DIABETES
YOUTH
FAMILIES
A World of Education,
Inspiration and Support
WWW.DYF.ORG
Welcome!
DYF is pleased to be entering its 78th year of changing the way children, teens and families live with diabetes.
Today, the breadth of DYF education, empowerment and support— offered throughout the year—encompasses:
•Family-based activities such as Family Camps and Weekend Retreats
•Age-based residential camps for children and teens
•Extreme outdoor adventures like our Mt. Whitney Trip (14,505 ft.)
•Community-centered DYF DAY events
•Educational Symposiums with the greater T1D community
•Reunion at BMC and an Alumni Association to support past participants
We are committed to ensuring broad access to these programs and resources. It’s also important that
we have the means to maintain our high quality level of support, for a growing number of participants.
Therefore, DYF offers tiered Program pricing: those who are in a position to do so are encouraged to
pay the Actual Fee of the program; if unable, a subsidized Partial Fee is available to all registrants; and
finally, our Scholarship Program enables those with financial hardships to pay as little as the
deposit to attend any program.
DYF’s ultimate goal is to help our participants attain the courage, competence and confidence to live
well with type 1 diabetes while they also develop a community of peers (with or without diabetes) who will
support one another over long and happy lifetimes.
We are optimistic that you will find something within these pages that will help in the day-to-day
management of diabetes, in 2015 and beyond.
DYF is a not-for-profit organization that relies upon the generous donations of individuals and corporations to make our
Scholarship Program and Partial Fees possible.
Special thanks to Tara Layman Photography and Collin Krauthamer for helping to capture the essence of camp.
“
First, there is respite for us all. When [our son] comes home, we pick his brain because we want to
understand how he is feeling. It helps us to consider new ideas and ways of dealing with the things
we do day in and out. Plus, seeing his smile and knowing how much it meant to him is the prize!
Your child must go. It is the best thing you can do for your child and for your family.”

dyf overview
Program Philosophy
At DYF, we aim to provide children, teens and families
the ready encouragement and ongoing education that
living well with type 1 diabetes requires. We offer a
variety of programs to help ensure that you will find an
exceptional way to enhance your unique journey with
diabetes.
Medical Leadership
DYF is committed to incorporating the leading edge
of diabetes management and knowledge into our
programs. Our healthcare professional teams come
from distinguished medical centers such as UCSF
Benioff Children’s Hospital, Lucile Packard Children’s
Hospital at Stanford, Kaiser Permanente, and more.
Our curriculum of ever evolving topics and approaches
are not only medically sound, but delivered by those
who understand the day-to-day realities of living
with T1D.
Skilled Staff & Volunteers
While a fun environment is important, safety and
diabetes management is always top priority. Our
staff members undergo a careful screening process,
followed by training in topics ranging from diabetes
care and emergency procedures to ages and stages
of child development, group dynamics and much
more. The vast majority of staff and volunteers have
diabetes or have a close friend or loved one with
diabetes. All are committed to helping participants
learn to live well with diabetes.
“
Camp is a little piece of heaven. You meet
amazing families and you know your child is
in good hands with the staff. Everyone there
is so sweet and the community is amazing.
Send your kids to camp!!!
I think this is such a wonderful program. It is
the one time these kids don’t feel different from
everyone else...the one time these kids can be
kids!!!!!”

“
It helps your child deal with their diabetes lives
in a big, big way. I tell my son that he’s going
to spend time with ‘his people.’ He loves it. He
loves that almost everyone in the entire camp
has diabetes, too. There is normalcy for them
and on top of that, it is sooo much fun. The
bonus is that as parents, we have people caring
for our child probably better than we do and we
get 5 days off to rejuvenate. That’s important for
parents, too.”

1.If able, families are encouraged to pay the Actual Fee of the program.* (As determined by DYF’s externally audited
annual financial statements)
2.A Partial Fee is an option for all registrants. The majority of families select this tier.
3.The Scholarship Program enables those with financial hardships to pay whatever they can afford.* (Eligibility
and details can be found on page 8)
If you select the Partial Fee or Scholarship Program, we strongly encourage you to participate in a fundraising campaign.
Details are on page 10.
*Payment Plans are available through December for all tiers. Delinquent accounts are subject to collections.
