Clarke vies with Jimenez for Ryder Cup captaincy
DUBAI: The captain of the European side that
will defend the Ryder Cup against the United States in Minnesota in 2016 will be Darren
Clarke or Miguel Angel Jimenez, two stalwarts
of the team said yesterday.
World number two Henrik Stenson and sixth-ranked
Sergio Garcia both believe it will be a straight fight
between the Northern Irishman and the Spaniard over
who replaces 2014 skipper Paul McGinley.
“Most likely we’re going to see a race between
Darren and Miguel,” Stenson told reporters yesterday
ahead of this week’s Dubai Desert Classic.
“That’s the beauty of being part of the Tournament
Players Committee that no longer votes for it. I don’t
have to put any thought into it, I just have to wait like
everybody else until the result comes out.”
The captain used to be decided by the players but it
is now down to a five-man panel that includes former
skippers McGinley, Jose Maria Olazabal and Colin
Montgomerie.
“They have got enough experience between them to
come up with a good decision,” said Swede Stenson
who has played in the biennial team event three times.
“I believe they haven’t met yet.”

star fails doping
SEOUL: South Korea’s only
Olympic swimming champion,
Park Tae-hwan, failed a recent
doping test and put his hopes of
competing at the Rio de Janeiro
Games in 2016 in doubt.
Park tested positive for an
unspecified banned substance in
early September in a test arranged
by swimming world governing
body FINA, according to his
agency Team GMP and Korea
Swimming Federation yesterday.
South Korean media reported the
substance was testosterone.
The 25-year-old Park has been
a national hero in South Korea
since he won a gold medal in the
400-meter freestyle at the 2008
Beijing Olympics. It was South
Korea’s first Olympic swimming
medal, and he also owns the
country’s only other three Olympic
swimming medals. Park added a
silver in Beijing, and two more
silvers at the 2012 London Games.
“Park Tae-hwan is more shocked
by the results of a doping test than
anyone else,” Team GMP said.
Team GMP officials blamed
the positive test on an injection
administered by a local hospital,
which offered him free chiropractic
and other treatments in July. The
doping test he failed was before
the Asian Games, which began in
late September in Incheon. There,
Park won one silver and five
bronze medals, and passed doping
tests during the event, according
to Team GMP and swimming
officials.

n Farrell and Barritt out
The five-time NBA champion will have surgery on today
and a timeline for his return
will be issued following the
procedure, the team said in a
statement.
Bryant injured his shoulder
last week in a loss to the Pelicans in New Orleans and it
could lead to the 16-time NBA
All-Star being shut down for
the Lakers’ final 37 games of
the 2014-15 regular season.
The 36-year-old guard was
averaging 22.3 points from 35
games this season for a struggling Lakers team that is last
in the Pacific Division with a
12-33 record.
Bryant had sat out eight of
the Lakers’ previous 16 games
for “rest” reasons.

Owen Farrell and centre Brad
Barritt have been ruled out
of next week’s Six Nations
Championship opener against
Wales in Cardiff, British media
reported yesterday.
Farrell and Barritt sustained
knee injuries playing for their
clubs last weekend, adding to a
growing list for England coach
Stuart Lancaster.
Flanker Tom Wood and lock
Geoff Parling are also struggling
to get fit to face the Welsh on
Feb. 6 along with centre Kyle
Eastmond.
Forwards Ben Morgan and Joe
Launchbury have been ruled out
of the entire Six Nations.
Farrell lost his place at flyhalf
to George Ford during the
November internationals and his
absence could mean a recall for
the mercurial Danny Cipriani on
the replacements’ bench.
n Flyers’ Rinaldo banned
NEW YORK: Philadelphia
Flyers forward Zac Rinaldo has
been slapped with an eightgame suspension for a check
from behind on Pittsburgh
star defenceman Kris Letang,
the National Hockey League
announced on Monday.
Rinaldo, of Canada, was given a
five-minute penalty on the play
after he charged towards and then
jumped in the air before hitting
an unsuspecting Letang who was
trying to make a play along the
side boards. Rinaldo was also
thrown out of the game.
Letang left last week’s contest and
did not return. He also sat out the
Penguins’ game on Wednesday
against Chicago.

Pacquiao may fight Khan
LAS VEGAS: Filipino boxing star Manny
Pacquiao has a plan in place if yet another bid
to fight Floyd Mayweather fails – a May 30
bout, possibly against England’s Amir Khan.
Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum told ESPN that
a backup plan if a hoped-for May 2 blockbuster against unbeaten US star Mayweather falls
through is a fight four weeks later in Las Vegas,
New York, London or Abu Dhabi.
“A lot of places around the world want to host
a Manny Pacquiao fight,” Arum said. “He’s an
international icon, and I have been approached
by a number of people looking to host a Manny
Pacquiao fight.”
Arum also told ESPN that Khan, a former welterweight champion, is the leading candidate, although Khan would also be a top contender to
fight Mayweather if Pacquiao is not his choice.
Khan and Pacquiao have also been sparring partners before in training camps run by trainer Freddie
Roach while working with both fighters. Arum also
mentioned Russian former junior welterweight
champion Ruslan Provodnikov and Argentina’s
Lucas Matthysse as possible Pacquiao foes.
