Abstract
The Census of Population Map Data Table includes the data used for the Alberta Census of
Population Map.
Full Description
The data in this table includes the Statistics Canada Census of Population data for Alberta for
2001, 2006, and 2011 as well as Census data for non-census boundary areas such as the GOA
Land-use-Framework administrative areas. These data were used to prepare the Alberta Census
of Population Map.
The Alberta Official Statistic for Population (here) uses Statistics Canada's Annual Population
Estimates. This data table uses Census of Population data.

Usage Considerations
The Alberta Official Statistic for Population (here) uses Statistics Canada's Annual Population
Estimates. This data table uses Census of Population data.
The data table for the Census of Population Map shows the distribution of the Census specific
"Population / Dwelling Counts" data themes for various Census geographic areas and for the GOA
Land-Use Framework planning regions.
This data table presents Statistics Canada Census of Population data from 2001, 2006 and 2011.
Statistics Canada provides these data as open data that can be used by governments,
businesses, researchers and individual Canadians to illuminate issues of concern.
Methodology
Population figures presented for Census Divisions, Census Subdivisions and Economic Regions
were extracted from Statistics Canada Census of Population product (98-310-XWE2011002).
These are the unrevised, unadjusted figures for the 2011 Census. The Population of Census
figures presented in this data table are not equivalent to the postcensal population estimates
based on 2011 Census counts that are adjusted for census net undercoverage (including
adjustment for incompletely enumerated Indian reserves) and components of demographic growth
that occurred since the latest census.
The data were analyzed using Statistics Canada’s GeoSuite 2011 application. This application
enables users to retrieve and query data, explore the links between geographic areas, obtain
information on those areas and output data in tabular format. The information available through
GeoSuite includes 2011 Census population counts, 2011 Census dwelling counts, geographic
codes and more.
The Land-use Framework regional areas populations were derived by using Alberta Health's
Dissemination Block Translator File (DBTF) to aggregate the population and dwelling totals for the
Dissemination Blocks (DB) encompassed by each Land-use Framework region. For the 2001
information, the Census Subdivisions that encompass each Land-use Framework planning region
were aggregated to estimate the population and dwelling totals.

Statistics Resource Guide and Statistics Canada Reference Guides
The four geographic boundaries that are presented in the map are:
•
•
•
•
•
Census Divisions (CD)
Census Subdivisions (CSD)
Census Economic Regions (ER)
Land-use Framework Planning Regions (LUF)
Census Division (CD)
Group of neighbouring municipalities merged together for regional planning and managing
common services, such as police and ambulance services. These groupings are established
under laws in effect in certain provinces of Canada. For example, a Census Division might
correspond to a county, une municipalité régionale de comté or a regional district. In provinces
and the territories where laws do not provide for such areas, Statistics Canada defines equivalent
areas for statistical reporting purposes. There are 19 Census Divisions in Alberta.
Census Subdivision (CSD)
Area that is a municipality or an area that is deemed to be equivalent to a municipality for
statistical reporting purposes, such as an Indian reserve or an unorganized territory. Municipal
status is defined by laws in effect in each province and territory in Canada.
In the 2011 Census of Population, there were 435 Census Subdivisions in Alberta: 64 Municipal
Districts (MD), 2 Specialized Municipalities (SM), 17 Cities (CY), 108 Towns (T), 95 Villages (VL),
51 Summer Villages (SV), 81 Indian Reserves (IRI), 4 Indian Settlements (SE), and 3 Special
Areas (SA).
Economic Regions (ER)
An economic region is a grouping of complete Census Divisions (with one exception in Ontario)
created as a standard geographic unit for analyzing regional economic activity.
Changes to Economic Regions for the 2011 Census
In Alberta, the boundary between Edmonton (ER 48 60) and Banff--Jasper--Rocky Mountain
House (ER 48 40) was changed when part of Yellowhead County, MD (48 14 003), was removed
from Census Division No. 14 (CD 48 14) and annexed to Brazeau County, MD (CSD 48 11 032),
in Census Division No. 11 (CD 48 11).
Land-use Framework Planning Regions (LUF)
The Land-use Framework is a comprehensive strategy to better manage public and private lands,
and natural resources to meet Alberta's long-term economic, environmental and social goals. The
framework provides a blueprint for land use management and decision making to address
Alberta's growth pressures. The regions were determined using Alberta's Municipal Districts and
watersheds. There are seven LUF regions in Alberta.
Total private dwellings
A separate set of living quarters designed for or converted for human habitation in which a person
or group of persons reside or could reside. In addition, a private dwelling must have a source of
heat or power and must be an enclosed space that provides shelter from the elements, as
evidenced by complete and enclosed walls and roof, and by doors and windows that provide
protection from wind, rain and snow.
Private dwellings occupied by usual residents
A separate set of living quarters which has a private entrance either directly from outside or from a
common hall, lobby, vestibule or stairway leading to the outside, and in which a person or a group
of persons live permanently.

Privacy and Confidentiality
Statistics Canada is committed to protecting the privacy of all Canadians and the confidentiality of
the data they provide. As part of this commitment, some population counts of geographic areas
are adjusted to ensure confidentiality. Counts of the total population are rounded to a base of "5"
for any dissemination block with a population less than 15. Population counts for all standard
geographic areas above the dissemination block level are derived by summing the adjusted
dissemination block counts. The adjustment of dissemination block counts is controlled to ensure
that the population counts for dissemination areas will always be within 5 of the actual values. The
adjustment has no impact on the population counts of Census Divisions and large Census
Subdivisions.
