A Good START
Jacoby Brissett’s long-awaited first start for the Wolfpack ended up being a successful one, as he engineered two four quarterback touchdown drives to give the Pack a 24-23 victory. On those two drives, the hot-handed junior completed 14 of his 16
throws for 136 yards and two TDs
For the game, Brissett completed .700 of his throws (28-40), connecting on three touchdowns and
throwing just one pick. His efficiency mark for the game was the second best for an NC State QB
in his first career start since the turn of the century - dating back to Philip Rivers’ first start in 2000.
That excludes Brandon Mitchell who posted a phenomenal mark last season because he completed
all three of his passes before exiting the game with an injury.

For a second straight
year,
NC
State Athletics and its multimedia rights partner, Wolfpack Sports Properties, will pay
tribute to agriculture in the state of North Carolina by hosting “Ag Day” festivities on Friday
and Saturday.
Ag Day is dedicated to recognizing North
Carolina’s agriculture/agribusiness industry
and celebrating those who work hard to improve the state’s health and economy. The
event is anchored by the NC State College of
Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS).
New this year will be an endowed Ag Day
scholarship, presented to an undergraduate
CALS student, to complement the growing
festivities and sponsorship support in the
event’s second year.

Last season, the Wolfpack was in striking distance in the fourth quarter in six
of it’s nine losses, yet was unable to close the gap. Hopefully, the Georgia
Southern contest is a portent that the team has the confidence and ability to
close out games. In the season opener, State entered the fourth quarter down
10, but put together 99- and 75-yard touchdown drives to seal the victory.
Here’s a look at the games last season where the Pack was close late in the

Happy Dayes
Prior to the season opener, the Wolfpack coaching staff raved
about the fall camp performance of running back Matt Dayes.
That hard work in camp translated to a successful start to his
sophomore campaign, as Dayes tallied 104 all-purpose yards
and scored the game-winning touchdown.
Dayes had six rushes for 34 yards (a 5.7 yds/carry mark) and
six receptions for another 70 yards, including the 35-yard
game-winner.
In the season opener, 10 true freshmen saw action for the Wolfpack, along with five redshirt freshmen. Here’s a look at the

Senior kicker Niklas Sade has a

from 1975-78.
Sade has scored 256 points in his

All three of the Wolfpack’s touchdowns in the season opener were scored by sophomores. Running back Matt Dayes

scoring grabs - his first two collegiate TDs.

Doeren also introduced his “12 Commandments” to the squad when he took over the program. This is a list of attributes that he wants his program to exhibit. During fall camp each year,
each position group takes one of the 12 and presents it to the team.

Sade has already set one NC
State career record with 124 career PATs - the 18th-best mark in
ACC history. With 44 career field
goals, he is seven shy of tying
Mike Cofer’s school mark.
Losing Linebackers
The linebacking corps has taken a big hit due to injuries
in 2014. In the spring, promising incoming 23-year-old
freshman Ty Linton suffered a knee injury. In fall camp,
possible starter M.J. Sallahudin also suffered an injury that
will keep him sidelined for a while. Coult Culler, another
promising incoming player, has also been out due to injury.
Luckily, in the Wolfpack’s new 4-2-5 defense, there are only
two LB spots to be filled. Redshirt freshman Jerod Fernandez got the start at MLB in the opener, while senior Rodman
Noel started at WLB.

linemen, played all 77 snaps in the opener.
Versa-THUNEY-ty
The reinsertion of Rob Crisp in the Wolfpack lineup means
that Joe Thuney (a junior in eligibility who has already graduated) is now back to his true position of guard.
It’s true to our DNA and who we are. It’s a student-athlete
who does exceptional things here on or off the field, graduates, and uses those experiences to accomplish amazing
things when he or she leaves. It’s every bit as much about
a loyal fan base that sticks with us through thick and thin.
A versatile lineman, Thuney started contests at right tackle,
right guard and left tackle in 2013 and saw action as the
Pack’s back-up center as a redshirt freshman in 2012.
The rationale and meaning behind it is fairly simple:
Schooley Stays In
Wolfpack center Quinton Schooley has no idea what the
Wolfpack offense looks like from the sideline. He’s never
been there to see it.
Schooley has played every offensive snap for the Wolfpack
since transferring from Butler Community College prior to last
season - 1,055 total.
Keeping Up With the Joneses
To keep up with the Joneses at NC State, just take a look in
the defensive backfield.
Redshirt junior Hakim Jones is the returning starter at free
safety, has played in every game of his career (26) and is the
second-leading returning tackler on the squad. He led the
team in stops in the opener with 11.
Redshirt freshman Josh Jones is the starter at strong safety
and saw his first collegiate action against Georgia Southern.
He spent his redshirt campaign at linebacker and safety.
•To help us adequately celebrate what’s exceptional about
NC State athletics, both on and off the field of play
•To take a simple concept and infuse deep emotional connection and meaning
•To provide a platform that strikes a balance between
meaningful tradition and modern day relevance
4-2-5
It’s not just the area code for Seattle, the
town with the NFL team including three former Wolfpack players that won Super Bowl
XLVIII. It’s also the defense that NC State
has installed for the 2014 season. It’s the
first time in at least 40 years that the Pack
has used that particular version as its base
defense.

