Keynote Presentation | 9.00am - 10.00am
After initially undertaking a Human Movement degree in Leeds, Ian Renshaw completed his
Post Graduate Certificate of Education in Physical Education at Loughborough University,
coming under the influence of Rod Thorpe and Dave Bunker, the founders of Teaching Games
for Understanding - TGfU. After initially teaching in a high school in England, Ian moved into
lecturing in higher education where he completed a Masters degree in Sports Coaching before
completing his PhD on Interceptive Actions in cricket in 2005. Ian has been coaching for 31
years. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at QUT, Brisbane working with future P.E teachers and
sport scientists. Ian is passionate about improving sports experiences for children (and adults).
Ian has worked with the Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence as a skill advisor and continues to coach and provide
coach education across a range of sports.
More than a feeling: The role of emotions in learning - Dr Ian Renshaw, Queensland University of Technology
Learning is an inherently emotional experience where an individual must frequently deal with success, failure and
challenges from both physical and psychological perspectives. However, despite the importance of emotions in
shaping thoughts and actions, little consideration has been paid to their impact on individuals in school P.E. settings.
For example, students may experience mixed emotions in lessons, with a cluster of positive and negative emotions
being typical and emergent temporally depending on how performance is progressing. Similarly, little attention has
been paid in considering how the teaching strategies adopted by P.E. teachers impact on the emotions of learners.
In this keynote Ian will discuss some of these issues and show how adopting a constraint-led approach to teaching
can facilitate effective skill learning and the development of positive psychological factors.
Session 1 | 10.30am - 12.00pm
1.1 Here is the Australian Curriculum HPE document, but how do I implement it into my curriculum? – putting
theory into action - Shane Pill, Flinders University & Craig Johncock, St John’s Grammar School (MY, SY)
This interactive workshop involves consideration of the ACHPE Statements and Content Descriptions as more than
a scope and sequence mapping but as an opportunity for student learning in, through and about movement. Design,
enactment and assessment of ACHPE ideas will be developed. The process that the PE Faculty St John’s Grammar
used to review and update their PE program to meet the Australian PE Curriculum requirements will be explained
and attendees will have the opportunity to review their school PE Curriculum. Attendees are asked to bring along PE
curricula/program materials from their school.
1.2 Badminton for Secondary Teachers - Glen Urbani, Rostrevor College (MY, SY)
This session will be a practical session focusing on basic stroke and footwork techniques used in badminton that

to large groups. The session will be run by Dylan Hicks, who is one of the SA’s top sprint coaches, with a masters in
Strength and Conditioning, as well as being the Head of Physical Education at St. Michael’s College. Practical.

local park. Participants take part in a practical demonstration. Practical.

in this area. Don’t be daunted. It is easier than you think! Bring your device if you have one. Practical.
ACHPER (SA) Secondary Conference
Program | Monday 1 December
Session 2 | 12.45pm - 2.15pm
2.1 Sharing to Win: Playing for your team - Dr Ian Renshaw, Queensland University of Technology (MY, SY)
This session will show how using a constraint-led approach to coaching games enables teachers and coaches to
manipulate task constraints to create learning environments that facilitate the development of player’s awareness
with less recourse to verbal input. This games based practical session will enable the participants to take part in a
series of progressive small-sided games where ongoing team success is dependent on each team member’s ability
to share performance knowledge acquired in games with team-mates. The high level of activity interspersed with high
levels of communication between team mates, will demonstrate how the use of a more ‘hands-off’ coaching style can
be used to create a holistic, intrinsically motivating learning experience that results in enhanced game understanding
while at the same time facilitating the enhancement of psychological factors such as positive emotions, thoughts and
actions. Practical.
2.2 Team Handball - Jeff Fischer, Rostrevor College (SY)
The sport of Team Handball is growing in popularity amongst South Australian schools, not just within middle school
programs, but as a year 12 practical option. The sport of Team Handball is a fast, explosive and exciting game that
combines the skills of running, jumping, throwing and catching which allows for the more athletic students to pick up
skills quickly and it also caters for students who may struggle with invasion games. The tactics employed in the sport
of Team Handball are varied, but at stage 2, students are required to demonstrate evidence of being able to employ
the piston movement. This session will introduce the basics of the sport with respect to how the game is played, but
the aim is to give teachers an understanding of how the systems of offence and defence can be taught. Practical.
2.3 Skill Acquisition - Janelle Morrissey, Marryatville High School, SACE Board (SY)
Teaching skill acquisition can be difficult. In order to get the most from your students it is essential that tasks and
lessons are designed in such a way that provides them with opportunities to develop an in-depth understanding of
skill acquisition principles. This session involves advice from experienced teachers regarding how to incorporate skill
acquisition principles into your teaching. Task examples and responses will be provided to help you assess against
performance standards.
