ABSA Announcement Related to Mr. Michael Maidens and PEP Consulting Ltd.
Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) is the pressure equipment safety authority for Alberta. ABSA
administers Alberta's pressure equipment safety programs under the Safety Codes Act, and has the
authority to enforce pressure equipment safety as set out in the legislation.
One of ABSA’s mandates is to administer examinations for individuals seeking qualification as power
engineers. ABSA imposes strict rules on individuals taking part in the examination process to protect the
integrity of that process. This is essential to the process of ensuring that all certified power engineers
meet standards of competency.
ABSA became aware that examination preparation courses were being offered by PEP Consulting Ltd.
and Mr. Michael Maidens. Mr. Maidens is a former employee of ABSA, but has no continuing
relationship with ABSA. ABSA learned that questions from its examination banks from October 2003 to
October 2005 were in materials used by PEP Consulting Ltd. and Mr. Michael Maidens. ABSA objected
to the usage of its examination materials by PEP Consulting Ltd. and Mr. Michael Maidens.
ABSA, PEP Consulting Ltd. and Mr. Michael Maidens have been able to resolve ABSA’s concerns through
an agreement.
In summary, in the agreement PEP Consulting Ltd and Mr. Maidens:



Warrant that they have destroyed all ABSA examination materials in their possession and have
agreed to purge all copies of those materials from their files.
Agree not to use ABSA examination materials in their course materials and not to advertise that
they have access to ABSA examination materials or the answers to questions from ABSA
examination materials.
Warrant that they have never intentionally or expressly solicited questions from individuals who
have taken any examinations administered by ABSA and agree that they will not do so in the
future.
The agreement does not prevent Mr. Maidens or PEP Consulting from teaching courses about power
engineering from their own knowledge and experience.
ABSA has no relationship with Mr. Maidens or PEP Consulting Ltd. and provides no endorsement or
approval of any course offered or materials provided by either of them.
