Narelle Ong Senior Consultant Narelle has worked as a research and evaluation consultant since 2007. She is skilled and experienced in both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. She conducts interviews and facilitates focus groups and consultation sessions with program managers, staff, clients and other stakeholders. She also designs, administers and analyses surveys. Narelle’s qualifications in psychology inform her work in the health sector. She evaluates largescale health programs, and has particular experience in the evaluation of health promotion and mental health programs. Prior to joining ARTD in 2009, Narelle worked as a consultant for the Matrix Knowledge Group in London. In this role, she provided research, support and advice about equity of access, quality and effectiveness of health services. She was involved in a review of rural healthcare services (Mid Essex Primary Care Trust, 2008), a review of the cultural diversity of senior staff (NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, 2007–08), and identification of metrics for innovative practice in healthcare (UK Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills, 2008). Narelle manages evaluation and research projects across a range of policy sectors, including health, education, youth, and disabilities. She has specialist skills in health sector evaluation and research. Health National Partnership Agreement on Preventive Health (NPAPH): For the evaluation of this large-scale Commonwealth Government investment in preventive health, Narelle conducted site visits and analysed survey and interview data (Australian National Preventive Health Agency, 2012–14). Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol services for expecting and new mothers in Aboriginal communities: Narelle is managing the evaluation of a new model of care, which provides mental health and drug and alcohol clinicians within Aboriginal maternal and infant health services (NSW Ministry of Health 2013–14). Perinatal depression screening in NSW: Narelle co-managed this evaluation of perinatal depression screening services in NSW, which consisted of two state-wide surveys and site visits to sixteen antenatal and child and family health services (Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol Office, 2011–13). NSW Aboriginal Mental Health Worker Training Program: Narelle visited mental health services across NSW to interview managers, service staff and trainees for this evaluation of a state-wide program to train Aboriginal mental health workers and improve service delivery to Aboriginal people (NSW Ministry of Health 2011–13). BreastScreen Victoria mass media campaign: Narelle managed an evaluation of this campaign, drawing on comprehensive data on breast screening bookings and appointments across Victoria (BreastScreen Victoria, 2013). Education Smarter Schools National Partnerships Cross-Sectoral Impact Survey: Narelle managed the analysis of qualitative data from the second and third round of this survey of school staff, which was designed to measure the perceived impact of the different partnerships on NSW schools over time (NSW Department of Education and Communities, 2012–14). Review of school counselling services: Narelle interviewed stakeholders and analysed a survey of school principals and counsellors for the review of school counselling services (Department of Education and Communities, 2011–12). Youth MRes (Psychological Research Methods and statistics), University of Essex, UK (2006) U-Turns for Youth: Narelle developed the evaluation framework for this youth-targeted crime prevention program (Bankstown Council, 2011–12). Camp Quality programs: Narelle supported the initial review of Camp Quality programs, which involved consultation with children with cancer, their siblings and parents. She then managed the follow-up project to consult with Camp Quality volunteers (Camp Quality, 2010, 2011). Administration data, interviews, focus groups and case study site visits will inform the evaluation. Respite Support for Carers of Young People with Profound or Severe Disability and Young Carers Programs: Narelle managed a consultation into future options for the delivery of these two programs for young carers as part of a broader evaluation (Commonwealth Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, 2011).
