The Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the under mentioned courses for the
academic year 2014/2015. Application forms are available at the Institute and Institute Website
1.
CHIEF AND SECOND ENGINEER OFFICER
I
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i.
Holder of a Certificate of Competency as Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch; and
ii.
Must have served for a period of 12 months as officer in charge of an engineering watch onboard ship powered by
main propulsion machinery of 750kW or more

DURATION OF THE COURSE:
The duration of the course is 1 Year. The course is scheduled to start on 29th September, 2014
NB : For Certification the candidate should have her/his sea service assessed by SUMATRA for eligibility prior to
Commencement of the Course

MASTER AND CHIEF MATE
I
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Holder of a Certificate of Competency as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch: and
Must have served for a period of 36 months as officer in charge of navigational watch onboard ship 500 GT or more

DURATION OF THE COURSE:
The duration of the course is 1 Year; the course is scheduled to start on 29th September, 2014
NB : For Certification the candidate should have her/his sea service assessed by SUMATRA for eligibility prior to
Commencement of the course.
3.
OFFICER IN CHARGE OF A NAVIGATIONAL WATCH

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i.
Holder of National Certificate of Secondary School Education with four passes including Mathematics Physics and
English OR
ii.
Holder of Officer in charge of a navigational watch near- coastal
Must have a sea service of 36 months as rating
DURATION OF THE COURSE:
The duration of the course is 1 year. The course is planned to start on 29th September, 2014
NB : For Certification the candidate should have her/his sea service assessed by SUMATRA for eligibility prior to
commencement of the course.

MASTER NEAR- COASTAL

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i.
Holder of officer in charge of navigational watch near-costal And
ii.
Sea service of 12 months
DURATION OF THE COURSE:
The duration of the course is 4 months the course is scheduled to start on 29th September, 2014
NB : For Certification the candidate should have her/his sea service assessed by SUMATRA for eligibility prior to
Commencement of the course.
5.
OFFICER IN CHARGE OF A NAVIGATIONAL WATCH NEAR-COSTAL (OOW <500GT)

i.
Holder of Certificate of secondary Education AND
ii
Must have a sea service of 36 months
DURATION OF THE COURSE:
The duration of the course is 6 months. The course is planned to start on 29th September 2014

commencement of the course.

6.
OFFICER IN CHARGE OF AN ENGINEERING WATCH

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i.
Holder of National Certificate of Secondary School Education with four pass including Mathematics Physics and
English with workshop skills training of 6 months OR
ii.
Holder of Technician Certificate in Marine Engineering (NTA Level 5) or Equivalent
Must have relevant seagoing service of 30 months onboard ship of propulsion power of 750kW or above

The duration of the course is 1 year. The course is planned to start on 29th September, 2014
NB : For Certification the candidate should have her/his sea service assessed by SUMATRA for eligibility prior to
commencement of the course.
7.
OFFICER IN CHARGE OF AN ENGIEERING WATCH LESS THAN 750 KW (Marine Engineer Officer Class 4)

i.

Holder of National Certificate of Secondary Education IV with sea service of 36 months
DURATION OF THE COURSE:
The duration of the course is 6 Months. The course is planned to start on 29th September, 2014
NB : For Certification the candidate should have her/his sea service assessed by SUMATRA for eligibility prior to
commencement of the course.
8.
BACHELOR DEGREE IN MARITIME TRANSPORTATION
I
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i.
Holder of Advanced Certificates of Secondary Education Examination with at least two principal passes in the following
subjects: Mathematics, Physics, and Geography and with at least 3 credits in O level in relevant subjects including
English. The applicant must have a minimum of 4.5 points (where A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, S=0.5, F=0) Or
ii.
Holder of an Ordinary Diploma in Master Fisherman, (NTA Level 6) at least Second Class Or
iii. Holder Ordinary Diploma in Maritime Transportation (NTA level 6) with at least Second Class. Applicants in this category
will join the program at beginning of second year

BACHELOR DEGREE IN MARINE ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
I
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
iv. Holder of Advanced Certificates of Secondary Education Examination with at least two principal passes in the following
subjects: Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, with at least 3 credits in O level in relevant subjects. The applicant must
have a minimum of 4.5 points (where A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, S=0.5, F=0) OR
v. Holder of Full Technician in either of Mechanical, Electronics, Electro technology with at least B grade Or Ordinary
Diploma in either of Mechanical, Electronics, Electro technology with at least Second Class OR
vi. Holder of an Ordinary Diploma in Marine Engineering (NTA Level 6). Applicants in this category will join the program at
beginning of second year

ORDINARY DIPLOMA IN MARITIME TRANSPORTATION (NTA LEVEL 6)

ORDINARY DIPLOMA IN MARINE ENGINEERING (NTA LEVEL 6)

TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE IN MARITIME TRANSPORTATION (NTA LEVEL 5)

TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE IN MARINE ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (NTA LEVEL 5)

Holder of Basic Certificate in Marine Operations (NTA Level 4)

BASIC CERTIFICATE IN MARINE OPERATIONS (NTA LEVEL 4)
I.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i.
Holder of Certificate of Secondary Education (Form IV) with at least four passes including Mathematics, Physics,
Chemistry and English
ii.
Holder of relevant certificate issued by VETA at NTA Level 3 (Trade Test Grade I)

DURATION AND COMMENCEMENT OF THE COURSE:
The duration of the course is One (1) academic year. The course is scheduled to start on 29th September 2014.
ACCESS COURSE FOR BASIC CERTIFICATE IN MARINE OPERATIONS
I
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
i.
Those missing the direct entry qualifications for the certificate in marine operations course as stated above, may
qualify after successfully completing an upgrading course.
ii.
The candidate must possess either of the following minimum qualifications to enter access course
a) Certificate of Secondary Education with at least three passes Non Mathematics Or
b) Certificate of Secondary Education with Trade Test Certificate of at least Grade II offered by VETA or equivalent
qualification.

DURATION AND COMMENCEMENT OF THE COURSE
The duration of the course is Ten (10) weeks. The course is scheduled to start on July, 2014.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Candidates for admission into Bachelor Degree program will lodge their application through the Central admission system
(CAS) under TCU/NACTE therefore application lodged at institute will be nullified.
Candidates for admission into other programs are required to apply direct to the Institute
Non-refundable application fee Tshs. 30,000 or Us$ 30
Payment should be made through the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute A/c No. 011103020561 for payments in TShs. and
No. 012105004460 for payments in USD at NBC bank
Photocopies of certificates and testimonial should be attached
