Newsletter Léman International School - Chengdu January 24, 2014 Issue 20 Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents, Well today marks the end of semester 1 for the 2013 – 2014 academic year. Over the past 6 months, students have had some great learning opportunities academically, in the sporting arena and culturally at Léman. Semester 2, after the holidays promises to be just as exciting and challenging, and we will be welcoming 9 new students into our school community. Last Saturday, we had a group of students participate in the CISA Chess competition. In the secondary division, we had 3 students in the semi-finals and Pirath Rottananon won the primary school section. Congratulations to all our competitors and thank you to Darren Gale for looking after the teams. It was fantastic to see so many parents supporting the festivities. Well done to the Chinese teachers and students for all the hard work preparing performances and activities for today’s celebration – another great day! Events Calendar Tang Dental clinic will be visiting Léman on the February 11 and 12 to offer free dental check-ups for  Chinese New Year all students. After their visit, a report will be given advising families of any recommended follow-up treatment. As part of their service to our school, Tang dental will offer free teeth cleaning to Léman students and parents at their JinYang(51# Xixia Road) and ZiJing (78# of West Zinjing Road) clinics up until 31 May, 2014. Chess News On Saturday 18th January, nine students from Léman took part in the CISA Chess at QSI. For many of the students, this was the first time they had taken part in a competitive chess tournament, though obviously not the first time they had played chess, as evident from the excellent results. The secondary students managed to obtain three of the four semifinal places. Jun Pyo represented Léman in the final losing out in a tense match played in a quiet room, with the board being video linked into the canteen for the audience. In the Primary, the competition was equally fierce. Alessandro won against Pirath in the first match of the day, though both made it through to the semi-finals. Leonardo just missed out on a semi-final place on time. The first match of the semis was a stalemate with Alessandro unable to take advantage of being a queen up on Pirath. Pirath won the second board and then the final. Congratulations to all our competitors, in secondary Jun Pyo, Tae Woong, Josiah, Ha Yeon and Edward. The primary students who took part were Na Yoon, Alessandro, Leonardo and Pirath. Chinese Class News 我们学习了关于中国新年的词语：马，灯笼，中国结，鞭炮，汤圆，饺子，压岁钱等等。我们学习了关于三明治的词语并且亲自做了三明治。 We have learnt the words about a sandwich and also have made the sandwich by ourselves. “春天在哪里呀，春天在哪里？”一年级和二年级的小朋友在冬日温暖的阳光下欢快地唱着这首中文歌。 “Where is the Spring?”G1 and G2 students are singing this Chinese song while enjoying the beautiful winter sunshine. “ 他们想像出来的人物长什么样子……？”吉老师3、4年级的学生在根据同学的描述画出人物的外貌。 “What will this person looks like?” G3 and G4 Students in Ms. Ji’ s class are drawing pictures of imaginary people which were created by each group. 一二年级的学生开始学习自己写拼音，并开始练习写与自己生活有关的句子。 G1 & G2 students are practising writing about themselves in Chinese. 幼儿园大班小朋友们在学习写字。SK students are doing writing practice. 每周都有五个新字需要认读。有一些结构简单的汉字需要小朋友们按照笔画顺序来写。看，我写得多棒！We learn to recognize 5 new characters every week. We also write several simple structure characters, following the right strokes. Look! I can write. 识字和读书是幼儿园大班学生们最喜欢做的事情。 Reading is one of our most favorite things. “这是我得到的小星星！” 一年级和二年级中级班的同学在展示他们在汉语课上获得的小星星。 “These are the stars I won this semester!” G1 & G2 intermediate level students won so many stars this semester. 三四年级的学生课堂汉字写作。 G3 & G4 Students are writing Chinese sentences. 不同年级的学生们在为春节表演准备节目。 Students are practicing songs for Chinese New Year performance with different grades.
