Bus Stop:
Natural Gas
UGI continues to expand its “fuel-print” in providing
service for compressed natural gas (CNG) stations –
primarily used by commercial vehicles – throughout
its northern, eastern and central Pennsylvania
service territories.
Recently, CNG from UGI gas service facilities began
serving two fast-fill stations at River Valley Transit (RVT)
in Williamsport. The RVT fleet includes four dedicated
natural-gas powered passenger buses. Dedicated
vehicles operate solely on natural gas; fast-fill pumps
complete fueling in 5 minutes or less.
The second station is open 24/7 to the public and
currently serves vehicles of 12 Williamsport-area
commercial customers through a credit card scanning
payment system. RVT is the mass-transit carrier for the
Greater Williamsport Area and most of Lycoming County.
In partnership with UGI, RVT is steadily growing its
commitment to natural gas. “We are pleased to be
working together and are happy with our progress,’’
said Bill Nichols, General Manager.

and Dennis Hahn, Fleet Manager. Rohrer headed UGI
involvement in the CNG station project.
Kevin Kilpatrick, Planning Manager, said RVT plans to
convert their entire 29-bus fleet to CNG within 10 years.
He cited fuel cost savings of nearly half with CNG
($1.99 Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) over diesel fuel at
an average of $3.65 per gallon. Kilpatrick also noted
the clean-burning properties of natural gas. “When
we change the engine oil, it is crystal clear,’’ he said.
“We expect this to add to the lifespan of our buses,
which is about 12 years with diesel fuel.’’
Genetti Hotel and Suites, a public customer, is reaping
similar cost benefits with CNG for their dedicated
van that shuttles guests between the hotel and
Williamsport Regional Airport.
Marc Schefski, General
Manager, estimated fuel
savings of approximately
$1,300 per year.

Demand for Natural Gas Service Remains High
UGI Adds Record Number of New Customers in 2013
Last year, 15,003 homeowners added natural gas service throughout the UGI service
territories. This includes service for both newly constructed homes and homeowners
who converted to natural gas from other fuels or upgraded their service to add
natural gas for heating.
In addition, UGI added 1,888 commercial businesses
(both newly constructed facilities and those which were
converted to natural gas or upgraded service to add
natural gas for heating). That brought the total number
of new customers in 2013 to 16,891, eclipsing the 2012
record number by approximately 500.
Because natural gas prices have sharply decreased over the
past five years, customers who choose natural gas are saving
significant amounts of money on their fuel service.
