From father, mother, children and daughter in-law…
Ole-Kirisuah family has chosen Daystar for all their
training needs
Ole-Krisuah (in the middle in a gown) introduces his family members to the guests. From left: Andrew Kokan, and
his son Baraka Kirisuah, Rehema Kokan, Neema Ntalel, Mrs Sarah Kirisuah, Zawadi Sation and Mae Maseto.
It is August 8th 2014, we set out on a drive to Oloilalei
village, down south from Nairobi and off the Namanga
highway on to Konza road and then into the interior vastness
of the Maa’ community land. Never mind, how interior, but
that is the place. To get here, you have to plough through
the bushes, negotiating stones, cows and wildlife. Yes,
there are marked out routes here and it is here a family that
has walked with Daystar since it’s inception, lives. From the
father to the mother, children to now daughter in-law, uncles
and relatives, they all have received their education from
our prestigious institution- Daystar University.
As we drive through the vast land, the valleys and hills, we
are now enjoying the free–to see wildlife. The drive seems
like a “Safari” with zebras, giraffes, gazelles, ostriches and
a variety of birds and other animals all over; alongside the
cows, sheep and donkeys, one is certain that we must be
going through the Maa’ community land where the wildlife
co-exists with domestic animals. However, though we enjoy
this vastness of the nomadic land, the natural aura and
fauna, away from our polluted city, the question that lingers
in our minds is whether actually any one lives this far in; it’s
too interior.
To our surprise, our attention is now drawn to the
emerging peaks of white tents, from where we can already
hear maasai songs from afar. In a few minutes’ drive we
come to the Oloilalei village in Emarti Location, Kajiado
County. It is here, where the whole village has come alive
in song, dance, pomp and colour! The Ole-Kirisuah family
has invited them alongside other dignitaries to attend their
thanks giving ceremony.
Parties to celebrate the success and accomplishments of
graduands are held all over the country and beyond, given
the diversity of Daystar students. An invitation to attend one
such event came from Rev. Josiah Ole-Kirirua, who recently
graduated with an MBA, Strategic Management alongside
his daughter Zawadi Sation who got an Honours in BA,
Psychology and Counseling.
As we pull in we are surprised by the multitude of cars,
parked at free will under tree shades. These are guests from
Nairobi and many corners of Kajiado County. They have
all come to witness this thanks-giving occasion.
In attendance is His Excellency the Governor of Kajiado
County Dr. David Nkedienye, The Rt. Rev. Gadiel Lenini,
Bishop of The ACK Diocese of Kajiado, Hon. Sayiore,
Local Member of County Assembly, Daystar Lecturers Dr.
and Rev. M’Mutungi, Corporate Affairs Manager Mr.
Charles Kilonzo, Daystar students, State house events
director, popularly known as Big Tedd, Robert the CITIZEN
fashion watch show judge, among others.
Neema Ntaliel, Ole Kirisuah’s first-born daughter, a
renowned gospel artiste gets on stage in style to entertain
the guests. The guests seem to know her and what she can
do through her singing talent. The parental joy when one
of your children has a moment of joy is evident in both
Sarah and Josiah Ole-Kirisuah. The guests can’t hide their
satisfaction with some joining in the jig. She truly praises
the Lord and equally entertains the guests. Nataliel too is a
graduate of Daystar University class of 2007.
In his speech Rev. Kirisuah thanked many people who
contributed to his achievement. Among them, his wife Mrs.
Sarah Kirisuah also a graduate of Daystar University, BA.
Honours, Community Development, class of 2006.
When the governor stands to speak and on hearing the
names of some of Daystar’s graduates in the Corporate
world, he states “Daystar University produces smart
people” and he goes straight to commended Ole Kirisuah
for his determination to transform his community, in line
with Daystar’s core values of transformation and servant
leadership. He goes on to say, “Ole Kirisuah has been
instrumental in initiating community projects such as a
school, a posho mill, a church, water projects, among
others”. These are the graduates we need, he adds.
