2015
The No. 14 Fighting Illini women’s gymnastics team returns home for
their annual Pink Meet to face No. 9 Penn State. Action is slated for
Saturday, Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. at Huff Hall. The event is a coed meet with
the Illini men’s gymnastics team hosting Minnesota. Free Illini pink gear
will be available for the first 1,000 fans.

SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS
Penn State enters the weekend 5-1 after collecting their first Big Ten victory of the season with
a 196.550-194.450 victory over Maryland. The Nittany Lions currently rank 10th in bars (49.042),
12th in vault (49.108), 14th in floor (48.900) and 21st in beam (48.700). Freshman Briannah
Tsang has led the Nittany Lions individually, as her season average of 39.500 ranks ninth in the
nation.
#14 ILLINOIS
Despite tying the sixth-highest score in school history, the Illini fell to Penn State (196.675196.500) last season at Penn State.

The Illini currently sit 14th in the nation based on the season’s average and rank in the top-10 two
events. Illinois ranks seventh on bars (49.083) and eighth in beam (48.867). Illinois also ranks

ALL-AROUND TRIO
A trio of all-arounders have emerged in the Illini’s first three weeks of competition. Junior Giana
O’Connor is fresh off her career-best performance in the all-around (39.50) and claimed the allaround title in the season opener at Central Michigan. Making their Illini debuts in all-around this
season, sophomores Mary Jane Horth and ERin Buchanan have shown improvement from week to
week. In the second meet of the season, Horth claimed the all-around title with a career-best mar
of 39.275. Buchanan also turned in a career-best performance at Michigan (39.150).
LAST TIME OUT
The No. 14 Fighting Illini women’s gymnastics team dropped a close meet to No. 4 Michigan in Ann
Arbor Sunday afternoon, lossing 196.850-195.475. Junior Giana O’Connor led Illinois with a careerhigh 39.350, which placed her tied for third in the all-around. O’Connor shared an event title with
Sachi Sugiyama on vault (9.875). Sophomore Erin Buchanan delivered a great performance, as
she achieved a career-high all-around score (39.150). Illinois also scored a season-best 48.950
on beam.
STRONG START TO 2015
The 2015 Illini are off to a strong start that matches that of the last season, which was the best in
school history. The Orange and Blue started the season defeating No. 23 Central Michigan with a
score over 195 for just the second time ever in a season opener, a feat the Illini first accomplished
last season. In the second weekend of competition, Illinois took down Rutgers (196.175-192.775)
and reached the 196 benchmark in week two action for just the second time in program history.
Last season, the Illini also posted a score of 196.175 in their week two victory over Centenary and
Wisconsin Eau Claire.
B1G EVENT SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK
Senior Sunny Kato of the Illinois women’s gymnastics team garnered the Big Ten Event Specialist
of the Week award on Monday Jan. 19. The award marks her first Big Ten weekly accolade of her
career. Kato produced a pair of titles in Saturday’s 196.175-192.775 victory over Rutgers in the
2015 home opener. Kato excelled in her signature events, claiming the bars (9.925) and beam
(9.900) titles. Her 9.925 on bars tied her personal best, which ranks sixth on the all-time list. The
previous Illini gymnast to earn the event specialist weekly award was Amber See on March 17,
2014.
