Due to the increased number of Link Leisure Times’ participants and
programs, the Leisure Department staff is not always available during
office hours. We will respond to questions and concerns as quickly
as possible.

General Information
GENERAL INFORMATION
Registration Forms
All forms must be completed on both sides prior to participation. Incomplete forms
will be returned. Pre-registration is required for all Link Leisure activities.
*ON SITE REGISTRATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!!*
Information collected from registration forms is used to enhance individual
program needs, ensure expedient medical attention if required, and demonstrate
merits of leisure programming to funding sources. Please be sure to complete both
the front and back of the registration form. Incomplete forms will be returned to
sender to be completed before processing.
Spinners, Club Travel, Community Art Connection
Registrations for these activities will be accepted according to individual needs
in the following priority on a first come/first served basis:
1. Individuals living alone, with parents or independent of scheduled support
2. Individuals with 2-30 hours per week of SCL support.
3. Individuals with 31-90 hours per week of SCL support.*
4. Individuals with 91-148 hours per week of SCL support.*
*Support verification may be required
Consent and Waiver Forms
EVERYONE registering for activities must complete these forms. All consent and
waiver forms received during this brochure period will be good through December
31, 2015. Registrants will be ineligible for participation without these forms on file.
Confirmation for Participation
Activity Confirmation Invoices will be sent to you once your registration is
processed. The invoice includes the total amount of payment for activities, payable
to Link Leisure Services. (This includes late payments from prior brochures.)
PAYMENTS ARE DUE JANUARY 30TH, 2015
Waiting Lists
Waiting lists will be established for each activity. You will not be responsible
for payment of activities that you are on the waiting list for until you receive
confirmation for participation.
Staffing Assistance
If 3 or more individuals from the same residence are attending an activity,
accompanying staff must remain at the activity site. Staff is also required for any
participant requiring special assistance and/or one-on-one support. If staff will be
accompanying a participant to a ticketed event the staff must pay the fee by the
deadline.

Program Times
We ask that you please adhere to times posted for activities. Activities are often scheduled back to back and we are unable to provide supervision prior to or after an activity.
For the safety of your child or consumer, PLEASE DO NOT drop off any earlier than 5
minutes prior to an activity and pick up promptly at the scheduled conclusion. Please
make sure transportation is arranged prior to the activity. Telephones may not be
available at each activity.
Program Fees
Program registration fees vary for each program. Individuals will be charged for each
activity or program that they are registered and confirmed for, according to the registration fees indicated in the Leisure Times brochure. Send no money with your
registration, you will be billed! Payment schedules may be arranged on an individual basis by contacting the Link Leisure Department. If staff will be accompanying a
participant to a ticketed event the staff must pay by the following date.
PAYMENTS ARE DUE JANUARY 30TH, 2015
Transportation
Individuals who register for Spinners, Club Travel and or Special Events and who receive 0-30 hours of SCL support, live alone or have no means of transportation, except
mass transit, are eligible for transportation. Contact the Leisure Department at 2628888 when you receive your confirmation letter to request transportation. Transportation services are limited and available on a first come first served basis. The cost for
transportation is $8 round trip or $5 one-way. Once transportation is confirmed you
are responsible for payment unless proper cancellation notice is given. In the event an
unconfirmed/unscheduled ride is provided for take home, you will be billed $25.00 for
the service.
Cancellation Policy
If a participant is unable to attend any program activity, they must contact the Leisure
Department at 262-8888 no later than NOON THE BUSINESS DAY PRIOR to the
activity. If proper notice is not received, the participant risks losing all pre-paid fees for
the activity. Failure to give proper notice of cancellations 2 times in the same brochure
period will result in removal of the individual’s name from all scheduled activities in
that brochure period. Registration fees in this situation are non-refundable! We do not
receive messages left on the Leisure Hotline; you must dial a direct extension.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteer opportunities are identified throughout the brochure. No matter what your
special talents, interests and schedules are, you can help change someone’s life at Link.

REGISTRATION PROCESSING BEGINS: DECEMBER 5TH, 2014!
Helping Hands Volunteer Program
Volunteering helps the world go round – at least for non-profit and communitybased programs and agencies! It is, however, hard to know where to start. That’s
where we come in! In this volunteer program, we will do a project and deliver
the project to the designated agency or program. Upon delivery, we will get a
short tour and discussion about other volunteer opportunities within that agency or
program. In this brochure we will:
•Make greeting cards (birthday, Valentine’s Day, just because) to give to seniors at
Arbor Springs
• Fill toiletry bags and deliver to Central Iowa Shelters and Services for homeless
men and women
By volunteering a small amount of your personal time and energy, you can help
make a difference in someone else’s life, as well as in your community!

