A Program of the Physics Department
The Physics Department is one of the four departments under the College of Science at
De La Salle University-Manila. Its vision-mission is to develop lifelong learners, who are
logical, analytical, creative and critical thinkers appreciative of God's creation. The
Department envisions itself as an advocate of effective educational practices in Physics.
The quest for nature's fundamental laws is accompanied by a concerted search for
relevant applications benefiting Philippine society.
The Department aims to
Develop students into graduates imbued with La Sallian values, concerned with the
sustainability of the environment, with an outlook and abilities for lifelong learning, able
to provide service and leadership in the scientific community and in society in general.
Provide an engaging learning environment that will mold students to become Christian
achievers for God and country. Adhere to ethical and professional standards in research
and scholarship. Nurture a culture of research that is dynamic and responsive to the
needs of society.
Objectives

health, industry, business and government.
To provide opportunities for professional growth of faculty members and staff
through research, advanced studies and continuing education.
To offer academic programs that are up-to-date and relevant to the needs of the
community.
To upgrade continually the laboratory and research facilities for effective instruction,
quality research and support for the industry.
Preparing tomorrow’s Physicist
The Physics on the Job Training Program of DLSU-Manila started out as a partnership
with PNRI, St. Luke’s Medical Center, Intel, Hitachi, Littelfuse, and TDK-Fujitsu.
Member companies sought assistance in finding a training/education model that would
help them in recruiting junior staff with research and development potential.
The program, patterned after the dual-tech program in Germany that features terms of
actual experiential learning in the real world of work (on-the-job training), and seeks "to
enable students to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values of
world-class scientist." The students' exposure in the institution is now known as the
PRACPHYS.
The 200 hour program aims to train students in aspects of applied physics geared
towards the student’s specialization: premed, medical instrumentation, materials
science, finance, and economics. It also intends to enhance the hands-on experience of
2401 Taft Avenue, Manila, Philippines • P.O. Box 3819 Manila • Fax (+632) 536-0229 • http://www.dlsu.edu.ph
the students as well as minimize the cost of training of future employees from DLSU
Manila on the part of the participating company.
The Physics on the Job Training Program is on the cutting edge of science education in
the Philippines, providing our students with an opportunity to be exposed to the work
processes and technology of our partner companies, as well as the chance to work in a
company environment. Coupled with the long-standing tradition of excellence in physics
education provided by De La Salle University-Manila, these more than adequately
prepare our students to become tomorrow’s physicists.
Rationale
Companies are in the midst of the challenges as global competition intensifies and as
countries open their companies to foreign scientists, companies are hard-pressed to
constantly improve the quality of services to satisfy the escalating needs and wants of
clients. To do this, companies need to invest in both cutting-edge technology and
competitive human resources.
Consequently, the increasingly competitive science environment has made it imperative
for colleges and universities to upgrade the quality of education and training they
provide their students so that these students could adequately meet the requirements of
companies for productive scientific workers. As a result, colleges and universities have
increasingly sought the cooperation of the world of work in recent years. By closely
communicating and cooperating with the world of work, higher education institutions do
not only improve the education but also the employment opportunities of their students.
Industry-academe cooperation has been advocated because the future tasks of the
graduates and the competencies expected of them are different from job to job.
Constant communication is expected to provide schools with the right signals, even if
they are diverse, contradictory, or vaguely expressed. Industry-academe cooperation is
likewise important because classroom instruction has become inadequate to prepare
students well for the world of work. Studies have shown that "experiential learning" is a
powerful tool supplementing cognitive processes of learning clearly separated from
work.
Since the education sector is the major source of skilled human resources for the
Industry sector, it is important for these two sectors to establish a strong partnership.
Ideally, the graduates of colleges and universities must have the proper knowledge,
values, and skills that address the short- and long-term needs of the industry sector. In
this situation, the cost of retooling new science graduates being absorbed by companies
will be reduced. In addition, colleges and universities need not "waste" time and efforts
in conducting courses that are not needed by the industry.

The Physics on the Job Training Program:
A partnership between industry and La Salle
The PRACPHYS is an educational partnership that seeks to develop today’s youth into
tomorrow’s future scientists. This partnership is based on the philosophy that education
does not only take place within the confines of the school. The experiential learning
students gain from working in an actual hospital organization serves as a powerful tool
to complement the theoretical foundation provided by the school. This way, students
develop their knowledge, values, and skills in two different, yet complementary, learning
environments.
De La Salle University-Manila is able to promote this educational philosophy with the
help of different partner institutions that have supported the PRACPHYS Program by
hosting La Salle students and providing them with on-the-job training through the
PRACPHYS Program.
The institution, in turn, benefit from the PRACPHYS in terms of developing a pool of
young, intelligent, dynamic, and highly trainable individuals who provide valuable
support to their staff. These institutions also get the first crack in hiring these students
when they graduate, and could, in fact, save in terms of training costs because of the
experience gained by the students when they underwent on-the-job training.
Responsibilities of the school
Among the responsibilities of the school in PRACPHYS in particular, are the following:
• Provides students with the theoretical knowledge of the different aspects of
Physics through the different subjects offered
