Federation A win Squash League title
FEDERATION A saw off Mercury MENA
Golden Sands 2-1 to clinch the Mercury
MENA Bahrain Squash League title.
In the clash for the first and second places, played at Khalifa Sports City Stadium,
Mercury MENA got off to a promising start
when Shahid Hussain defeated Federation
A player Yousuf Jamal 10-12, 11-9, 1412,11-2.
In the second match, Federation A player Ahmed Abbas brought his team back in
contention by defeating Mercury MENA’s
Adnan Ehsan 11-5, 11-5, 11-3.
Federation A emerged winners when
Ghous Rehman secured a walkover in the
third match.
Ritz-Carlton, meanwhile, edged past
Golden Sands to secure third position.
In the first match, Asad Ali of Ritz-Carlton defeated Mike Hoy of Golden Sands
11/4, 11/4, 11/4. Ritz-Carlton had another
easy match when Mohammed Tahir outplayed Balint Feyer of Golden Sands 11/5,

Salem in final
BAHRAIN’S Abdulrahman Shehab proved his
top ranking yesterday by
booking a berth in the final of the super singles of the 28th
GPIC Open Tennis Championship
at the Bahrain Tennis Club in Juffair.
Shehab takes on unseeded Anwar
Salem of the Netherlands in the final
scheduled for tomorrow, starting at
5-30pm.
Shehab had to stretch himself, particularly in the first set, before ending the
impressive run of unseeded Jic Jic Bohol of the Phillippines 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the
semi-finals yesterday.
In the other semi-final, which interest-
ingly was an all-Dutch affair which did
not happen, Salem received a walk-over
from Mathys Bloem, who had accounted for third seed Abdulrahman Janahi in
the second round on a day of five upsets
on Sunday.
Upset
One of other major upset caused was
by his compatriot Salem who send second seed Yusuf Qaed crashing out with
equal ease.
The only two seeds to reach the
quarter-finals were fifth seed Karim
Ridha and eighth seed Khalid Almossawi.
The Dutch players were a revelation
in this tournament as Bloem and Salem
n HIS Majesty King Hamad has sent a cable of congrats to Shaikha Hessa bin Ibraheem bin Khaled following her participation and successfully passing all
stages of the Iron Man Race, which was organised on
upset top seeds Shehab and Khalid Al
Thawadi in the second round of the super doubles before going on to capture
the title beating Karim and Ridha Hassan 6-1, 4-6, 12-10.
The men’s singles category also witnessed ups and downs before unseeded
Bahraini A Rahman Shwaiter caused the
upset of the tournament beating top seed
Ali Alasfoor 6-1, 6-1 to claim the title
on Monday.
Cassius Pereira earlier in the week
won the title in the men’s over-45
singles while Ali Khonji and Kamal
Khonji was the corresponding doubles
title.
Riyad Dhaif and Ahmed Omran
claimed the men’s over-55 doubles title.
Lanzaroti Island in Spain.
His Majesty praised Shaikha Hessa’s high competing
spirit at all stages of the race. The King also wished her
further success at upcoming races.
Ice Hockey League
gets DHL backing
DHL Express has signed a sponsorship
agreement with the Bahrain Sharks Ice
Hockey Club, seizing the role of ‘Title
Sponsors’ for the kingdom’s first Ice Hockey League.
The agreement gives DHL Bahrain main sponsorship rights to the league, which started last Sunday.
The Bahrain Ice Hockey League is a first of
its kind for the kingdom. Six teams will play two
games per week over a period of one month. The
games are being held at the Funland Ice Rink and
kick off at 7.30pm. The players comprise both
locals and expatriates.
Turgay Sarikaya, DHL Express MENA Commercial Director, said, “DHL’s decision to sponsor the Bahrain Ice Hockey League stems from
the Company’s deep rooted commitment in fostering local talent and promoting the values and
principles of team play. We are very eager to play
an active role in the first Ice Hockey League in
Bahrain both as sponsors and as mentors to the
team and we hope to take this sport to new levels
within the kingdom and beyond.”
n Shehab makes a return to Bohol
qualified for the semi-finals on
goal difference with Sky International, are placed second in
the group and will play against
Riffa Ford Challengers in the
last-four clash.
Riffa Ford Challengers topped
Group B with a resounding 4-0
victory over Al Komed. Sajid
scored a hatrick while Amjad got
the fourth goal for the winners.
Meanwhile, Group B teams
Companeroes and Indian Club
Liverpool failed to show up
for their last league outing
thus losing out on three crucial
points. Companeroes as a result
are placed second in the group
and will play the Group A toppers Street Fusion in the other
semi-final.
In the U19 category, Riffa
Ford Challengers brushed aside
FC Diablo 1-0 in their last
league match with Mohammed
scoring the all-important goal.
Riffa Ford, however, failed
to qualify as Anson Jewellery, who are placed second in
Group A behind FC Diablo, had
better goal difference.
In Group B, Redox Uniform
Xpress and Incredible Bangkok
will vie for the second place behind Al Kerlawi.
In the U15 category, Riffa
Ford Challengers beat Vipers
FC 3-1 with the help of a brace
by Habib. Dylan scored the third
goal for Riffa Ford, while Lijo
Jose got the lone goal for Vipers.
In another U15 clash, Indian School B beat All Stars 2-1.
Nikhil Mathews and Ahmed
Zamil were on target for Indian
School while Akshay Chandran
scored for All stars.
Strikers Elite and Street
Legends, meanwhile, played a
goalless draw.
Earlier, Dominex FC beat Indian School D 2-1. Vishnu scored a
brace for Dominex while Soham
scored for Indian School.
The U15 quarterfinals will be
played today and the semifinals
and the final along with awarding will take place tomorrow.

first match in straight sets.
