LOWER LIGHT We are here! Club History The Phoenix Target Rifle Club was formed by the amalgamation of two clubs that shot on the Dean Range at Port Adelaide. The two clubs were the Adelaide Rifle Club and the Port Adelaide Rifle Club. These clubs, which were both 100 years old, joined together in 2002 shortly before the Dean Range was closed and all of the metropolitan rifle clubs moved to the new range at Lower Light, approx. 40km north of Adelaide (20 minutes from Caltex, Bolivar and 8kms along Light Beach Road). Long Range Target Rifle Shooting is a friendly but exacting sport which is open to shooters of both genders over the age of 14. Some physical handicaps may not necessarily prevent participation. The club welcomes all newcomers to the sport. Equipment is available for their use, and club members are happy to coach new shooters. Falls into four categories, F-Class Standard, F-TR and F-Class Open & Long Range F-Class. There are restrictions on rifle weight, projectiles, trigger weight, sighting magnification, and many other aspects such as thickness of padding in jackets and mats. Distances shot range from 300 meters to 900 metres, on a ICFRA target. With 2 optional sighters and 10 shots to count. We score out of 50, with a ‘V’ in the centre for countouts. Originally military 303 rifles were used, but in 1968 dedicated single shot 308 calibre target rifles were introduced, and there is no longer any connection with the military. These must use 155 gn projectiles. .223 calibre rifles are now also permitted, and these must use 80 gn projectiles. F-Class Standard (Australian Class - Standard Shooting Rules - SSR’s) This particular class use the same rifle as Target Rifle (308W and 223R) but allows telescopic sights and front and rear rests. The weight is restricted to 8kg for the rifle weight combined with sights and all attachments but excluding the front rest. A 10kg limit is imposed for the combined weight with the front rest attached. The minimum trigger release weight is 1kg. F-TR (International recognised class -ICFRA Rules apply) This class is restricted to 308W and 223R, It must be shot from an attached Bi-Pod front rest & rear sand bag. Telescopic sights are allowed. The combined rifle weight (inc. Bi-Pod) is to be under 8.25kg. Unrestricted trigger weights and projectiles make this discipline a great choice for most commercially purchased 223R & 308W rifles. F-Class Open (Australian/Internationally recognised class - SSR’s/ICFRA Rules apply) This discipline allows any caliber up to and including 8mm to be used. A weight of 10kg is allowed for the rifle including any attachments such as telescopic sights etc. The weight of the trigger release is unrestricted for F-Open. An attachment is defined as any device that recoils with the rifle. An example of an F-Open rifle with front rest is shown at the top of this page. Long Range F-Class (Australian Class - Standard Shooting Rules - SSR’s) This discipline is shot under the same technical rules/guidlines as F-Open, though is traditionally shot at the longer ranges ie. 1000yds-1200yds or 900m-1100m.