Enrich Your Mind
Our lives are busy and hectic, often leaving us with little time to relax and
recuperate. Sometimes we feel cranky, down, and tired. Take some time to
rejuvenate your mind in this exciting new program! We will explore some different
techniques related to relaxation and coping – journaling, anger management,
pet therapy, and meditation and mantras. You will leave feeling free, open, and
happy!

Chatter Box Jenga
We are not talking about the table version… Let’s play a life-size game of Jenga!
And let’s start from scratch! On night one of this two-part, super fun program, we
are going to sand and stain our very own extra-large Jenga blocks – don’t forget
to wear an old t-shirt and pants; we will also come up with some questions and
phrases to write on the Jenga blocks, making the game a great conversation as
well! Night two will be the big game… We will see who has an unstoppable
strategy, all while learning more about our friends and peers. How exciting!

Candyland Annual Spring Fling Dinner & Dance
*Note new location, See below*
Come dance through Candyland at our 11th Annual Spring Fling Dinner and
Dance! We will take you on a delectable adventure of the Kingdom of Sweets,
complete with the Gumdrop Mountains and Lollipop Woods. Enjoy a delightful
dinner of tossed salad, Italian potatoes, glazed carrots, roast beef, rolls, and
yummy dessert bars, catered by the terrific Master Grillers. Do the candycane twist
with your sugarplum as DJ Erick Sims plays music especially for the Candy Castle!
•Remember that while this is a night of fun with friends, it is still a formal
event. Shirt and tie are required for all men and dresses or a suit are
required for women. We encourage staff to dress accordingly as well.
•You must be registered to attend this event by April 8th.
•Registrations will not be taken at the door!
•Any staff attending that would like a meal will need to notify the Leisure
Department by April 8th and also pay for their meal

RIVER CITY SPINNERS
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: A social group for adults with mild intellectual and/or
physical disabilities, who may be socially isolated within our community.
Participants must exhibit good social behavior, have no major medical
concerns, and display appropriate behavior toward property, themselves, and
others. Social activities are scheduled three to four times per month. (Participants
requiring medication during the event, must bring only necessary dosage and
it must be labeled with medication name, dosage, and directions.) Staff to
participant ratio is 1:6 or 1:7. Ratios of 1:1 or 1:2 are not available.
Please note the meeting place for each activity.
Limited to 12 people per activity unless otherwise specified.

Friday, January 9th: Guys’ Night at the Boat & Outdoor Show
Calling all outdoor enthusiasts! Come with us to the Iowa State Fairgrounds to
check out this year’s Boat & Outdoor Show! For the boaters, there will be more
than a dozen different brands of boats on display, ranging from pontoons to
speedboats to fishing boats. There will be exhibits for the fishers, for the hunters,
and for the outfitters. What a great distraction from the harsh winter blues!

Wednesday, January 14th: Drake Diner
The Drake Diner has been a Des Moines landmark since it opened in 1987. It
features an upscale 50’s diner ambience with one of the friendliest staffs around.
The Diner serves breakfast all day and is also well known for their burgers,
meatloaf, and fresh salads. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy delicious food and
a great time with friends!

The Iowa Wild are up against the Rockford Ice Hogs in this exciting hockey game.
Help us cheer our team on as they skate across the ice, passing and protecting the
puck to make the winning goal! This is definitely a can’t-miss for the season!

Friday, January 30th: The Miracle Worker
Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, Helen Keller is violent

dark, tortured silence. Annie’s success with Helen finally comes with the utterance

There is a new, fun craft at Glazed Expressions – candle making! Pick a scent,
a size, and a style for your very own candle. Then, add embellishments to
personalize it. The possibilities are endless! Keep your candle as a perfect
addition to your home or give it to someone special in your life. Light up your
creativity making candles as unique as you! For your information, candle prices
range from $8-$39, and embellishments range from $0.25-$8 each.

*Swoosh *Swoosh *Swoosh! Do you know what that sound is? IT’S YOU learning
to ice skate! The Ice Ridge is hosting a learn to skate night just for YOU! Learn to ice
skate in a safe, warm indoor facility at The Ice Ridge at South Ridge Mall- West End
Shops. Skating will be learned on a synthetic ice surface that is ideal for beginners.

