QATAR DESIGN AWARDS COMPETITION ENTRY CRITERIA The Qatar design awards recognise and reward outstanding interior design and architecture projects within Qatar. The awards are open to interior designers, developers, operators and architects for design projects located within Qatar. The competition is open to all project types, existing or under-construction. If you would like to enter the awards please read this document carefully before selecting which categories you are interested in. ESSENTIALS JUDGING A judging panel of regional and international experts will take into consideration seven key elements: APPROPRIATENESS & CONTEXT Do the designs deliver the key requirements of the client brief and does it achieve and enhance its functional objectives? AESTHETICS & PRESENTATION The overall aesthetic quality will be judged, including use of colour, texture, and how the design project is presented from the initial concept stage. CREATIVITY & INNOVATION Has the project used new trends, features, techniques and/or technologies? SUSTAINABILITY Does the design take into account green building principles and elements? Have recycled products been used, and were they sourced locally? ADAPTABILITY Outline how the project provides for adaptability to building technology changes and user demands. This should be described as a point of difference. CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Describe how the project demonstrates tangible economic, environmental and social dividends. PROJECT VISION AND INNOVATION Describe, using specific examples, the ways in which the development displays innovation in the project concept and in overcoming site or development complexities. This should be described as a point of difference. Mansions, Palaces, Villa’s) BEST RESTAURANT/F&B OUTLET (Bars, Lounges, Restaurants) BEST RETAIL OUTLET (Boutiques, Showrooms, Stores,) BEST SPA/RECREATIONAL FACILITY (Day Spa, Independent Spa, Hotel/Resort Spa’s, leisure facilities, sports projects, community recreational areas) BEST ART INSTALLATION This award recognizes any artist, museum or entity who has displayed their exhibit in a way which is fitting to its surrounding and has demonstrated innovation, creativity and individualism, whilst also actively contributing to the community. The art installation / exhibit / display must be based in Qatar. BEST SUSTAINABLE INITIATIVE (BREAM, ESTIDAMA, LEED, etc. certified projects across all categories) BEST PUBLIC AND / OR MUNICIPAL SPACE This award recognises innovation within a public or municipal space. Projects either under-construction or completed that are eligible to enter this award category include: Airports, Public Facility, Embassies, Fire Stations, Government Buildings, Performing Arts Centres, Police Stations, Sports Buildings and Stadiums. BEST MIX USE DEVELOPMENT This award recognises innovation in a mixed use development. For the purpose of the award, a mixed use development is a development that comprise of at least three uses of the following: office, retail, residential, tourism and leisure, community facilities, logistics/warehouse, distribution or high technology. BEST LANDSCAPE This award recognises innovation within an outdoor space and landscaped environment. For the purpose of the award, the following are eligible to enter the category: Golf Courses, Hotels, Mixed Use Outdoor Spaces, Parks, Resorts, Private Gardens, and Residential Community Gardens/Landscapes. BEST INTERIOR DESIGNER This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated innovation and flare within the guidelines of the client brief. Nominations for the award should acknowledge innovation, timelessness, aesthetic significance and inspiration within the interior designer’s body of work. The projects and designs submitted must be based in Qatar for consideration. BEST ARCHITECT This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated commitment to dynamic yet feasible design and architecture that harmonises with its surrounding. Nominations for the award should acknowledge innovation, timelessness, aesthetic significance and inspiration within the architect’s entire body of work. The projects and designs submitted must be based in Qatar for consideration. BEST YOUNG ARCHITECT – IN PARTNERSHIP WITH QATAR UNIVERSITY This award recognizes one of the Qatar’s most promising young architects and his/her commitment to strong design, innovative solutions and progressive projects. Nominations for the award should acknowledge the potential within the candidate, not necessarily his/her demonstrated body of work. Note: This category is only open to the students of Qatar University BEST YOUNG DESIGNER – IN PARTNERSHIP WITH VIRIGINIA COMMENWEALTH UNIVERSITY, QATAR This award will recognize one of Qatar’s most promising young interior designers who has consistently delivered innovative, original and effective design solutions across any sector. This category is open to students within Qatar, or those who are working on a Qatari based project. Note: This category is only open to the students of VCU Qatar. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION Project Description Provide a written submission for your entry, providing a brief description of the project, details or the client brief, how the finished project met the client’s brief, and any other relevant information pertaining to the 7 main judging criteria detailed on the previous page. Maximum 1,000 words. Floor plans Please provide 1-3 floor plans of the project, without your company’s name or logos. Floor-plans to be provided in JPEG, JPG, or GIF format only (Resolution 300dpi) Project Images Provide 5-8 images of the completed project, without your company name or logos.
