S-1 INSIDE THE MIND OF JIHAD: The Religious and Psychological
Foundations of Islamic Extremism
Islamic radicalism presents the most formidable challenge to western
values and security since the fall of communism, and it is imperative that
Americans grapple with an understanding of its roots and its deadly appeal
to countless thousands of Muslims.
Part One: What are some of the fundamental differences between "Islam,"
and "Islamism" which can lead to the horrors of ISIS and Al Queda?
Part Two: Inside the Mind of Jihad: How does ISIS, for example, justify
unspeakable atrocities in religious terms?
Part Three: The religious and intellectual founders of Islamic radicalism: A
look at the writings of Hassan Al-Banna, Sayed Qutb, Sayyed Abu'l A'la
Mawdudi, and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
Dr. Lowenthal received his B.A and M.A in English Literature at
Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and his Ph.D in English from
New York University. Retired as the Executive Director of the American
Jewish Committee, Dr. Lowenthal is currently an Adjunct Professor at
Northeastern University.
Drafted into the Israeli Army after the Yom Kippur War, Dr. Lowenthal went
through basic training on the West Bank and anti-aircraft gunnery training

night time guard duty in Sharm el Sheik at the tip of the Sinai Desert.

S-6 ROUGH, TOUGH AND UNORTHODOX:
THE JEWISH GANGSTER IN AMERICA
No group provided more shame to Jewish Americans than headlinegrabbing gangsters such “Bugsy” Siegel, “Dutch” Schultz, the Purple Gang.
At a time when Jews faced discrimination in employment, Jewish gangsters
came out of the crowded immigrant ghettoes of America’s largest cities.
These few turned to crime as a way to succeed in America. Many began
their careers as juvenile delinquents. They were not exemplary citizens but
when Israel was fighting for independence in the 1940s, they were
powerful defenders of the Jewish people. Their time of infamy did not last
long and their children never followed them into lives of crime. As Meyer
Lansky is purported to have said – and as repeated in The Godfather, Part II
“We are larger than U.S. Steel!”

new resources to live with spirit, resilience and wisdom. It is based on a
curriculum developed by Rabbi Rachel Cowan and Linda Thal, EdD, for
the Institute for Jewish Spirituality.
These three sessions will deal with topics such as exploring this stage of
life, a life review, and revitalizing and nourishing healthy relationships.

supportive environment of confidentiality and trust. Register early to
assure your participation.
Dates: Mondays, April 6, 13, 20, 2015

LUNCH AND LEARN SERIES:
S-9 WHAT IS FAITH
Faith is one of those words which have come to mean so many things
over the centuries that it is hard to come to clarity about the meaning of
this word. We will be studying the first usage of the word in Torah
and it's usage in several other early passages in Torah to
better understand what faith might have originally meant in our
tradition and to better understand faith in our own lives today.

TIME: 12:00 – 1:30pm
INSTRUCTOR: Rabbi Alan Ullman
FEE: Temple Israel Members: $36; non-members: $54.
