Report on Standard Citation Forms for Rare Materials Cataloging for Bibliographic Standards Committee (BSC) Meeting ALA Annual 2014 Background The Standard Citation Forms (SCF) Editorial Team has completed revision of the 2nd edition of Standard Citation Forms for Rare Book Cataloging. The revision, Standard Citation Forms for Rare Materials Cataloging, reflects an expanded scope and audience. The format, working principles, arrangement of entries and many of the citation forms have been completely revised. The main goal over the course of our work has been to devise instructions and citation forms that will get a user to a bibliographic record represented by the citation. The new citation form is a name/title proper construction with as few deviations as possible. Names are dropped from the citation form when contained in the title proper; additions are made only when needed to distinguish between otherwise similar citations – primarily, for supplements and later editions. Because each citation is based on the name/title entry for the work cited, relationships between works and later editions or supplements may not be evident. Volunteers from BSC and DCRM-L were asked to perform a close reading of the text (introduction and working principles) and explore the new format, a searchable database, in late 2013. At a public hearing at Midwinter, SCF Team members announced plans for the final revision of the text based on feedback received, provided a demonstration of the database interface, and gave an explanation of the new working principles and instructions for constructing citation forms. Examples, contrasting the second edition with the new edition version of citations, were provided in a handout. Progress since Midwinter • RBMS Web Team members Melissa Hubbard and Kelli Hansen have continued to work with us to refine the database interface and functionality • SCF Team members have finalized the text • BSC members have completed a second close reading of the text • SCF Team members have performed two close readings of the 800+ citation forms • A submission form for new citation proposals has been added to the database • A proposal, Alphabet Soup No More! Revision of Standard Citation Forms, was accepted as part of the Bibliography panel for the 2014 RBMS Preconference in Las Vegas. Marcia Barrett, Valerie Buck, and Emily Epstein will be presenting Action Items requested of BSC • Approve publication of Standard Citation Forms for Rare Materials Cataloging • Approve appointment of a standing SCF Editorial Team Publication Plans Upon approval for publication, the new edition of Standard Citation Forms for Rare Materials Cataloging will be freely available on the RBMS website (address forthcoming).
