JETS Journal New Year 2014

New Year 2014 Edition
Messenger joins Police
27 year old former Conditional jockey, Craig
Messenger has joined the Metropolitan
police based in Bow Street, London, as a
Communications Officer.
Explains Craig: ”Luckily I had my GCSEs and A
Levels to fall back on and I could demonstrate
the necessary people skills because as a
jockey I was communicating with owners and
trainers all the time and, in my Head Lad roles,
managing all the staff in the yard.
“The application process was tough and JETS
helped me prepare for that. I had two initial
interviews and had to take an IT exam. A pretty
intensive 5 week, pass or fail, induction phase
followed and I am thrilled to say I passed and
am now working full-time.
“My current role is desk-based but I would
love to join the mounted police at some point,”
ends Craig.

Mercer Embarks on
Accountancy Degree
Fahy taking Irish
National Stud Course
31 year old former jump jockey, Keith
Mercer, has embarked on an Accountancy
degree at Teesside University with the help
of a JETS training grant.
27 year old former NH jockey, Donal Fahy
starts a 6 month Diploma course at the Irish
National Stud this January. Donal broke
his neck a few years ago and returned
successfully to the saddle in 2011 to win the
Mongol Derby, helping to raise £10,000 for
the Injured Jockeys Fund, along with Richie
Killoran.
Having struggled to fully recuperate from
a number of race riding injuries over the
past four years, including a broken leg and
a troubling hand injury, Keith approached
JETS to look at his options:
“I realised I was qualified to do nothing. I
had always been a ‘numbers’ person.
It ‘s something I like and am interested in,
so accountancy was an obvious choice.
Adapting to study has been challenging but
I’m happy doing it now,” says Keith.
“The breeding side of the industry is
something I’ve always wanted to learn
more about and the Irish National Stud’s
qualification is prestigious and recognised
worldwide. I am not quite sure where I’ll go
after that but it will be good to have on my
CV and to build for the future,”
explains Donal.
Griffins Richard
Davis Award Reward
early planning
The 2013 Griffins Richard Davis Awards
went to two jockeys who notably both
started planning for their futures alongside
their race riding. Former Jump Jockey
Ollie McPhail, now the Lead Education
Officer for Racing to School took the £3000
Achievement Award and Tom Siddall who
is still race riding, but combining it with his
equine dentistry took the Injured Jockeys
Fund Progress Award. They received their
awards at Cheltenham’s Open Meeting in
November. See inside for full story.
Accolades for video
JETS new video – Take Control of Your
Future – produced by Luke Harvey and
launched on the weekend of the Richard
Davis Awards and featuring a host of former
and current jockeys reflecting on their
careers – has been well received to date.

The 18th year of our annual career development awards in memory o
Richard Davis
“The calibre of the applicants for these awards just gets
stronger and stronger each year. As an employer, I can
really appreciate how employable jockeys are these days,
once they make the transition from race riding and have
gathered additional skills with the help of JETS. They
have what so many of us are looking for: huge initiative,
a competitive instinct and tremendous commitment,”
commented Bob Fidler from sponsors, Berkshirebased Accountants Griffins, and one of the judges.

The applicants highlight some really promising trends which show
that horseracing is one of UK sport’s leaders in the field of career
transition:
•
With JETS training and advice behind them, many candidates
are now thriving in alternative roles within the sport they love.
Over half of this year’s nominees are still working in the sport
or allied trades.
•
Jockeys are planning ahead for their career transitions much
earlier – with the result that many are well settled into their new
careers by their mid to late 30s. Tom Siddall (The IJF Progress
Award) – is a perfect example of early planning, continuing to
ride over jumps, while training and working as an equine dentist
•
Backed up by advice, grants and scholarships from JETS,
jockeys are increasingly undaunted at the prospect of going
into higher education or longer term vocational training,
including accountancy, physiotherapy and teaching.

It was a double celebration for Griffins Achievement
Award winner, Ollie McPhail, with his 37th birthday
falling in the same week as the Richard Davis Awards.
Tom Siddall’s fiancee, Laura, had a busy weekend too,
only just making it to accompany Tom on awards day,
due to her lively hen party the night before.
It turns out that Achievement Award contender, James
Diment, who featured in one of the four JETS ‘shorts’
put together by Channel 4 Racing and broadcast during
racing on the Saturday, lives just over the way from
Richard Davis’s brother, Stephen. Twins, Stephen and
Andy Davis come every year, with Richard’s parents,
Ann and John, to the awards and had only just realised
the connection.

Noel Chance, a guest of Griffins on the day, and
Tom Siddall go back a long way, Tom having ridden
many winners for Noel when he was training, fittingly
including a Cheltenham winner on the Friday of The
Open meeting a few years back.
Noel’s son in law, Richard Johnson, also joined us
later to help Tom and Ollie celebrate their wins
Holly and Aaron Bateman
•
Other Award contenders joining the celebrations were
Aaron Bateman and his partner, Holly (enjoying a rare
relaxing day out away from their twins), Rodi Greene and
Colm Sharkey.

NAME Congratulations to:
•Carrie Ford, Regional Education Officer for BHEST’s Northern
based team, who has been awarded an Honorary Master of Arts
degree by Chester University, in recognition of her outstanding
contribution to British horseracing. Carrie famously rode Forest
Gunner to fifth place in the 2005 Grand National which at the
time was the highest ever place finish by a female rider. Like
Ollie McPhail, since hanging up her boots, Carrie has helped
to introduce around 10,000 school children each year to
horseracing as part of the Racing to School programme.
What would I do next? How can I fit learning new skills
in when I’m so busy race riding? How can I rebuild
my life after injury? Is there life after race riding?
