Introduction
How it all Started
In 1994 with the Chinchilla community suffering from long term drought it was realized that
the spirit of the stricken district needed a boost of confidence with a small band of
dedicated volunteers forming a committee to promote Chinchilla's dominant contribution
to the Australian Melon Industry. The first festival attracted about 2500 visitors to the town
and surrounding areas. Approximately 10,000 visitors attended the last festival in 2013, a
massive increase in numbers.
The townspeople of Chinchilla have built an impressive festival through sheer hard yakka,
and that's the reason why it appeals to so many national and international travellers. The
Melon Festival Committee (who are all volunteers) work hard to make each festival fun and
exciting.
The committee and the Chinchilla District look forward to your participation.
The 2015 Festival is the 12th festival to be held and is promising to be the biggest and best
yet!

Message from RAY BROWN
From Thursday 12 to Sunday 15 February, Chinchilla will become a hub of activity and excitement as
thousands of people from throughout the region, State, interstate and abroad come together to
celebrate the best our region has to offer at the iconic Chinchilla Melon Festival.
Chinchilla is renowned for being the 'Melon Capital' of Australia, and the Chinchilla locals and finest
melon growers in Australia, and for pulling out all 'stocks' to celebrate the 'Festival of the Melon' over
three days in February every two years.
With over 20 events highlighting not only our primary production, but also our community spirit, locals
and visitors alike will be treated to an array of hands-on messy fun activities which offer Melon Festival
goers a unique and quirky way to experience, explore and enjoy our Western Downs.
This vibrant and distinctive Festival has become a 'world renowned' event for Chinchilla and district,
and is a wonderful advertisement for our region, bringing all our communities together to celebrate and
showcase what makes our region great.
For those visiting our region, I hope you have a memorable stay and I am sure it will be something you
and your family will be able to reflect on in years to come as you fondly remember the time spent at
the Festival.
A tremendous amount of work and planning goes into organising such a large Festival, and I would
like to congratulate the Chinchilla community for hosting such a wonderful event, and offer a special
thanks to all the community members and event organisers who have worked alongside our melon
growers to yet again stage an extremely remarkable Festival.
On behalf of Western Downs Regional Council, I invite you to come along and enjoy all the fun and
excitement of the Chinchilla Melon Festival.
There is no better place to be than in Chinchilla over the next three days.
See you there!
Cr Ray Brown
Western Downs Regional Council Mayor

Message from QGC
QGC is proud to once again be a major supporter of the Chinchilla MelonFestival in 2015. We
recognise the significant contributions the festival makes to Chinchilla and the Western Downs region
and appreciate the chance to participate in what has become an iconic Queensland event.
We look forward to sharing in festival celebrations as a way of acknowledging the fantastic support
that the Western Downs region has shown QGC.
QGC staff are pleased to be volunteering again in the renowned Melon Games Arena, so come by and
say hello. We'll be keen to help out, give you directions or just hear how you are enjoying the day.
We are sure this year's festival will once again be a huge success and showcase what makes
Chinchilla such a great place to live.
From the whole team at QGC.
