Hearing Loss Is Common in People with Diabetes
by Dr. Terry McIlvaine
Q: Is there a correlation between hearing loss and diabetes?
A: Impaired hearing is twice as common among people with diabetes compared to those without.
Q: What’s the impact on adults with pre-diabetes?
A: Adults with pre-diabetes, whose blood glucose is higher than
normal but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis, had a 30%
higher rate of hearing loss compared to those with normal blood sugar.
Q: If I have diabetes, should I only be concerned with hearing loss if I’m over the age of 60?
A: The link between diabetes and hearing loss is actually stronger among people who were
60 or younger than older adults. Studies show younger people with diabetes had a 2.6
times higher likelihood of impaired hearing.
Q: How does diabetes impact hearing loss?
A: Diabetes may lead to hearing loss by damaging the nerves and blood vessels of the inner
ear.