Tacopocalypse, where Mexican food meets an Asian influence, combined with an

options at this unique East Village restaurant! While it may take a minute to decide

Bass Pro Shops, located in Altoona, is every outdoorsman or woman’s paradise!
They have a wide variety of sports equipment, fishing gear, clothing and a very
unique display of taxidermy animals! They also have a large fish tank display with
some of Iowa’s own native fish! Join us as we head to Bass Pro Shop for a guided
tour! After our tour we will head over to Uncle Bucks for a one-of-a kind bowling
experience that makes you feel like you are under the ocean! Please note we will
not be eating dinner at Uncle Bucks, but only bowling.

we head to the Civic Center to see a live Broadway performance of The Lion King.
Marvel at the breathtaking spectacle of animals brought to life! You’ll never forget
the thrilling, pulsating rhythms of the African Pridelands. Don’t miss this amazing
experience!

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: A program designed for adults with mild intellectual
disabilities and/or physical disabilities who may be socially isolated within our
community, and want to travel one weekend day each month to a new destination in
Iowa and the Midwest. Travelers must exhibit good social behavior, have no major
medical concerns, and display appropriate behavior toward property, themselves
and others. There are a variety of trips planned, so choose the one or all that
appeals to you and make your reservation now!
We will meet and depart from, and arrive back at Link Associates – 1452 29th St.
Limited to 12 people per activity unless otherwise noted.

Saturday, January 17th: The Omaha Durham Museum
Durham Museum located in downtown Omaha, Nebraska, opened its doors as a
Union Pacific station in January of 1931! The station was one of the busiest in the
nation with10,000 passengers utilizing it every day! Now the station has been
transformed into the Durham Museum. This remarkable building houses some of
Omaha’s most unique treasures and provides a captivating look at the history of the
region. Here you can find many exhibits, varying from history to science, and culture
to industry. Come and explore this unique museum and all the beauty that it offers!

Saturday, February 21st: Kansas City Sea Life Aquarium
Sharks and crabs and piranhas, oh my! These are just a few of the creatures you
will get to see on this deep-sea exploration. Sea Life Aquarium in Kansas City will
transport you into the amazing underwater world. Come nose to nose with sharks
and prepare for astonishingly close views of everything from humble starfish and
seahorses to graceful rays. To get any closer, you’d have to get wet!

Saturday, March 28th: Owatonna Cabela’s and Reptile Zoo
Minnesota is our destination for this trip! Enjoy a leisurely peruse through Cabela’s
– the World’s Foremost Outfitter of hunting, fishing, and outdoor gear. While there,
fancy a look at the extraordinary taxidermy and life-like re-creations of animals
in their natural habitats. The huge tanks of native fish will keep you mesmerized,
watching the gar, crappie, and walleye swim by. Feel free to purchase some gear
or fudge before heading to the Reptile Zoo! One of the world’s largest reptile
displays, you will get to marvel at amazing creatures of the reptile and amphibian
world. Among these are snakes, turtles, lizards, crocodilians, toads, frogs, and
salamanders. You will return to Des Moines feeling educated and fulfilled!

The weather is getting warmer and it’s time to start shopping for those hot new
summer trends! Come to Williamsburg, IA, with us to visit the Tanger Outlet Mall
and shop for clothes, shoes, accessories, and more. There are plenty of stores for
both men and women to find things they want. And don’t forget about the delicious
food! We will be eating lunch and then everyone can satisfy their sweet tooth at the
Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory!

CONNETION
PROGRAM DECRIPTION: Community Art Connection (CAC) is a program designed
to introduce participants to a variety of leisure time alternatives. Speakers are
scheduled to present information and/or a hands-on experience for the topic they
are addressing. Come view, listen to, and experience a new leisure option.

Monday, January 5th: Holiday Wreaths
‘Tis the Holiday Season! Decorate your front door for your favorite upcoming
holiday with a festive wreath! Choose from Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day,
Easter, or any others you can think of. Your neighbors will surely be jealous and
might ask you to help them make one of their own!

Monday, January 19th: We’ve Got the World in Our Hands
Pottery and clay can be very therapeutic, in addition to allowing you to create a
wonderful, one-of-a-kind piece of art to display in your home or office! Join Dave
Spencer in a demonstration of throwing pots on the wheel; we will all work together
to create a pot to display in the Leisure Area for others to enjoy as well! You will
also be taking home your very own piece of art in the form of a clay tile!

It’s incredible to watch an ordinary piece of paper transforming into a design.
That’s what we will be doing in this activity, as we learn fun and creative designs
to do with paper. We will be doing a variety of fun designs that anyone can do!
Come learn something new or maybe jumpstart a new hobby!!

