About Our Speaker
Bigger than T. rex –
Nizar Ibrahim is a
the Hunt for the Largest
vertebrate
paleontologist and
Predatory Dinosaur
comparative
anatomist currently
working at the
University of Chicago.
He is particularly
interested in the
anatomy and
evolutionary history of vertebrates from the
Cretaceous Period in Africa and has carried out
extensive fieldwork in the Sahara Desert. In
2008, Ibrahim and his team unearthed the
largest dinosaur bone ever found in the Kem
Kem region of Morocco. In 2010 they named
and described the largest flying reptile known
from the African continent, the 20-foot
wingspan pterosaur Alanqa saharica. Ibrahim
is currently publishing on various aspects of
the bizarre world of North Africa’s dinosaurs
that he refers to as the ‘river of giants’.
Collectively, these publications will represent
the most complete scientific record of
vertebrate life in the Cretaceous of Africa. In
2014, Ibrahim and his team described a new
skeleton of the largest predatory dinosaur
known: Spinosaurus aegyptiacus. Ibrahim is
also one of the principal curators for the
Phenoscape project, a major National Science
Foundation funded endeavor with the goal of
making anatomical information computer
readable and linking this information to
genetic and developmental data.

7:30 to 8:30 pm – Battlefords Room
Cretaceous Africa was home to one of the most
bizarre dinosaurs known – a creature bigger than
T. rex, armed with long jaws, huge claws, and
sporting 7-foot spines along its back: Spinosaurus.
The first remains of this giant were discovered
in the deserts of Egypt, and put on display in
a museum in Munich, Germany. In 1944 an
Allied air raid destroyed the museum and the
only known partial skeleton of Spinosaurus was
lost – seemingly forever. Almost 100 years later
paleontologist Nizar Ibrahim tracked down a
new skeleton, resurrecting this lost giant of the
Sahara in an incredible story of detective work,
adventure and cutting edge science.
