Dear Parents
It has been a busy week this week as you will see from our newsletter today. On
Monday we have a school Open Day. While we are strongly encouraging new
families for next year to come and see our school in action, we also look forward
to seeing our current parents. Open Day runs 8.30-2.30. Please sign in at the
office first. Have a good week. Kathy
Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be
looking for it. Henry David Thoreau
FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Weed Spraying: Parents have talked to us this week with a
concern about weed spraying and which products were used. The
school management has looked into this and there was indeed a generic brand herbicide that contains glyphosate
used after school hours by a contractor in the car park gardens in this instance. We agree that it is preferable and
safer to use non-glyphosate products and have asked that if any future spraying is necessary an alternative pine-oil
product be used. The contractor was not spraying near the kids' gardens or near any of the school buildings. We will
keep working with our contractor regarding ensuring safest practice, including timing. Any routine spraying that has
happened around the school buildings has been in the school holidays. No further spraying will take place until the
September holiday break. We have been working hard to get our gardens looking great this year in response to
parent survey outcomes and we think our gardening contractor has done a wonderful job. We welcome your
thoughts and input.
Junior Playground: Draft plans were tabled last night for an upgrade of the Junior Playground area. These will be on
display in the office from Monday. We welcome your feedback.
THE TREES FOR SURVIVAL PROGRAMME is run by the TfS Charitable Trust, which promotes the growing and
planting of native trees and shrubs to restore natural environments. The TfS programme is an environmental and
educational programme and is designed to involve primary, intermediate and secondary students who learn about
trees by growing and planting them to restore land that is under threat.
The programme was initiated in 2012/13 by WPS, the Rotary Club of Waiheke, Auckland Council and Ivan Kitson from
Waiheke Native Plants. Each year, Waiheke Primary School students will grow up to 1,000 trees in a specially
designed Plant Growing Unit (PGU). Seedlings and soil are donated by local company, Waiheke Native Plants. When
the trees are ready they are planted at a site which has been identified as needing restoration. Our first set of
seedlings was planted on Monday 8th September. Our Year 7/8 students along with Sue Crawshay from Auckland
Council and volunteers from the Pullman Hotel planted close to 500 trees at Rob Fenwick’s property in Orapiu.
Waiheke Primary School would like to extend its appreciation to Waiheke Rotary, Pullman Hotels, Auckland Council,
Waiheke Native Plants and Rob Fenwick
for their ongoing support of this valuable
programme at our school.

Peace weekend on 20/21 September.
Senior children are adopting juniors in the playground and classes will be outdoing their kind actions in a bid to create
