On Tuesday 25 November the ‘unmissable’ UK Debut of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione takes place in London. Thirtyseven Chianti Classico producers will be showcasing their Gran Selezione wines at Sixty One Whitehall. The Gran
Selezione is positioned at the summit of the DOCG’s quality pyramid, above the Chianti Classico Riserva and the
Chianti Classico Annata (year’s vintage) which elegantly expresses the wineries’ finest vineyards. Several producers
are seeking representation in the UK (see producer list at the end of the document).
Master Class Programme
Emily O’Hare will be presenting two special Master Classes with
slightly differing themes:
‘What makes Gran Selezione different from Chianti Classico’
at 15.00 hrs
In October, Emily spent time in Tuscany tasting both the Chianti
Classico and the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione from each winery
presenting their wines at this London debut. This gave her a valuable
overview of precisely what the differences are and she will explore,
with wines to illustrate her findings, the relationship of the two
categories.
‘Sangiovese and its partners’ at 17.00 hrs
There are some who might like to believe that a Chianti Classico should be made from 100% Sangiovese but this was
never the case in the past and today the addition of a small percentage of other grape varieties, whether of Italian
heritage or not, can be a very important element in the construction of the wine. Emily will explore the history of
the variety of differing blends used to produce Chianti Classico and how today’s winemakers have adapted such
blends to increase quality and look also at the opportunities provided by better clones and plant material to produce
wines from 100% Sangiovese.
