Railroad Safety Improvements
Main Concern: $$$
Cost of new curbs from medians
and curb extensions
Why not just narrow the road?
•
The original proposal was to
work with existing curb lines
•
The addition of the median,
while desirable, required, a
lot of new curb
•
The idea of just creating a
narrower road and skipping
the median was floated
– Would require about the
same amount of new
curb as the median
– Result in less
impermeable surface
– Have a lower lifetime
maintenance cost
(plowing, resurfacing,
etc.)
Moving the curblines in also allows for a wider
planting buffer between the sidewalk and the
road
