Science Fair
Wildlife Conservation
On February 7th, the 5th and 6th grade classes
participated in a science fair. Students had to think
of a science experiment, and then fill out an
information packet with a hypothesis, vocabulary
words, research and data collected and a few other
things. We had to take all of our information from
the packet and neatly present it on a tri-fold board.
We could work individually or 2-3 in a group.
Judges, our counselor, Mrs. Brillhart, and a special
ed. teacher, Mrs. Campbell, came around to each
project and asked us a few questions. One
example question that everyone answered was,
“What is the science behind your project?” The
science fair was from 1-2:30 pm in the school gym.
The winners for 5th grade were: 1st-Josh ThomasSolar Oven; 2nd-Dalton Gray, Eli Aldridge, & Eli
Miller-Electric Pickle; and 3rd-Richard Runyon,
Melanie Grimm, & Tyler Miller-Conductors. Sixth
grade winners were: 1st-Maggie Thompson, Jessie
Williams, & Felicity Elam-Shake It Up; 2nd-Zach Lee
& Dakotah Forth-Left or Right; and 3rd-Cameron
Marushi, Grant Kelley, & Zach Francis-Moovin with
Milk. The overall winner was Spencer GibbsStrongest Building Shapes. These students won the
opportunity to compete against students from
other schools in the ACTC Regional Science Fair on
Saturday, February 8th. Spencer Gibbs won 1st
place in the engineering category at ACTC. Good
Job, gang! - Taylor York
On one Friday every month, Kenny Skaggs comes
from the Boyd County Conservation Office and
teaches the 5th grade classes about wildlife
conservation. He teaches us many things like facts
about different animals, gun safety, and preventing
forest fires. He shows us videos, pictures, and slide
shows. At the end of each lesson, to make sure we
paid attention; Mr. Skaggs asks us questions and
gives us prizes for answering correctly. –Taylor York
Civil War Presentation
On the 28th of February, the 5th grade classes
learned about the Civil War. Mr. Shawn Braden,
Civil War re-enactor and CRS custodian, showed his
Civil War collection and shared his knowledge with
the 5th grade students in a presentation in the
library. He had Civil War-era military belts,
uniforms, hats, medals, spoons, canteens, cups,
and much more. He discussed many interesting
facts about how the pieces were made and used
and what life was like during the Civil War. At the
end of his presentation, he allowed the students to
ask questions. There had to be at least fifty or
more questions that they asked. The kids enjoyed
learning about the Civil War and appreciated Mr.
Braden sharing his knowledge with them. -Paige
Kelley & Gabby Talamantez

Mask Making
Tobacco Free Academy
On February 27, Mrs. Hall’s 6th grade class learned
how to make Inca masks. To start, we watched a
video about how to make the masks. The masks
had to look 3-dimensional. The materials we used
were different colors of construction paper, glossy
paper mosaic pieces, clear glue, and a white paper
ready-made mask. First we took the mask and
bent the paper in the center to make the nose.
Next we got pieces of construction paper in colors
that we liked. From that we needed to make the
eyelids, eye shadow, and glue them to the mask.
Then we could make other designs to put on the
mask. Some of the designs were made from the
mosaic pieces or the construction paper. For
example mosaic pieces were glued to the mask to
look like face paint. After we were done with the
face we added hair and beards. Finally we were
finished. They were all unique and very colorful.
On February 21, the Tobacco Free Academy came
to CRS to teach kids why we shouldn’t use tobacco.
They want us to be tobacco free. They had a
PowerPoint that gave a lot of details on tobacco
and why we shouldn’t use it. They had some
displays for us to look at with one showing what a
smoker’s lungs look like compared to a nonsmoker’s lungs. Another one showed what could
happen to the tongue and mouth of a tobacco
user. One display taught us how to read the
warning labels on tobacco products to encourage
us not to use tobacco. Finally there was one that
had different drugs and things that are made from
tobacco. They told us some stories about famous
people who had used tobacco and how it had
affected them. We learned a lot and will hopefully
not use tobacco. –Savannah Rigdon & Caleb Campbell
McTeacher’s Night
-Dakotah Forth & Terrick Smith
Family Game Night
March 6 was McTeacher’s Night at the Ashland
McDonald’s. Many CRS teachers participated by
working the drive-thru window; running cash
registers; packing orders; making drinks; ice cream
cones; and French fries; greeting people who came;
putting tattoos on the kids; or cleaning up. A
percentage of all sales from 5:15 to 8:30 was
donated to CRS. The school earned $479.22 from
sales and $45.93 in tips for a total of $525.15. The
money will go towards one of the many school
activity funds that have the most need.
Has your family ever had a family game night?
Well, CRS had one school wide. It was on February
20 in the evening and hosted by the PTO in the
school gym. They did it because they wanted you
to just spend time with your family, get up out of
the house and play a game to just have a little bit
of fun. They set up some games in the gym like,
the limbo, twister, board games and others.
Parents spent quality time with their kids and kids
got to spend time with their friends. Everyone had
FUN!!! Elizabeth Davis & Gwen Akers

On March 13, Ashland firefighter, Anthony
Cornwell, came to the CRS library to talk about his
job with the 2nd graders. He talked about what he
does and what his life is like as a fireman. He has
to spend the night at the fire station. Guess what?
He has to be able to get all his fire equipment on in
one minute. He said he has to learn a lot like the
kids do. He also told them what to do if they were
in a fire like how to feel if the door is hot or cold
and how to stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch
on fire. Finally he took all the kids outside to show
them the fire truck. They each got to go inside it.
They look excited. It was a really fun way to learn.

Read the Most
Charles Russell students participated in
Renaissance Learning’s annual Read the Most
Coast to Coast Challenge on February 28. The goal
was to beat last year’s record for the number of AR
quizzes taken in one day and they did! Across the
country students completed 4,987,949 quizzes in
one day. Next year’s goal is to reach 5 million.
Good work, kids!

Regional STLP RCX Results
4-H Speeches
The CRS STLP RCX (Robotics) team competed in the
regionals at Morehead State University in
Wetherby Gymnasium on March 22. The team
received 1st place and received a team trophy to
keep and a traveling trophy to return next year.
Charles Russell will be the first name engraved on
the traveling trophy. The team has been practicing
since October at CRS and Verity under the guidance
of Mr. Leistner from Verity and Mrs. Elkins from
CRS. The team had three chances to complete as
many missions as possible within 2 minutes and 30
seconds. Team members who competed are: Caleb
Campbell, Isaac Campbell, and Noah Crites. Other
members are: Eli Campbell, Noah Carey, Luke
Geyer, Melanie Grimm, and Bethany Ledford. The
team advances to the state competition on April 22
at Rupp Arena. Way to go!
The 5th grade recently did their 4-H speeches on
March 21. There were some pretty good ones.
The reasons we do this is because it’s fun and for a
grade. One of the messiest was a kid’s speech on
elephant toothpaste. It literally exploded! One guy
just got covered in it. The speeches took over half
the day to complete but it was worth it. The
winners who received purple ribbons and advance
to the district competition are: Kelsie Click,
Melanie Grimm, Eli Miller, Tyler Miller, Jadyn
Mintz, Mimi Moore, Richard Runyon, Beau Smith,
Josh Thomas, & Willow Triplett. –Melanie Grimm
