Certain goods and freight commodities, especially containerised freight, is ideal for rail freight, particularly crossing the main areas of Gauteng where the roads are heavily congested. The City Deep container port is heavily congested, and road links are inadequate to handle traffic – roads being upgraded currently. A number of additional major hubs are being planned for Gauteng. 17 STRATEGIC FREGHT CORRIDOR DEVELOPMENT 18 FREIGHT DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY SentraRand Northern Region - Gauteng West Rand Hub Pyramid South Aerotropolis City Deep Sedibeng hub Rural Development (SIP 11) Central Region – Free State NSC (SIP 17) Harrismith Logistics Hub Cato Ridge Southern Region - KZN Tambo Springs Port of Durban Port and Rail Expansions Dube Trade Port Durban DigOut Port Cornubia Integrated Settlement 19 GAUTENG STRATEGIC FREIGHT RING NETWORK 20 5. (7 phases) JOHANNESBURG - REA VAYA • • • 22 Joburg has invested heavily in developing and improving its public transport system. The introduction of the country’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, linked to the Gautrain and the Metrobus, holds tremendous potential for integrating what has historically been a fragmented city. The City of Johannesburg provides two forms of bus services, namely, Metrobus (457 busses) and Rea Vaya Phase 1A(143 busses). On a daily basis, Metrobus transports 75 000 passengers and Rea Vaya Phase 1A moves 40 000 passengers. Rea Vaya Phase 1B was launched in October 2013 and has quickly developed a strong ridership. 23 REA VAYA - Phase 1A Gradual implementation August 2009 to 1 February 2011 41 articulated buses and 102 standard buses in operation 25.5 km of dedicated routes 75.8 km of feeders and complementary routes 30 stations in operation Average weekday passenger trips before strike was 40 000 - over 1 million passengers per month 23 Rea Vaya – Phase 1B -Launched in October 2013 -East-West link in city -Links UJ, Wits, Technikons - Links SABC and News 24 - Links Rahima Moosa and Helen Joseph -Links Coloured Townships -with city centre and White suburbs 24 REA VAYA - 1C 25 REA VAYA – FULL NETWORK (2016/17) 26 27 Tshwane BRT - Phase 1 CBD to Hatfield • Civil Works commenced July 2012 • Hatfield Station construction commenced June 2012 • Sod Turning event July 2012 • Paul Kruger Stations begin July 2012 • Bus Depot construction commenced March 2013 • Operations early 2014 27 28 Phase 1 Modelled Operations Phase 2 Modelled Operations CBD - Hatfield Akasia -Menlyn Soshanguve Phase 3 Modelled Operations Kopanong Mamelodi Ekurhuleni - Phase 1 Corridor 29 Pilot Project: Phase 1 Corridor from Tembisa to Vosloorus - 54km and 56 stations Area Road Name Start: Tembisa, Winnie Mandela Clinic Jabu Ndunge Drive Tembisa & Pomolong Andrew Mapheto Drive Birchacres & Chloorkop Zuurfontein Riebeeck Park CR Swart Kempton Park Pretoria Road OR Tambo International Airport Electron Road, Jones Road Isando and Elandsfontein Jones Road, Yaldwyn and Northrand Road Boksburg Rietfontein, Trichardts, Rondebult Dawn Park, Windmill Park Rondebult Road Holomisa and Villa Lisa Barry Marais Road Vosloorus Sam Sekoati End: New Natalspruit Hospital Nguza Road 30 Aerotropolis Airport more than just aviation infrastructure Multi-modal, multi-functional enterprises Supporting and complimentary commercial functions All commercial functions of a city High non-aeronautical revenue AEROTROPOLIS MASTER PLAN Service provider to develop a Master Plan for the Aerotropolis approved. The Aerotropolis Master Plan should be completed by December 2014. A number of marketing initiatives have been launched. Ekurhuleni Aerotropolis Consultative Conference held on February 2013. Airport Cities World Conference and Exhibition (ACE) hosted in April 2013. Special Purpose Vehicle to be created to manage the project. 31 32 GAUTENG FREEWAY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT AND e-TOLLING Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) was launched by the SANRAL to improve road network in Gauteng. GFIP is the single largest national road project taken up by government in more than 20 years costing R20bn. Address traffic congestion in Gauteng - remove bottlenecks at interchanges by widening freeways to four lanes and construction of new freeways. Construction of new bridges and rebuilding several existing bridges. Based on the “user-pay” principle using electronic tolling. To date, 200km out of 561km of the freeway has been upgraded.
