Message from the Manager / GoMA Kids Workshops
Maiem,
Seu Ngapa
to Gab Titui
News.
2014 promises to be another
big year for us at Gab Titui,
as we celebrate our 10th
anniversary on 16 April, the
20th anniversary of the Torres
Strait Regional Authority and
continue to work to further
the profile of Torres Strait
Islander and Aboriginal
art, craft and culture.
Preparations are well
underway for our 10th birthday
celebrations, including a call
for entries into our 7th Gab
Titui Indigenous Art Award.
I strongly encourage all Torres
Strait and Aboriginal artists
living locally to take part by
submitting your entry. This
year’s theme is Ailan Legends,
so we look forward to a diverse
range of artworks and styles
expressing mythological,

past and living legends.
We also look forward again
to the opportunity of attending
the Cairns and Darwin Art
Fairs, representing artists
work from the region.
I hope you enjoy this, the
first issue of Gab Titui News
for 2014 where we also
provided a recap on a
few events from late last
year, including children’s
workshops, interstate
exhibitions and our 2013
end of year open day.
We look forward to sharing
all this and more great
work happening here at the
Centre throughout 2014.
GoMA
Kids
Workshops
Over 300 students,
parents and teachers
attended workshops
hosted by Gab Titui,
based on the Queensland
Art Gallery | Gallery
of Modern Art
children’s exhibition
Kangaroo Crew.
Workshops delivered to students
from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
school and Tagai State College late
last year provided children with a
range of hands-on and multimedia
activities based on the narrative
ii.
i.
The Sacred Hill by Aboriginal artist
Gordon Hookey, from the Waanyi
people in the Gulf country.
Kangaroo Crew on Tour explores
Gordon’s narrative, which tells
the story of four kangaroos who
are forced from their home and
must work together to return.
The Sacred Hill can be understood
as a powerful metaphor for
Indigenous people in Australia
and around the world, describing
how even the smallest kangaroo
can find the strength to be
ii.
heard over the loudest voices.
Activities to help students engage
iii.
with the story included drawing,
collage, poster and mask making as
well as an interactive multimedia
arcade style game, Kangarcade.
The Kangaroo Crew workshops are
— Diat Alferink
part of Gab Titui’s public program,
Acting Manager,
which has also recently included
Gab Titui Cultural Centre
elder’s recyclable art workshops
with Acting Arts Development
Officer, artist Emily Beckley.

Six representatives from the art

Moa, Racy Oui-Pitt and Jimmy
Frank David, Retail and Gallery
Assistant, Kailu George, and
Manager, Diat Alferink.
The exhibition opening was a
huge success and just one of the
many ways artists in the region are
working nationally to promote the
art and culture of the Torres Strait.
It was also a valuable opportunity
for development, offering artists
and staff the chance to work
alongside the knowledgeable
Tandanya team in the
installation process.
The Our Stories from Our Place
project was funded and supported
by the Torres Strait Regional
Authority and Tandanya National
Aboriginal Cultural Institute.
