Painting of the Month Nancy Fulton, On the Road to Port Townsend Oil on canvas April 2014 ! Message from the President! ! This week I’ve been reading the autobiography of a contemporary furniture craftsman, Peter Korn. Although I’ve never been particularly interested in woodworking the title of his book, Why We Make Things and Why it Matters, drew me in. ! ! Mr. Korn says that “the primary motive for doing creative work is self transformation.” It might be interesting, while you’re making art this month, to consider his position. ! ! I hope to see you all at out next meeting…slightly transformed if possible.! ! ! ! ! ! ! !! ! ! —Marta! !Membership Report by Harry Langen Most existing membership registration forms are old and are showing outdated information. Harry Langen Creativity is not and never has been ‘sensible’. —Julia Cameron 1 ! Artists United April 2014 April Program — Kristi Galindo Dyson, Mixed Media Collage Kristi Galindo Dyson has been active in the arts most of her life. She graduated from Concordia University in Nebraska, and taught painting and studio courses at the college before moving on to Arizona to do graduate work in painting at the University of Arizona. Kristi has lived in Washington state for the past 30 years and has been actively involved in both the Northwest Watercolor Society and Women Painters of Washington. She has served as president for both organizations. Kristi's work can be viewed regularly at the Women Painters of Washington Gallery in Seattle and on the WPW website: www.womenpainters.com. She will also have a show in May at the Northwind Arts Center in Port Townsend, WA: northwindarts.org. “For the past ten or more years I have been working experimentally in mixed media and collage. All my work over that period has been non-objective. I enjoy the creative process as a journey of discovery. I try to push myself beyond what I know, always looking for fresh forms of expressions. In my painting demonstration, I’ll be talking about the creative process as I experience it. “ ! ! K. Galindo Dyson, Encounters The March Program! was a group activity: members making portraits. Working together at Bridge Park Center, the small group enjoyed beverages and cookies provided by the Center. Members used a variety of methods, from drawing with pencils in sketchbooks, to crayons, to collages, making portraits. Fun, laughter, and popcorn were shared by all! One of the more successful attempts was Don Zimmerman’s “Portrait of Phyllis” (above).! www.artistsunitedclub.com! It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult. ! ! ! ! ! —Seneca Art History Moment! ! While we generally associate the Dutch Golden Age (17th century) with famous painters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Franz Hals, there were countless others who earned their place in the art history of that time. Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was the most famous entomologist of her era. Born into an artistic family in Germany, she was a child more interested in insects and flowers than in people. As early as age thirteen she was collecting caterpillars, butterflies, and other insects, and drawing and painting scientifically accurate renderings.! ! Although Maria was married at eighteen, the marriage didn’t last, and she divorced and took her daughters to live with her in Amsterdam. At age twenty-eight, her first book Neues Blumenbuch (1680) was published to instant success. she was the first naturalist to observe and record the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly. Amazingly for her time, she traveled to Surinam (then, the Dutch West Indies), and subsequently produced a masterpiece: Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (1700). Shortly before Maria died, a collection of her works was bought by Peter the great, and remains in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg to this day. An accomplished artist, and an intrepid naturalist, Maria was a woman who did what she wanted throughout her life. www.artistsunitedclub.com! 3 Artists United April 2014 Artists United — Burien Arts Gallery Sing and Sketch March Artists Marta Creswell, Janet Price, Liz Simpson April Artists Joanne Benson, Jennifer Martin, Janie Sevela !
