LACCF 2014 Side Events Program Day 2: Thursday 4 September Time & Room 10:45-11:45 Salon 2-3, Floor 2 Side Event Session Details Organised by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) / Organizado por el Ministerio Federal Alemán de Medio Ambiente, Conservación de la Naturaleza, Construcción y Seguridad Nuclear (BMUB) Urban NAMAs and Carbon Market Mechanisms in Latin America Urban areas significantly contribute to global greenhouse gas emissions. Soaring urbanisation rates still increase the burden of cities on the global climate. To combat rising emissions, many developing countries apply NAMAs. With this instrument, emissions in a particular sector shall be brought below a certain baseline. The relatively new concept of Urban NAMAs goes a step further. Urban NAMAs combine emission reductions in several sectors, e.g. the building, transport or waste sector, to an integrated action at the urban level. Several countries in Latin America, among them Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica, are developing such Urban NAMAs. During the Side-Event, experts from the respective countries will present experiences with Urban NAMAs, share best practices and discuss lessons learnt. Belize, Dominican Republic, and Ecuador DNAs (Designated National Authorities) will share with the audience their work on SBL for power, waste and transport sectors, respectively. Additionally, UNEP DTU and UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Centres (RCCs) of Bogotá and St. George's will provide an overview on how they have supported this work as well as on their other areas of work in the region. Finally, this side event provides an excellent opportunity for discussing the lessons learned on SBL and international cooperation among DNAs, UNEP DTU and UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Centres – St. George’s and Bogota. Findings of an ongoing BMUB research project in this context will serve as the basis for a discussion on the practicability of introducing future mechanisms based on the CDM. Experts and representatives from developing countries will share their experiences and views, while the audience is invited to participate in the discussion.
