catering at its best! And once again, we thank Donna and Robert, and their team for making June 21, 2014 an even more memorable day. Oh yes, they ‘liked’ our new kitchen!! June 27th was another gorgeous day! Our ‘Members Wine and Cheese was another fun day, especially for people who couldn’t make it to the Opening. We had a great turnout, so much so we ran out of wine! Our planning process didn’t quite work out! Many of us forgot to RSVP on time, and others just dropped in. And we’re pleased they came, we just regret we ran out of wine. But there is a bright side: We’ll have to have another Wine & Cheese soon to practice our planning! June was eventful: Seniors’ Month; Expansion2013 Ribbon Cutting Reception; and, our Members Wine and Cheese. Fun at its best, and as usual: ‘It was worth the drive to Alberton!’ 24 ASAC GRAND OPENING In Memoriam Wilma Butter, Diane Duggan, Mollie Franklin, Joyce Lowden, Peggy Martin, Robert Mulholland, Joyce Silcox, Dean Taylor, Max Taylor and Christine Venema We extend our deepest sympathy to all who have lost a loved one JOURNAL ADVERTISING: If you are interested in advertising in The Journal, please contact the office at 905-546-2999 Est. 1643 or e-mail Pamela at [email protected] to discuss rates, submission dates, etc. Please submit ads using a jpeg file. 26 COZY CORNER CAFÉ September to June (Closed July & August) Open daily Monday to Thursday 9:30 to 1:00 pm Various menus - check it out when you’re in the Centre.
