Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation increase 5.3%
in September as compared with the same month of 2013
Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation (holiday dwellings, campsites and rural
tourism accommodation) exceeded 10.4 millions in September, that is, 5.3% more than in the
same month of 2013. Overnight stays of resident travellers increased by 7.7% while those of
non-residents did so by 4.0%. The average stay stood at 5.5 overnights per traveller.
During the first nine months of 2014, overnight stays increased by 3.9% as compared with
the same period of the previous year.

Holiday Dwellings
Overnight stays in holiday dwellings increased 0.1% in September. Those of residents
decreased by 1.8% and those of non-residents increased by 0.8%. The average stay
decreased by 6.4%, standing at 6.5 overnight stays per traveller.

In September, 40.9% of the bedplaces available for holiday dwellings were occupied, 1.7%
more than in the same month of 2013. The weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces stood at
43.9%, with an increase of 4.4%.
Non-resident overnight stays in holiday dwellings represented 75.7% of the total. The United
Kingdom was the main country of origin, with more than 2.1 million overnight stays, 0.4%
more than in September 2013. The following country of origin was Germany, with 920,421
overnight stays, that is, a 0.9% increase.

Canarias was the preferred holiday dwelling destination, with more than 2.3 million overnight
stays, 2.1% more than in September 2013. Illes Balears registered the highest occupancy
rate with 78.3% of the dwellings offered.
By tourist areas, the island of Mallorca was the preferred destination, with 919,142 overnight
stays. The island of Lanzarote registered the highest occupancy rate, with 85.0% of the
dwellings offered.
The tourist sites with the greatest number of overnight stays in September were San
Bartolomé de Tirajana, Tías and Arona.

Campsites
The overnight stays in tourist campsites registered an annual increase of 15.6% in
September. Overnight stays of resident travellers increased by 16.8% and those of nonresident travellers did so by 14.3%.
In September, 34.7% of the offered pitches were occupied, that is, 8.8% more. The weekend
occupancy rate by pitch reached 36.6%, with an annual increase of 9.4%.
47.6% of the overnight stays in tourist campsites were by non-residents. Germany was the
main country of origin, with 22.9% of the overnight stays by non-residents, 20.5% more than
in September 2013.

Cataluña was the preferred destination regarding campsites, with over 1.6 million overnight
stays, 20.6% more than in September 2013.
La Rioja was the Autonomous Community with the highest occupancy rate on campsites,
with 60.1% of the pitches offered.
By tourist areas, Costa Daurada was the preferred destination for camping, with 678,305
overnight stays. Costa Blanca reached the highest occupancy rate, with 59.5% of the pitches
offered.
The tourist sites with the highest number of overnight stays were Mont-Roig del Camp,
Benidorm, and Cambrils.

Rural Tourism Accommodation
Overnight stays in rural tourism accommodation presented an annual increase of 17.8% in
September. Residents’ overnight stays increased by 16.0% while those of non-residents did
so by 21.4%.
Regarding rural tourism accommodation, 15.4% of the bedplaces were occupied, that is, a
16.7% increase as compared to September 2013. The weekend occupancy rate stood at
27.7%, with an increase of 14.9%.

Weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces
By Autonomous Community, Illes Balears was the preferred destination, with 117,805
overnight stays, 14.7% more than in September 2013. This community reached the highest
occupancy rate, with 65.8% of the bedplaces offered.
By tourist area, the island of Mallorca was the main destination, with 96,836 overnight stays
and an occupancy rate of 66.8% of the bedplaces offered.

The Holiday Dwelling Price Index (HDPI) increased 5.1%, as compared to September 2013.
The tour operators and travel agencies rate, which carried the greatest weight in the
weighting structure for this month (53.5%), increased by 5.4%.
The Tourist Campsite Price Index (TCPI) decreased by 0.7% in the annual rate. The normal
rate, which had the greatest weight in the weighting structure for September (67.4%),
decreased by 1.6%.
The Rural Tourism Accommodation Price Index (RTAPI) registered a 0.6% increase in
September. The weekend rate, which accounted for 50.4% of the total weight, increased by
1.0%.

Evolution of travellers and overnight stays in all Spanish collective tourist
accommodation
In September, overnight stays in Spanish collective tourist accommodation (hotels1, holiday
dwellings, campsites and rural tourism accommodation) registered a 4.1% increase in its annual
rate. Overnight stays of residents increased by 6.3%, while of non-residents did so by 3.1%.
The average stay decreased 1.4% as compared to the same month of the previous year,
standing at 4.0 overnight stays per traveller.

The main countries of origin in overall regulated tourist accommodation were the United
Kingdom (with 28.6% of the total number of non-resident overnight stays), Germany (25.1%)
and France (7.0%).
Illes Balears was the preferred destination, with more than 10.3 million overnight stays (0.7%
lower that registered in September 2013), followed by Cataluña, with over 8.4 million
overnight stays (3.4% more), and Canarias, with over 7.5 million overnight stays (5.7%
more).