Close-King Indoor Practice Facility
Ground was broken in April for the Wolfpack’s new Close-King Indoor Practice Facility, which will be completed next spring. This privately-funded $14 million
facility will boast a full, 120-yard football field with a roof height sufficient for kicking game and suspended goal posts. There will be additional training and
conditioning space beyond both end zones and four sprint lanes down the full length of the field.
Other features include an in-ground and above-ground pads for long jump, triple jump, high jump and other track events, end zone and 50-yardline viewing
platforms, clerestory windows and glass roll-up doors to allow natural daylight, a complete sound system, and support areas for equipment, strength and

No. 1 in our hearts and game programs:
Jarvis Byrd never thought he’d still be at NC State by
the time the 2014 season rolled around, but three ACL
surgeries later, he was granted a sixth year of eligibility.
He has worked his way back up the depth chart at strong
safety and is one of the top leaders on the 2014 squad.
Fittingly, it was Byrd who broke up the pass on the
last play of the season opener that sealed the win
for the Wolfpack.
To recognize his commitment, loyalty and his unwavering determination to
return to the field, Dave Doeren changed his jersey number to 1 the week
before the season began.

Revving Up the Run
The Wolfpack rushed for 162.7 yards per game in 2013 - the highest average for
an NC State squad since in 16 years (when the 1997 squad rushed for 178.8 yds/
game). In the season opener, the Pack’s rushing committee put up 173 rushing
yards.
The run game should be improved, with increased size, depth and experience on
the offensive line and three returning backs who have great game experience. All
three saw significant action in the opener, as Shadrach Thornton led the team in
rushing with 10 carries for 73 yards, Matt Dayes rushed for 34 yards but had six
grabs for 70 yards and the game-winning TD and Tony Creecy rushed for 31 yards.
None of the three backs was tackled for a loss in the contest.
Those three backs each have strengths that make them unique according to their
position coach Des Kitchings. Thornton is a powerful back, Dayes is good at catching the ball and in the open field, while Creecy is a combination of both.
Un-Freshmen
NC State has the unique benefit of having nine ‘un-freshmen’ on its 2014 squad.
These nine players graduated from high school early and enrolled in school this
past January, going through the entire offseason conditioning program, spring
practice and summer workouts with the veterans. Of the eight position players
in that group, two are currently out with injuries (linebacker Ty Linton and guard
Tyronne Prescod). Of the remaining six, one started the opener and three others
saw action, while five are listed on the current depth chart.
Here’s a look at the Pack’s ‘un-freshmen’ who are listed on the current depth chart

SPECIAL-ists
The Wolfpack is the only program in the power five conferences that boasts a
placekicker, punter and long snapper who will be starting together for the fourth
straight year. Groza Award candidate Niklas Sade, Ray Guy Award candidate Wil
Baumann and returning All-American long snapper Scott Thompson all came to NC
State together in 2011 and have been the starters at their respective positions since
the first game of that season.
Tall Tight Ends
NC State boasts a tall quintet of tight ends on its 2014, as five members of that
group measure 6’5 or taller. The Wolfpack is the only school in the Atlantic Coast
Conference to have as many members of that position group checking in at 6’5 or
taller. Duke has four, Clemson and Miami have three and no other league school
has more than two.
Here’s a look at the ‘Pack’s tall tight ends for 2014:

A Scholly, by Golly
Dave Doeren says one of the most rewarding things about being a head coach is
being able to award scholarships to deserving walkons. This fall, he’s been able
to do that four times. Quarterback Garrett Leatham, cornerback Charlie Twitty,
linebacker Ernie Robinson, and fullback Devin O’Connor.

Youth Movement
NC State had the third-highest percentage of underclassmen on the first day of fall camp
of any team in the nation. The Wolfpack had the second-highest number of freshmen (52)
on its camp roster (Pitt has 53).
Dave Doeren’s squad has just 33 juniors and seniors - the lowest number of upperclassmen for the Wolfpack since 1995.

State played 15 freshmen (10 true and five redshirt) in the season opening win over Georgia Southern.
Continuity
The Wolfpack coaching staff remained mainly in tact after last season, as only
cornerbacks coach George Barlow is new in 2014. Barlow came to NC State
from Vanderbilt, where he had spent two seasons.
Pack in the Front Office
Not only does NC State boast an impressive number of former players on NFL
rosters, but the Pack also is becoming a pipeline to the league’s front offices.
All-ACC guard Steve Keim (1992-95) has been the General Manager of the
Arizona Cardinals since January of 2013 after previously serving as Vice President of Player Personnel, Director of College Scouting and as a regional scout.
His Wolfpack teammate, Morocco Brown, who played linebacker from 1994-97,
was recently named Vice President of Player Personnel for the Cleveland
Browns after spending six seasons as Director of Pro Personnel for the Washington Redskins.
When Brown left for the Browns, another former State player, Alex Santos
(1996-99) took over as the Director of Pro Personnel at Washington after
working in the personnel department for seven years.
Another former ‘Pack linebacker is in charge of the Pro Personnel department
in Chicago, as Kevin Turks (1995-98) holds that position with the Bears.
Several former players are also working as NFL scouts, including John Ritcher
(2002-05) with the Cardinals, Harrison Ritcher (2007-09) with the Browns,
Darrell Moody (1968-70) with the Bills, and Ray Agnew (1986-89) with the St.
Louis Rams.
QBU: Last season, almost 10 percent of the National Football League’s
starting quarterbacks were NC State alums. No other school in the nation
boasted three starting signal callers in the NFL and only two other schools had
two (Florida State and USC).
Russell Wilson, who ranks eighth on
the ACC’s career total offense charts,
led the Seattle Seahawks to a victory in
Super Bowl XLVIII in his second season
in the league.
Mike Glennon started 13 games for the
Tampa Bay Bucs as a rookie last season. Glennon, a third round selection
in the 2013 draft, ranks 30th in ACC
history in total offense and was a twoyear starter for the Wolfpack.
