About Our Studio...
South Valley Creative Dance was started in 2004 by Tami Knubel and, since
2012, continues under the ownership and direction of Nicholas Cendese.
Our studio carries on the dance traditions of Ms. Virginia Tanner and Ms.
Pearl Wagstaff Garff. We strive to nurture the child as an artist using creative movement and contemporary dance based training to encourage each
student to relate, reflect, and respond to the world around them.
Using natural movements such as skipping, twirling, leaping, running, etc.
we explore a variety of concepts that educate the dancer about their body
and their environment. We explore language arts, science, math, rhythm,
and coordination through dance & movement. Our classes incorporate fun,
playful music, colorful props, and stories in a setting that encourages exploration, creative problem solving, and team work.
As students grow older, emphasis is shifted from natural movements to
more concrete modern and contemporary dance training. Working on
clarity of line, core strength, and body articulation, we incorporate ballet
training, stretching, and strengthening exercises into weekly classes.
While the emphasis shifts to a more rigorous training model, we continue
to develop each student as a creative thinker and artist as well as a performer.
Our goal as a studio is to help every student understand the unique and
wonderful ways dance and movement can be a part of their daily life. We
value each child’s unique individuality and encourage its development. We
allow each child to explore and make choices in the moment and encourage creative problem solving over ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers. We strive to
give each student unique tools, ideas, and skills that they can apply
throughout their life and encourage them to always look at the world as
artists, art lovers, and creative thinkers.

Senior Workshop 2014-2015
5 Unique Sessions—Saturdays 1:00-3:00
During fall semester Senior Workshop dancers will come for the Saturday
sessions only—not on Thursdays. During spring semester Senior Workshop
dancers will join regular Company on Thursday evenings. Saturday sessions,
January-June 2015, are extra and must be paid for separately from the
standard tuition rates.
Gaga Exploration (September 6, 13, 20, 27) – after spending the summer
working with Noa Zuk and Ohad Fischof, creators of RDT’s new
commission By The Snake, Nick and dancers will explore gaga movement ideas and
principles to develop unique solos for each dancer.
Choreography Workshop (November 1, 8, 15, 22) – work with Nathan
Shaw, RDT alumnus and dance director at Judge Memorial Catholic High
School, as he creates a brand new piece on the Senior Workshop dancers.
Dancers MUST be at all rehearsals and two rehearsals this month will be 3
hours rather than two. This dance will be performed during Company’s
spring performance.
How NOT to dance to lyrics (January 3, 10, 17, 24, 31) $80 – explore music with lyrics and play around with the different approaches to using music
and text. Taking this class is a prerequisite to using music with lyrics for
company choreography!
Partnering Workshop (March 7, 14, 21, 28) $65 – spend a month working
on partnering skills and choreographic ideas using duets, trios, quartets, and
a whole group. Guest teachers or guest partners (TBA) may join us to incorporate new ideas.
Ausdruckstanz (May—dates subject to change) $65 – part of the
German Expressionist movement, Ausdruckstanz approaches choreography
through a mystical, symbolic, and allegorical language popular in today’s
contemporary dance world. The work of Pina Bausch will be explored and
dancers will have an opportunity to create work that falls into this category
of choreography.
All Senior Workshop participants must pay $100 workshop fee to cover the cost
of the guest choreographer. This is charged in place of the regular company
fee.
General Information
We are NOT a competition dance studio.
All classes for younger dancers are creative
movement based. For older dancers classes begin to
focus on movement technique as well as creativity.
Dancers looking to take only one class per week
(either 60 or 90 minutes) may pick any age
appropriate class except Company.
NEW THIS YEAR! Any 4th or 5th grade dancer
may join Mr. Nick for Pre-Company on Mondays.
This class will focus on the choreographic process,
movement invention, and advanced technique
principles. It is open to any dancer in 4th or 5th
grade. Dancers who wish to participate in PreCompany are required to take the technique class during the week with Ms.
Mary Martha.
Any dancers 6th grade and older are invited to join Creativity In Action, SVCD’s
performing company. Under the direction of Nicholas Cendese, this special
company performs 4-7 times throughout the year and participates in dance
festivals and workshops.
Company members are exposed to guest
choreographers, complex movement ideas, and are encouraged to choreograph
their own works.
Junior High and High School dancers looking to take two classes per week may
choose any age appropriate technique class on a weekday or Saturday. Dancers
who wish to participate in Company are required to take a technique class in
addition to Company class.
Junior High and High School dancers who would like more rigorous training are
encouraged to take three classes per week: 2 technique classes and Company
OR Senior Workshop.
All classes are scheduled on a conditional basis. Classes must have 5 or
more students enrolled to remain on the schedule.
Changes to the schedule will be made by the end of September 2014.
