TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION – PLB Series
PALFINGER NED-DECK
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
1. GENERAL INTRODUCTION
The PALFINGER NED-DECK electro-hydraulic painter boom of the PLB series have all been designed for
long time operation under adverse and extreme conditions in a highly corrosive marine environment.
The PLB electro-hydraulic boom is a freestanding deck mounted boom consisting of a pedestal, a slewing
cylinder and a rotating boom.
Main purpose of a painter line boom is to bring the towing line (painter line) away from the moving vessel.
Without the boom the painter line itself will be pulled alongside the hull of the vessel making the recovery of
the work/(fast) rescue boat a dangerous operation. During the recovery of the work/(fast) rescue boat the
mother vessel will preferable maintain a minimum forward manoeuvring speed. Without the boom the FRC has
to move close (or in contact) to the mother vessel to retrieve and connect the painter boom. This can be a
dangerous situation for the crew and might inflict damage to the boat.
When using a painter line boom, the painter line will be towed well clear of the vessel and the crew does not
have to situate themselves close to the hull to collect the line. By having the option of being away from the
hull, the operation will be safer for the crew and equipment.
Secondly (before the hoist and without the boom) the boat is towed alongside the hull and not automatically
underneath the davit. During the first stages of the hoist the boat will start to move both vertically, but at the
same time will start to move sideways to bring the boat under the davit.
This sideways movement will introduce a swing of the boat and can increase danger to crew and equipment.
Using the boom will assure that during the first stages of the hoist the boat is automatically situated
underneath the lifting point of the davit. The boom will tow the boot alongside the vessel under the davit. The
first movement of the hoist will be in a vertical direction and no- or little side movement. This will make the
recovery operation safer for crew and equipment.
Since the working load and outreach of the PLB boom can differ enormously, PALFINGER NED-DECK has
chosen to design the boom in accordance with the specific needs of the client.
2. PEDESTAL
Each PLB is supplied with a pedestal which should be welded onto the ship/rig steel structure or counter
foundation. The pedestal consists of a steel pipe and a flange on which the crane housing with its slewing ring
is placed. The diameter of the pedestal will be determined for each individual project since this diameter
depends on the maximum workload and maximum outreach of the boom.
3. SLEWING CYLINDER
In order to slew the painter boom system will be provided with a slewing cylinder and a cylinder foundation
bracket.
4. PAINTER BOOM/JIB
The boom/ jib consists of hollow section and built from high quality steel. The jib has been provided with
support/foundation and slewing bearing.
5. HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
The PLB series painter line booms are not equipped with an integrated hydraulic system. Oil is supplied from
an external Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) and this is usually incorporated in the design of the davit.
The capacity of the external HPU unit is sufficient to ensure the maximum speed for slewing.
The hydraulic system will of course been provided with pressure relieve valves preventing overloading the
boom.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION – PLB Series
PALFINGER NED-DECK
As a standard, all hydraulic pipes on the boom system are made of stainless steel. Piping work from HPU to
painter boom as well as the last part of the flexible connection (hoses) have to be supplied and installed by the
yard.
The hydraulic fittings however are made of normal mild steel and protected by means of so-called Denso®
tape.
6. CONSERVATION
Unless agreed otherwise, all steelwork will be shot blasted to SA 2,5 and coated with one layer of
Intergard 345 primer of brand INTERNATIONAL, Dry film thickness 100 microns.
This conservation is not suitable for outdoor storage for a long period of time.