FUN & FITNESS
REGISTRATION PROCESSING BEGINS: DECEMBER 5 TH , 2014!
Weight Lifting
Were changing locations!! After many years of going to the Riverfront YMCA, we
will now be going to the NEW Wellmark YMCA! On Monday and Wednesday
afternoons we will work on strength, coordination, flexibility, and cardiovascular
endurance. Each session will have three parts: walking on the track for warm-up,
lifting weights with machines and free weights, and doing cardio with treadmills,
stationary bikes, and ellipticals. This is a fun way to get in shape and stay fit.
We will begin Monday, January 5th and continue through Monday, April 20th
We will also have a Friday afternoon session for those who wish to train for the
Special Olympics Power Lifting competition at the Mid-Winter Games in Iowa City
on March14th. Those who choose to participate must register for this activity.
Athletes must decide if they want to compete in power lifting or basketball, as they
are not able to do both. Athletes must use a properly fitting weight belt. If you
know of anyone interested in helping participants train for the competition please
let us know!

Critter Camp
Link Leisure is fostering animals from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa! We
would like to take this opportunity to ask for your help in caring for the animal,
while educating you on how to care for a small pet. We can’t say for sure who
we will be fostering at that time, but we can say it will be a great experience!
Whether we have a rabbit, a guinea pig, or a surprise animal, you’re bound to
learn so much! We will discuss and practice feeding, watering, and cleaning the
animal, as well as toys and socialization for the pet. What fun!

available around the house. If you’ve ever seen the gameshow on TV you know
what to expect and how thrilling it can get! And if you haven’t, then don’t miss this
chance to learn some entertaining new games to play with your family and friends
at home!

ATHLETICS
Anyone interested in competing in ANY Special Olympic events must
complete an “Iowa Special Olympics Physical & Release Form” prior to
participation. Please check with the Leisure Department to verify your forms
are current and on file. Physicals must be updated every three years.

S.O. Basketball UPDATE
Here are some important updates for those who registered by November 20th to
participate in our Special Olympics Basketball program!
Please note that NO new registrations will be processed after November 20th for
this basketball season!

7:00-8:00 pm ALL 3 on 3 Teams

The Skills District Competition will be January 31st, 2015, at Woodward Granger
Middle School in Woodward. District Competition for teams will be announced.
Those who receive a blue ribbon will continue to practice through March 10th.
The Mid-Winter Tournament will be held in Iowa City on March 14th, 2015.
S.O. Bocce
**Please note changes in start dates, location, and other details**
Bocce ball is an ancient game that is gaining popularity. Modern day Bocce ball
resembles bowling in that you roll a ball towards a target. The goal is to get the

ball closest to the target. We will start each practice with a warm up and then
focus on teaching skills for playing Bocce.
As the season progresses, teams will have the chance to play against each other.
Special Olympics Bocce is a team sport consisting of 4 players on a team with
a possibility of 4 alternates per team. All teams will compete at a new-this-year
regionals qualifying tournament – details to be announced.
Those participating in Bocce will not be able to participate in Soccer.
Keep in mind the last day to register and turn in S.O. physicals will be
January 5th, 2015.
New Bocce participants must attend the first practice on January 5th from 5:30-6:30 pm for
mandatory assessments. All other participants should attend this practice as well.

S.O. Swimming
Swimming season is here! Athletes will have the chance to practice with Dowling
High School students as they train for the Spring Games in Indianola on April
7th. We will begin practicing for Special Olympic Swimming on Tuesday, March
10th and continue through Tuesday, March 31st at Dowling High School in West
Des Moines. Blue ribbon winners will continue to the Summer Games in May. All
participants must be able to swim, lessons are not provided.

Hey everyone, track is back! Rejoin your friends and make new ones as you
practice along side Dowling High School students. Practice will begin Tuesday,
March 10th from 6:30-7:30 pm at Dowling High School in West Des Moines.
Athletes will compete in the Spring Games in Indianola on April 7th. Blue ribbon
winners will continue to the Summer Games in May. Participants must meet Iowa
Special Olympic guidelines to compete in developmental events.

It’s Soccer Season and we’re ready to play! Join us as we learn and practice
soccer fundamentals like passing, kicking and of course scoring. Please remember
it takes 8 people to make a team so be sure that all your school mates and friends
ages 15 and under sign up and get in on all the fun!
Keep in mind the last day to register and turn in S.O. physicals will be March 23rd, 2015.
All participants will be placed on a team based on their skill level. All teams
big and small will compete at the State Summer Games in Ames on May 21st,
2015. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to practices and
competitions.
All new youth soccer participants need to attend a mandatory assessment session
on March 16th from 6:30-7:30 pm at Courage League Sports.
