Recognising Academic Practice in teaching and learning
Welcome to the HEA fellowship
application pages
Before you begin your application please read the RAP guide available in hard copy from Nicky Galer
([email protected]), or electronically from the Partners in Learning section of the LTEU
website:
http://www.canterbury.ac.uk/Support/learning-teaching-enhancement-unit/Partners-in-Learning.aspx
Step 1: Please pay particular attention to the sections in the RAP guide on:
a) The taught and non-taught routes to fellowship (p10 RAP guide)
These application pages refer exclusively to those undertaking the non-taught routes
b) The levels of fellowship (p15, RAP guide)
There are four levels of fellowship according to role and experience
c) The UK PSF and the three dimensions of practice (p4, RAP guide)
All applications will need to demonstrate engagement with the three dimensions of practice of the UK
PSF
Step 2: Some tips on narrative style:
1 Combine first and third person writing in a style that you feel comfortable with.
2 Maintain a consistently scholarly approach – referring to relevant pedagogical concepts and ideas as
you write.
3 When describing aspects of your personal and professional development try to identify both the
rationale for the activities, and their impact - particularly on students and colleagues.
4 When describing aspects of your personal and professional development try to maintain a balance
between the celebratory and the critical – don’t be afraid to discuss what hasn’t worked for you, and
how that might be addressed in future.
5 If you don’t think your engagement with the UK PSF is explicit, mark up that engagement in
brackets at the end of each paragraph or section (e.g. A2, K5, V3).
The triangles on the next page may help in putting your application together
Step 3: Please proceed to the relevant application section:
Applying for an Associate Fellowship – pages 3-4
Applying for a Full Fellowship – pages 5-6
Applying for a Senior Fellowship – pages 7-8
Applying for a Principal Fellowship – pages 9-10
N.B. there are several ways in which you might submit your application. You can do it either
electronically from your e-portfolio, or using the Word documents which can be found at www.
canterbury.ac.uk/HEA-fellowship-applications.

RAP
Recognising Academic Practice in teaching and learning
Putting together your application
The main aim of this Framework is to provide a range of opportunities for all staff who teach and/or
support learning to work towards either a Fellowship or teaching qualification in HE. It was agreed at
the Michaelmas Term Academic Board (December 2012).
Before you begin your application please read the RAP guide available in hard copy from Nicky Galer
([email protected]), or electronically from the Partners in Learning section of the LTEU
website.
1 The CPD triangle: As you write consider
the balance between: describing what you did,
the rationale for why you did it, and the impact it
had (on students, colleagues, the institution, etc.).
Try to resist being constantly celebratory – often
things which don’t work can prompt significant
professional development opportunities.
2 The UKPSF triangle: Demonstrate
engagement with the UK PSF as you write, linking
the three dimensions of practice whenever you
can (mark up the links in brackets at the end of
paragraphs or sections).
3 The Stimulus triangle: Consider which
part of the triangle might help you to start writing:
the RAP criteria headings (p19, RAP guide);
elements of the UK PSF; 2-3 significant CPD
activities you have engaged in. Incorporate the
other two corners of the triangle as you review
what you have written.

Application for Associate Fellowship
Check descriptor 1 (p6, RAP guide), and the typical role/career stage before you begin your
application.
Identify TWO areas of activity from the UK PSF on which to focus your application:
A1 Design and plan learning activities and/or programmes of study
A2 Teach and/or support learning
A3 Assess and give feedback to learners
A4 Develop effective learning environments and approaches to student support and guidance
A5 Engage in continuing professional development in subjects/disciplines and their pedagogy,
incorporating research, scholarship and the evaluation of professional practices
Refer to these throughout the sections of your application, relating them to the core knowledge and
professional values components of the UK PSF.
Demonstrate engagement with the three parts of the UK PSF (p5, RAP guide) as you write, and
reference these in brackets at the end of relevant paragraphs.
You may choose to centre your application around 1-2 significant CPD activities or projects, and use
these as critical narrative threads running through sections 1-4.
Your application (excluding your CV and any references) should be in the order of 2,000 words in
total.
You do not need to write the same amount for each section, but sections 1, 2, and 4 should contain
at least 500 words each.
Please check that any web links you refer to are still active at the time of application and reference
them in the normal way.
You might consider joining a learning set to help in the compilation of your evidence – please speak
with your FDLT for advice.
Begin your application on the next page, or copy and paste the headings into your own document, or
access these application pages via pebblepad – speak with your FDLT for advice.
