Summer 2014 - Redland High School for Girls

Summer 2014
Masterchef Victory
Once again contestants have been cooking
up a storm in the annual Masterchef
competition with QEH. Pupils from Redland
High were hoping to retain the title and
dishes ranged from curry to chocolate and
orange soufflé.
Infant Provision
In the end the two Schools shared the victory
with Lucy Griffin winning the competition
alongside James Dickerson from QEH.
Halimah Zahid was also praised for her food
with the judges claiming that her curry was
the 'best curry they have ever tasted' - praise
indeed!
The judging panel, made up of food writer
Tracey Naish, owner of restaurant Brace
and Brown, David Brown, and the Head
Chef at the restaurant, Christian Abbott,
praised the high standard of cooking from
all the contestants claiming that it had been
the hardest Masterchef to judge since they
became involved in the competition.
Happy Campers
Earlier this term, pupils from Year 8 set off for
their camping trip, complete with a School
sleepover. For once they had glorious weather
which they were determined to make the
most of so the trip began with an orienteering
exercise in Ashton Court. In the afternoon the
girls were split into teams and given a limited
budget to purchase food for the Come Dine
With Me style competition that evening. On
their return to School, the girls were delighted
to discover the bouncy castle that had been
delivered in their absence! The next day it was
off for some walking in the Mendips, and a few
games of mini golf, before ending the day with
fish and chips. A great time was had by all!
Engineers of the Future
Isabella Bentley, Miro Huang and Michelle
Zhao have been working with DPS (Bristol)
Ltd to try and develop a production process
that separates residual crude oil from the
water used to extract it from the well.
They recently presented their design and
project report to a team of technical
experts, alongside 29 other teams from
throughout the South West of England,
all working on similar projects, as part of
a national initiative to help Sixth Form
students have a better understanding of
the opportunities available from studying
Engineering. The girls' project was judged
to be so impressive that they each received
a Gold CREST award, one of just five
such projects from a total of 30 teams.
Congratulations Isabella, Miro and Michelle!
Day’s Eye 2014
You may wonder why you are receiving a newsletter at the end of the Summer Term, rather
than the School Magazine. In future the School Magazine will be published in September,
rather than the traditional publication date of June, enabling us more accurately to reflect
the full academic year and to provide the most up to date examination results. This means
that the 2014 edition will cover two sets of examination results and prize giving ceremonies
and will therefore be a slightly larger edition. All future magazines will reflect one full
academic year and will be supported with a newsletter at the end of each term.
We are delighted to announce that we have
been granted planning permission for the
new building in the Junior School. This
exciting development will form part of
‘Redland High Infants with QEH’ and we
are extremely pleased to say that there has
been a huge level of interest from current
parents and prospective parents for boys and
girls. We have a limited number of places
remaining for entry into Lower or Upper
Foundation in September 2014, and are
already taking registrations for entry into
Year 1 from September 2015.
Money Management
This term Year 10 pupils have been
undertaking an exciting new project as part of
their Education for Life lessons. Each group
was given a £10 note and one simple objective:
to make as much profit with that money as
possible by creating products for sale. The
pupils used their imagination and creativity to
produce a wide range of products, including
novelty rubbers, bath bombs and tie-dye socks.
The girls were highly motivated by the task
and one team made over 700% profit!
Farewell to Year 13
We bid a fond farewell to our Year 13 leavers
at the Leavers’
Dinner earlier this
term, starting the
evening with the
traditional drinks on
the terrace with staff.
We hope they have
a wonderful summer
and wish them all the very best of luck in the
next stage of their lives.
New Website
Some of you may have noticed that our
website has had a makeover. The new design
features updated photography, testimonials
from many of our current and former parents
and pupils and links to our facebook and
twitter pages, as well as our new online
community, Redland High Connect. If you
haven’t been on the website already, please do
have a look.
Orienteering Success
BBC Schools Report
Girls from Redland High have been reporting
the news for real this term.
On 27 March, a team of enthusiastic
journalists took part in the BBC News
School Report, which gives students in the
UK the chance to make their own news
reports for a real audience.
The Redland High BBC School Report Team
perfected the skills required to publish their
news by 1600 GMT on the day and dealt
extremely well with the pressure!
During the Easter holidays
pupils jetted off to Greece
for a Classics department trip.
Blessed with beautiful weather
the girls had the opportunity
to see Greek theatres, the
ancient site of the Olympics,
temples and even climbed the
Acropolis. Sites visited include
Athens, Corinth, Epidavros,
Tolon, Mycenae and Delphi.
It's not surprising that some
declared it to be their best
School trip to date!
Redland High are the Avon Schools’
Champions! After 8 gruelling events, we
have come out on top of the Avon Schools'
League, beating Wells Cathedral School,
Kingswood School and Bristol Grammar
School amongst many others.
The key to our success has been
commitment and a fantastic team spirit.
Congratulations to Georgina Jarman, Elenor
Naraidoo, Abigail Ehrlich, Katherine Knapp,
Kathryn Saunders, Emily Finnimore, Elizabeth
Faulkner, Felicity Beard, Sylvie Livingstone, Ella
