Major: Marketing (AACSB Accredited). Dissertation: How Different are Tourists as Destinations Evolve? The Role of Psychographics and Needs in Tourism Destination Choice. Chair: Members: Dr. Penny Simpson Dr. Arturo Vásquez-Párraga Dr. Sibin Wu Dr. Mohammadali Zolfagharian Status: Dissertation (Expected Defense: April, 2015) Description: The tourism marketing literature shows that psychological variables are predictors of destination choice for vacations. However, research testing the effects of personality-based psychographic traits on destination choice has yielded weak, inconclusive results. Based on the theory of market choice behavior, this research proposes that tourist´s consumption needs as mediators predict destination choice better than psychographic traits alone, providing more explanation of preferred destinations according to the destination’s degree of development.
