Urban NAMAs and Carbon Market Mechanisms in Latin America
Urban areas significantly contribute to global greenhouse gas emissions.
Soaring urbanisation rates still increase the burden of cities on the global
climate. To combat rising emissions, many developing countries apply
NAMAs. With this instrument, emissions in a particular sector shall be
brought below a certain baseline. The relatively new concept of Urban
NAMAs goes a step further. Urban NAMAs combine emission reductions in
several sectors, e.g. the building, transport or waste sector, to an integrated
action at the urban level. Several countries in Latin America, among them
Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica, are developing such Urban NAMAs.
During the Side-Event, experts from the respective countries will present
experiences with Urban NAMAs, share best practices and discuss lessons
learnt.

Standardized Baselines and International Cooperation in the Region
The side event showcases initial experiences on developing standardized
baselines (SBL) in Latin America and the Caribbean. Belize, Dominican
Republic, and Ecuador DNAs (Designated National Authorities) will share
with the audience their work on SBL for power, waste and transport sectors,
respectively. Additionally, UNEP DTU and UNFCCC Regional Collaboration
Centres (RCCs) of Bogotá and St. George's will provide an overview on how
they have supported this work as well as on their other areas of work in the
region. Finally, this side event provides an excellent opportunity for
discussing the lessons learned on SBL and international cooperation among
DNAs, UNEP DTU and UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Centres – St.
George’s and Bogota.

BIOREDD+: A Landscape Approach to Forest Conservation, Emission
Reductions and Improved Livelihoods in the Pacific
BIOREDD+ is a US$ 31 million USAID program designed to strengthen
Colombian capacity to mitigate and adapt to climate change, protect
biodiversity and induce sustainable development of poor local communities.
The side event will present the comprehensive approach and activities that
BIOREDD+ is undertaking to prevent selective logging and more aggressive
land use change through: strengthening of environmental and social
governance, improvement of livelihoods and social conditions, and adoption
of profitable productive activities to generate alternative, forest friendly,
sources of income.

Practicability of Transitioning From CDM Towards Future Climate Policy
Instruments
While there is a broad theoretical discussion on the future of climate policy
instruments, at this event we want to discuss the practical opportunities and
challenges of transitioning from CDM activities towards new mechanisms.
Findings of an ongoing BMUB research project in this context will serve as
the basis for a discussion on the practicability of introducing future
mechanisms based on the CDM. Experts and representatives from
developing countries will share their experiences and views, while the
audience is invited to participate in the discussion. A summary of the project
results is available at: www.jiko-bmub.de.
