Stratis Health Beginning Its Work
This issue
as Part of the Lake Superior Quality Patient Safety 2
Innovation Network
In July, the Centers for Medicare &
Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded
a Quality Innovation Network Quality Improvement Organization
(QIN-QIO) contract to support
its work improving health care for
Medicare beneficiaries in Minnesota,
Michigan, and Wisconsin. The new
contract took effect August 1, 2014.
Stratis Health of Minnesota, MPRO
of Michigan, and MetaStar of
Wisconsin are now collaborating as
the Lake Superior Quality Innovation
Network. The three organizations are
responsible for QIN-QIO activities in
their respective states.
Recruiting is getting underway for the
five-year QIN-QIO contract work,
which will focus on health care quality
improvement initiatives that include:
• Improving cardiac health and
reducing cardiac health care
disparities
• Reducing disparities in diabetes care
• Improving prevention coordination
through health information
technology
• Reducing health care associated
infections in hospitals
• Reducing health care acquired
conditions in nursing homes

“This regional collaboration of Stratis
Health, MPRO, and MetaStar
brings together three like-minded
organizations with a proven track
record in quality improvement to serve
Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin,”
said Jennifer Lundblad, president
and CEO of Stratis Health. “Our
partnership will draw on one another’s
strengths and sharing of best practices.”
As the Lake Superior Quality
Innovation Network, the three
organizations will continue to work
with a broad range of providers,
communities, and partners on
data-driven quality initiatives to
improve patient safety, reduce
harm, and improve clinical care and
transparency at the local, regional,
and state level.
Greg Simmons, MetaStar president
and CEO, noted “We’re excited to
be able to extend our decades of
experience as Quality Improvement
Organizations and to continue to focus
on improving health care for Medicare
beneficiaries in our region.”

This publication features a selection
of topics that will advance the
professional knowledge about HAIs,
such as:
• Reducing cardiac and surgical
site infections (SSI), including
surveillance techniques
• Overcoming staff barriers in ICUs
to prevent infections
• Decreasing antibiotic overuse in
primary care
• Reducing HAIs in dialysis centers
• Improving antibiotic use in
nursing homes

CHAIN Web Event:
Slashing Surgical Site
Infection: Raising the Bar
to Lower the Rate
October 14, 2014
Surgical site infection (SSI) is the
most common and costly health
care-associated infection, occurring
in up to five percent of patients
undergoing inpatient surgery. Annual
costs are estimated at $3.5 billion
to $10 billion, and the emotional
and physical costs to patients are
staggering, including lengthened
hospital stays, readmission, and
death. Experts estimate that up to
60 percent of SSIs are preventable.
The Minnesota (MN) Slashing SSI
bundle elements were carefully selected
by a group of OR professionals and
surgeons convened by Minnesota’s
Collaborative Health Care Associated
Infection Network (CHAIN). This
webinar will help health care teams
understand the rationale behind using
evidence-based bundle guidelines to
prevent SSIs.
Physicians, non-physicians providers,
nurses, administrators, risk managers,
patient safety officers, and other health
care professional staff will learn to:
1. Identify the elements of the MN
Slashing SSI bundle
2. Describe the rationale behind the
selection of bundle elements
3. Appreciate the leading role
surgeons play in slashing SSI
4. Understand the shift in thinking
required to make significant and
timely progress in SSI prevention
Speakers:
• Jamie Bakkum-Gamez, MD,
Board-certified gynecologic
oncologist at the Mayo Clinic
• Chad M. Robbins, D.O., FACOS,
