Maymester Study Abroad in Istanbul &
Budapest in its 4th year!
In May 2014, 14 students from
GSU participated in Global Business & Media program led by S.
Tamer Cavusgil, Shawn Powers,
and Paula Huntley. The program
has been made possible with generous funding from the Turkish
Coalition of America, CNN, Global
Atlanta/The Payne Fund, The Coca-Cola Foundation, and Advisory
Board members Brad Ferrer and Phil Bolton.
“Amazing, Inspiring, Valuable”
While abroad, students visited Coca-Cola, Turkcell, NTV, Fox TV, Project House, Food Basket, Kitchen Budapest,
Prezi, Korda Studios, and Ustream, and two universities, Marmara University and Central European University.
They also toured and enjoyed the beauty of Istanbul and Budapest. 57 guest speakers contributed to the program by sharing their experiences, insights, and advices with the students, who also developed lasting relationships with their Turkish peers from Marmara University.
Many of the students said that the best part of the program was “receiving something completely unexpected,”
and they are willing to share their experiences and encourage other GSU students to participate in study abroad
programs to broaden their vision.
Jill Martin, a graduate student in Journalism, and a professional writer for CNN and BBC, was enrolled in the
study abroad program to Istanbul and Budapest. Jill interviewed one of the speakers, Ms Defne Tuysuzoglu, a
successful woman entrepreneur. The article can be found here: http://www.bbc.com/news/business28207943.

Maymester Study Abroad in Istanbul &
Budapest in its 4th year!
“Just seeing the ambition of all the startups and the passion they had as well as
how the younger generation in Turkey
is passionate about making a change.”
“Best Trip Ever”
“Life Changingly Fantastic”
“I felt that there is no boundary between the countries even
they are too many miles away from each other. Although we
speak different languages or we came from different cultures,
we are all human. We have common joys and concerns. We can
talk each other not only by mouth but also by hearts.”
“Interesting, Fun, Informative”
Every student who has traveled abroad
with the Global Business & Media program in the last 4 years has been invited to attend an ’Alumni’ reunion
on August 16 at GSU's Indian Creek
Lodge. We would love to see you there!
Please email Paula Huntley at
[email protected] if you can attend.

What’s New in RCB...
Dr. Richard Phillips has been appointed as dean effective July 1, 2014. Phillips
brings a wealth of academic and administrative accomplishments to his new
position.
A risk management scholar, Dr. Phillips joined Robinson in 1994 as an assistant professor and became chair of the Department of Risk Management and
Insurance in 2006. Under his leadership the department shifted from an insurance-centric focus to a broader study of risk dedicated to understanding,
quantifying and developing strategies for managing risks faced by individuals,
organizations and society.
He has served on many college-wide initiatives, including as
chair of the task force that laid the foundation for the college’s
Vision 2020 strategic plan.
Welcome to the New Dean!
The New PACE Program
“We developed PACE as an experiential course where interdisciplinary teams of undergraduate students work as consultants with ‘real world clients.’ The PACE experience enables students to build critical skills that will serve them well in their professional careers. These include problem solving, project
management, client engagement, working in teams, and research skills.
We are delighted to have launched this program with two wonderful clients: the Georgia Food Bank
Association and the Innovation Delivery Team in the Office of the Mayor of the City of Atlanta. Working
under the guidance of faculty mentors, each team has the responsibility to define a work plan that addresses the client’s needs, collect and analyze data, develop findings and recommendations, write a
final report, and make an oral presentation to the client to present findings.
The course is very much aligned with the two goals from the Robinson College of Business Strategic
Plan, Vision 2020. Specifically, the course is consistent with the goal to network our curriculum so that
students understand the connections across course work that must happen across in order to define
and solve complex real world problems. The program also
supports our goal to build embedded relationships with external stakeholders as our students will meaningfully connect with the business and non-profit community in our region.”
-Dean Richard Phillips
“The PACE program is among the most unique educational
experiences at RCB and I’m honored to have been asked to
teach the first class. The eight students that are participating
competed for spots and represent some of our best and brightest… I’m impressed so far by the caliber of their dedication,
creativity and work ethic.”
-Barry Wood
“I am very happy with
the progress the students
are making in their
teams and with the corporate partners. I look
forward to seeing the
program expand so that
40 or even 60 students
can be impacted each
semester.”
