OVF deployment
This document is intended for SvSAN administrators wishing to deploy VSAs using an OVF file (downloaded
from http://support.stormagic.com/ when vCenter Server is unavailable).
For further information or queries please contact StorMagic Support.
To deploy a VSA using an OVF file:
1. Extract the contents of the OVF archive file.
2. In vSphere Client connect to the desired host.
3. Select File > Deploy OVF Template.
4. Browse to the extracted files and double-click the .ovf file.
5. Confirm the OVF details.
6. Accept the license agreement.
7. Name the VSA and select the datastore you want it to reside on.
8. Set the disk format to Thick Provision Eager Zeroed.
9. Select the networks (vSwitch port groups) you want the VSA interfaces to reside on.
10. Confirm the details then click Finish. The VSA deployment process starts. This creates a 512 MB boot disk,
a 20 GB journal and two vNICs. If more vSwitches are present and more interfaces are desired, add NICs
to the VSA VM (see below).
11. Assign storage to the VSA, using either VMDKs and/or RDMs.
Add additional NICs (optional)
The OVF deploys with two logical NICs, which allows you to choose the port groups to be used.
To add an additional NIC (if required):
1. Right-click the VSA VM from the vSphere inventory then select Edit Settings.
2. Click Add > Ethernet Adapter.
3. In the Network Type screen, set the adapter type to VMXNET 3, select the virtual machine port group to
connect to, check the Connect at power on box, then click Next.
4. Review the information then click Finish. The VSA is powered on.
Get or set the IP address of the VSA
1. Power on the VSA (if it is not already).
2. View the appliance console.
If a DHCP server exists on the network, view the IP address assigned and connect to this IP address in a
web browser.
If no DHCP server is present on the network click into the console, select the desired NIC/interface then
press Enter. The default password is ‘password’. Using the arrow keys move to the DHCP Enabled field
then press Spacebar to deselect this option. Enter a static IP address to allow connectivity to the VSA using

a web browser.
Complete the VSA configuration wizard
1. In a web browser, enter the IP address of the VSA to connect to it. The VSA configuration wizard opens.
The username is ‘admin’ and the default password is ‘password’.
2. Accept the license agreement.
3. License the VSA by connecting to the StorMagic licensing server. If you are not using DHCP, DNS servers
will not have been configured and the address of the server will not resolve. Add a DNS server: in the
console press Ctrl+N and enter the VSA's password.
Alternatively, if the VSA is in a closed environment and is not to have external access, upload a license
activation file (which you have previously downloaded from
https://licensing.stormagic.com/license/download/) to the appliance, using the Upload button located at
the bottom of the Activate page.

4. Set the hostname of the VSA, as it will appear in DNS, and a domain name if required.
5. Set the administration password of the VSA.
6. Set the NTP/iSNS server IP addresses if desired.
7. Create a storage pool for the VSA.
8. View the summary page.
9. Click Finish.
10. Once the VSA configuration has completed, the VSA is fully manageable via the web GUI. To create a
mirror manually, see this technical note.
Set ESXi host/VSA variables
If you want to use the StorMagic vSphere Client plug-in to manage VSAs, set the following annotations on the
ESXi host and VSA.
1. Select the ESXi host then click the Summary tab. In the Annotations panel click Edit > Add.
2. Set the following values for the host (exactly as given below):
Name = StorMagicHost
Type = Host
Value = Yes
3. Click OK. The annotation is added.
4. Click Add.
5. Set the following values for the VSA (exactly as given below):