Amongst the many other Daystar graduates present
are Rev. Kirisuah’s daughter-in-law Rehema Kokan, a third
year Communication student at Daystar University. The
KNUT executive Secretary Kajiado County, who is Ole
Kirisuah’s first cousin, is also a recent graduate of Daystar,
a graduation which he shared with his daughter Caroline
Sanau alongside the Kirisuah’s. He has been instrumental in
getting many of his community members choose Daystar for
their higher education.
The guest preacher, Rev. Joseph Kasio, who is Ole
Kirisuah’s uncle attributed his communication skills to a
certificate course he took at Daystar before proceeding
to Canada for further studies many years ago. During his
speech, the MCA reiterated that this was a unique occasion
not heard of in the area.
On this special thanks-giving day, Daystar University
was celebrated for producing the latest stars this time from
the interior of Kajiado; Rev. Josiah Ole Kirisuah and his
daughter Zawadi Sation!

University Community to Observe
Prayer Day
This semester’s Prayer Day will be held on Thursday,
August 28, in Nairobi and Athi River Campuses. The
communal prayers, organized by the Chaplaincy,
will again be held on Friday, August 29, for evening
students in Nairobi Campus.
This semester’s Chapel theme is “Forgiveness”,
drawn from Colossians 3:13; “… Forgive as the
Lord forgave you…” The Prayer Day messages will
also be in line with this, with Rev. Curtis Reed of
Sankofa Ministries speaking in Athi River Campus,
Pastor. Philip Chelule of Deliverance Church,
Eastleigh, speaking in Nairobi Campus and Rev.
Simon Mbevi of Mavuno Church, also speaking
in Nairobi Campus, during the evening students’
prayers.
According to University Chaplain, Rev. Steve
Nduto, the Prayer Day, which is key event in the
University calendar, is aimed at committing the
semester to God. “We aim at beginning the
semester with prayers. These are scheduled on the
last Thursday of the first month, just as students settle
in, in both the January and August semesters,” Rev.
Nduto said. Rev. Nduto hopes that this semester’s
prayers will bring together the Daystar community,
even as they fellowship together. “We will be
praying for Daystar, Kenya, needy students, countries
represented in Daystar, and various issues affecting
us, among others. We’ll conclude it by celebrating
the Holy Communion,” he added.
The day programme in both campuses will run
from 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m., while the evening
programme will be held from 5:30p.m. to 8:00p.m.
All are encouraged to attend and participate.

New Faculty Reading Groups:
This semester, CETL is hosting two new faculty
reading groups.
The Nairobi campus group will be reading and
discussing a new text, Participatory Action Research:
Theory and Methods for Engaged Inquiry. When
CETL conducted a series of workshops on PAR a
few years ago, many of our faculty attended and
found this type of research both new and intriguing.
Tuesdays or Fridays (day and time to be agreed
upon by participants).
The Athi River campus group will be studying,
Servant Leadership for Higher Education. With
one of Daystar’s foundation stones being the
development of servant leaders, this book will
challenge us to be such ourselves.
Wednesdays 3:30 to 4:30, in the Faculty
Resource Centre.
Each group will be limited to eight faculty members
(either full or part-time) who commit to reading the
text, taking their turns in leading the discussion, and
faithfully attending the weekly group meetings. CETL
will provide the books to each participant. Contact
the CETL office (ext. 423 to express your interest)
TED Talks & Tea:
CETL hosts these weekly micro-events (only 30
minutes) featuring TED Talks of interest to Daystar
faculty. Tea, coffee, & drinking water is provided.
TED Talks’s goal is to give everyone access to the
world’s most inspiring voices. Our first TED Talk and
Tea of the semester will be on Tuesday, 27th Aug on
the Nairobi campus and Wednesday, 28th Aug on
the Athi River campus. As a magician & crossword
puzzle constructor, David Kwong mixes puzzles
and prestidigitation. With a background in film
(and degree in the history of magic), he founded
the Misdirectors Guild, a group of magicians that
specialize in illusion for film, television, & theatre.
In this talk he demonstrates how humans are wired
to solve problems and making order out of chaos.
What are the implications for helping our students
learn? How does their innate desire to create
meaning have impact on the learning context?
Nairobi: Tuesdays: 12:30 to 1:00,
venue: Boardroom
Athi River: Wednesdays: 11:50 to 12:20 in the
