RAINBOW WAHINE (0-0)
The No. 4 Cal women’s water polo will play four top-10 teams this weekend when it travels to the
South Bay to participate in the Stanford Invitational. In addition to playing No. 13 Indiana, No. 2 UCLA
and No. 8 Hawaii in bracket play, the Bears potentially could play No. 1 Stanford in the championship
match on Sunday.
BEAR NECESSITIES: CAL'S TOP STORYLINES, STREAKS & TRENDS
SIX MATCHES OF DOMINANCE
CORSO CLOSES IN ON 200 WINS
The Bears enter the weekend having played six
matches on the season and they have completely
dominated their competiton. Cal is outscoring its
opponents 112-26, resulting in an average margin of
victory of 18.4. The Bears have reached the 20-goal
mark three times in a game.
Cal head coach Richard Corso enters the
weekend with a career record of 192-79, putting
him just eight victories short of the 200-win mark
for his career. Corso, who is in his 10th year in
Berkeley, was the head coach of the 1996 U.S.
Olympic Men’s Water Polo Team. He’s led the
Bears to the NCAA Championships in three of the
past five seasons, including the championship
match in 2011.
ALL-AMERICAN TRIO
It’s no surprise that the bulk of Cal’s scoring so far
has come from three sophomores that each earned
All-American honors last season. Dora Antal, who
was a First Team All-American in 2014 and the
MPSF Newcomer of the Year, leads the way with 23
goals. Anna Illes, meanwhile, is second on the team
with 16 goals after earning All-American honorable
mention in 2014. Fellow 2014 All-American
honorable mention pick Roser Tarrago has netted
12 goals so far. Last season, the All-American trio
combined for 172 goals and 49.7 percent of the
team’s scoring.
MADDY MAKES HER MARK
Just six matches into her sophomore season,
goalkeeper Madeline Trabucco is already making
a dent in the Cal record books. Trabucco earned
the starting job to begin her freshman season and
already has 207 saves in her career, which puts her
in sixth place on Cal’s all-time list. Trabucco has 28
saves so far this season.
VIC’S VIEW
Senior Victoria Williams takes readers inside
Cal’s program this season with her weekly
blog, “Vic’s View” on CalBears.com. Each week,
Williams will report on all things Bears taking
place in and out of Spieker Pool.
ABOUT THE STANFORD INVITATIONAL
Annually one of the most competitive
tournaments in the nation, this year’s edition of
the Stanford Invitational features eight teams, all
ranked in this week’s CWPA Top-20. Cal is joined
in its bracket by No. 2 UCLA, No. 8 Hawaii and
No. 13 Indiana. In the other bracket of the field,
it’s No. 1 Stanford, No. 6 UC Irvine, No. 7 San
Jose State and No. 18 UC Davis. The Bears are
guaranteed to play a ranked oppoent in all four
matches they play this weekend.
